Testing is the only way to know for sure if a man, woman or child is HIV positive or not." " Testing requires only a simple blood sample." " While today available treatments allow us to enhance hope and quality of life for those who are ill, they do not provide a cure." When an HIV positive woman decides to have a child, a doctor can provide information on existing treatments that reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to the child. But be careful: even when someone is under treatment, the basic precautions we have learned must be followed, because an HIV positive person can still pass on the virus to another man, woman or child. It is impossible to catch HIV by touching an infected person. Protection is assured by washing objects and hands touched by blood in hot soapy water. So, it is possible to live with the virus and continue to lead a perfectly normal professional and social life. It is important to respect HIV positive people, to listen and to offer emotional support. Pre and Post Test Quiz answers September 11,2008 2
