FRED S PLACE COMMUNITY SLEEPOUT Everybody deserves a home
The sense of community at Fred s Place is amazing. I can t really describe what it s like to have a place where I can drop in, enjoy a warm meal and have a really good chat with someone who cares.
FRED S PLACE Fred s Place is an intervention and prevention support service that assists people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in the Tweed region. A modern and safe space, Fred s Place offers support services that aim to rebuild lives, improve health and wellbeing, reduce social isolation and work towards inclusion and involvement in community activities. For many, Fred s Place provides a home environment to feel safe and to be connected to other crucial support services to help marginalised people on their journey towards health and independence. Each day, over 70 people, including families with young children, access the services and facilities at Fred s Place. Fred s Place was established by the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW Lismore Central Council in 2013 and is funded solely by the Society. It receives no ongoing Government funding.
HOW WE HELP Fred s Place operates Monday to Friday and includes access to a modified house with three bathrooms, shower facilities, a large laundry, a computer room with internet and telephone facilities, a television, dining and recreational spaces, a volunteer staffed kitchen, storage facilities, and mailing facilities. Free breakfasts and lunches are provided daily. Tea, coffee and snacks are also provided throughout the day, and food packs and toiletries are available for people to take away with them. Fred s Place also provides a dedicated and equipped room for Centrelink, Medicare, Legal Aid, counselling and housing support and assistance, all of which are available on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Case management and outreach support is also offered along with assistance to find emergency accommodation. All services are provided at no cost. Fred s Place has had an enormously positive effect on the Tweed Heads community and the people it assists. In 2014/15, Fred s Place: assisted over 1500 people in need; housed 149 people; helped 55 people relocate back to family and friends; provided temporary accommodation to 121 people; and referred over 1250 people to other crucial services. The team at Fred s Place made me feel welcome from the moment I stepped inside. I was offered a cup of tea and a toasted sandwich, I had a hot shower and I was able to wash my clothes. Just simple things like this that so many people take for granted make such a difference.
FRED S PLACE COMMUNITY SLEEPOUT The Fred s Place Community Sleepout provides the local community with the opportunity to experience for just one night how people facing homelessness live every day. Mark your calendar! Thursday, 28 July at the Twin Towns Masonic Centre in Tweed Heads. Tweed Heads has one of the highest homeless rates per capita of any city or town in New South Wales, yet there is no other homelessness support service like Fred s Place in the Tweed region. Through the Fred s Place Community Sleepout, our aim is to raise awareness of homelessness as well as raise much-needed funds to assist people experiencing homelessness in the Tweed area. We are expecting over 50 participants at the event, many of whom are prominent individuals and businesses from the Tweed region with a strong social conscience and a keen interest in supporting Fred s Place. The Fred s Place Community Sleepout is being held at the Twin Towns Masonic Centre on Thursday, 28 July. This special night will feature an auction and raffle with fantastic prizes, special guest speakers including a first-hand experience of what it s like to be homeless, a Q&A panel, and tours of Fred s Place. Visit www.fredsplacecommunitysleepout.org.au for further information about the event.
