Thank you for supporting National Diabetes Week! Each year during National Diabetes Week, Diabetes Queensland as part of Diabetes Australia aims to increase the awareness of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This year we are encouraging people to recognise the symptoms and assess their risk of type 2 diabetes through our online risk assessment tool. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas doesn t make enough insulin or the insulin it does make does not work properly. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. It is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, we don t know what causes it but, with your help, we can try to halt the progression of type 2 diabetes. Nationally, 280 Australians are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every day with just over 1 million Australians already living with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes costs the Australian hospital system $14 billion annually with type 2 diabetes set to become the leading cause of disease burden by 2023 (AIHW, 2010). In Queensland, there are approximately 93,000 people already have type 2 diabetes who don t even know it. By checking their risk through our quick and easy risk assessment tool, we are encouraging Queenslanders and all Australians to take control of their health and take steps to live well and prevent diabetes.
