WALK FOR A WORLD Thank you for giving hope to millions of husbands, wives, families and friends. Thank you for believing that together we can make a difference so big, that one day, no one will have to face this unjust condition. Thank you for every step you take and every pound you raise. Here s to your family, friends and a world without dementia. Patrick and Marion Deane, on their wedding day. Marion was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s 10 years ago. They represent thousands of husbands and wives in the UK living with dementia. 2 3

DIG YOUR TRAINERS OUT, SPREAD THE WORD AND GET FUNDRAISING! In this guide you ll find lots of simple and fun ideas to get you started. You ll see tips on how to set up your own JustGiving page, spread the word on Facebook, make the most of your donations, and lots more. EVERY THREE MINUTES ANOTHER LOVED ONE IN THE UK DEVELOPS That means around 225,000 people develop dementia every year. Which is why we need thousands of people like you to walk with us this Autumn because arm in arm, step by step and pound by pound, we will achieve a world without dementia. 50 could fund 50 minutes of work using a specialised microscope, analysing changes in brain tissue. 4 5

WALK FOR WENDY WALK FOR MY DAUGHTERS For my girls who will miss me long before I am gone For the times when they will long to hear my laugh again For my fear that it will happen to them too For a world without dementia My name is Wendy, and I was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s on 31st July 2014. I may not have much of a short-term memory, but that date is one I ll never forget. I am a research volunteer as part of the Join Dementia Research network. Thank you so much for signing up for this year s Memory Walk! By doing so you ll be allowing Alzheimer s Society to continue to help the 850,000 people like me living with dementia in the UK. I m passionate about taking part in research because it enables me to give hope to my children. Research really needs funding, so you should be really proud of yourself for joining a Memory Walk. It will contribute to funding research into the cure, care and prevention of dementia. By taking part in the Memory Walk, and fundraising for it, you re making a huge difference to our lives and for that I send you a BIG hug and eternal thanks. I m sure you ll have a wonderful day! 6 7

This section tells people why you re fundraising at a glance. So we suggest something really simple like this: I m walking for a world without dementia, for my granny / children / friend. Set yourself a target, to encourage people to give as much as they can. We recommend a target of 100 but feel free to raise more! FUNDRAISING IDEAS SET UP YOUR JUSTGIVING PAGE The easiest way to raise money is to create a JustGiving fundraising page online. That means your friends and family can sponsor you quickly and easily, you can keep track of donations, and the money you raise will be sent to us automatically. Good to know: When you set up your page, you ll be given a unique JustTextGiving code. This handy code enables people to quickly sponsor you via text message. It s zero faff. So make sure you know your JustTextGiving code when you re chatting to everyone about taking part in a Memory Walk. Every pound will help. Robyn s Alzheimer s Society Memory Walk 2015 I m walking for a world without dementia, for my mum. Thank you for sponsoring me to take part in this year s Memory Walk. I m walking for a world without dementia and for my lovely mum, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer s 10 years ago. At the moment 225,000 people develop dementia every year that s the equivalent of a loved one being diagnosed every three minutes. I want to help change that statistic, and I hope that one day dementia will be a thing of the past. Every pound you donate will bring us closer to a world without dementia. You are making a huge difference. Thank you. 150% 150.00 raised of 100 target Follow the tips on the right to set up your page at justgiving.com Pop in some photos to help bring your story to life. Tell everyone why you re taking part whether it s to celebrate a loved one, or simply because you want to help achieve a world without dementia. Tell them around 225,000 people develop dementia every year that s the equivalent of a loved one being developed every three minutes. Here is where you ll see all the donations you ve inspired pouring in. 8 9

HAVE FUN FOR A WORLD There are lots of great ways to fundraise individually or as a team, whether it s at work, with friends and family, or in your local community. Here are some ideas for how you can increase your sponsorship total. IF YOU VE JUST GOT A BIT OF TIME, YOU COULD IF YOU VE GOT LOTS OF TIME, WHY NOT Raise money at work or school Dance, knit, paint or make birthday cards Dress down (or up!) days, or a simple collection are brilliant ways to spread the word and raise more money. Many companies offer matched giving programmes and will double the amount you raise, so it s definitely worth asking. If you ve got a passion, now s the time to let it show! Often the easiest way to fundraise is to do something you already enjoy. Love to dance? Try a danceathon. Good at art? Make some greetings cards. Or how about knitting simple bookmarks for donations? Give something up Come dine with me Love chocolate? Can t stop taking the lift? Why not give up something for a week, or even a month, and asking others for their support? It s a great way to boost your donations. You could host a cheese night. Try a 70s-style dinner party. Or invite friends to a slap-up buffet. Ask everyone for a donation in return. It s a delicious and sociable way to raise extra money. And then there s always 10 11

BAKE FOR A WORLD Who doesn t love a good bake sale? They re an easy, effective (and tasty) way to boost your total. Host one at work and get your colleagues to bake too. Or get your neighbours involved. Just a few hours work can make a huge difference. You don t need to be a star baker or cookery whizz. This simple chocolate brownie recipe only takes 30 minutes. Makes 20. When you sell them for 2 each, you ll raise 40. INGREDIENTS 400g caster sugar 225g butter, melted 60g cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 eggs 225g plain flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 60g walnut halves (optional) 25 could pay for genetic tests on four people in a clinical trial. This can let us look for specific genes within their DNA. Method 1. Mix all ingredients in the order given. 2. B ake at 180 C/Gas mark 4 for 20 25 minutes in a rectangular 23 x 33cm greased baking tin. 3. Cool, and slice into equal square portions. For more great fundraising ideas, visit our website memorywalk.org.uk/fundraise Doing something amazing? Share your idea on our Facebook page 12 13

On Facebook and Twitter Let everyone on there know that you are walking for a world without dementia make sure you use #MemoryWalk Share the link to your JustGiving page so that everyone you know can support you. Remember to keep plugging it, and let people know what else you re doing to raise money. SHARE YOUR STORY FOR A WORLD Sharing your story is one of the best ways to inspire others. Dementia is one of the biggest challenges of our generation, so we need everyone to join us in taking action for a world without dementia. Telling everyone why you re doing a Memory Walk will help spur on donations and encourage others to join in. I M WALKING Update your profile using our special Memory Walk profile picture. It s ready to download at our website. On email Email your friends and colleagues asking for support and let them know why it s so important. Tell them that every three minutes someone develops dementia. We need their donations now to help us achieve a world without dementia. Remember to include the link to your JustGiving fundraising page. Add our Memory Walk banner to your email signature at home or at work - download it here 14 15

OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE 3.2 MILLION THIS YEAR Every pound you raise will help fund local services to support families affected by dementia, and vital research, bringing us closer to a world without dementia. RESEARCH FOR A WORLD Funding from Alzheimer s Society gives me the opportunity to make a difference to those with dementia. Nicola Voyle 550 could fund a research nurse to be involved in a study at the forefront of clinical science for three days. Nicola is just one of the many promising researchers we are funding to help bring about a world without dementia. She is completing her PhD at King s College, London and is looking into finding a way to spot dementia early. She says: The funding I receive from Alzheimer s Society is vital to my research. I am searching for a marker of Alzheimer s disease in the blood which could lead to earlier diagnosis of patients and be used to create more efficient clinical trials. Nicola will be taking part in a Memory Walk in Bedford 50 100 250 650 1000 This will help for a PhD researcher to continue research into the causes of dementia, how it can be treated and, ultimately, to find a cure. We d like everyone to try and raise at least 100. This would allow a person with dementia to enjoy ten Singing for the Brain sessions to boost their confidence. Could pay for antibodies that are vital for analysing proteins in brain tissue to measure changes. Could pay for a comprehensive brain scan to help improve diagnosis of different types of dementia. Would be a huge help. It could fund a PhD researcher for seven days to continue vital research into understanding the causes of dementia, how it can be treated and to find a cure.
