Matters Arising CNS support Lynda Taylor reported that the inclusion of a standard about access to CNS support in the generic QPIs was still under discussion at national level. Stereotatic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) Felicity Little advised that progress in implementing SABR had been slower than anticipated, due to physics and other staff shortfalls, but hoped this would be resolved so the service could commence by the end of the year or beginning of next year. Boards will be advised in advance of this service commencing. Mesothelioma tissue bank Colin Selby reported that Robert Rintoul was co-ordinating the establishment of a national mesothelioma tissue bank and had contacted William Wallace to discuss the retrospective acquisition of surgical samples. Dr Wallace said that, given the workload involved for Pathologists and Oncologists, the process should be trialled with a limited number of cases. Colin Selby said that a second phase of the project, involving prospective tissue collection, would require ethics approval, discussions with Principal Investigators, etc. 2 SCAN Issues Kate Macdonald and Sandra Bagnall updated the Group on regional and national developments, including: Planning for the reprovision of the Edinburgh Cancer Centre. National and regional work on radiotherapy capacity and workforce planning. Transforming Care After Treatment The regional TCAT Group will meet on 30 th Sept to decide which SCAN project proposals should be submitted in Phase 1. The national TCAT group will make a decision about which projects will be funded by the end of November. Macmillan anticipate that 10 projects across Scotland will be funded in Phase 1. Sandra Bagnall said that she was the regional lead for TCAT and encouraged Group members to contact her if they had any queries about submitting proposals for future phases of the programme. Successful tests of new models of acute oncology in NHS Borders and NHS Fife. 24-hour Chemotherapy Treatment Helpline the service was launched as a pilot in Lothian on 10 th June to give patients at risk of developing side effects from their cancer treatment 24/7 access to advice. Chemotherapy CEL Self assessments have to be completed by the end of September and a report will be circulated to the SCAN Groups in due course. Launch of Tailored Information for the People of Scotland (TIPS) - http://www.nhsinform.co.uk/cancer/tips. 3 Lung Cancer Issues New Metastatic Disease Diagnosed on 18-FDG PET/CT Should it have been identified on previous staging imaging? Alan Simms gave a presentation on a pilot study which had reviewed the cases of Lothian patients (80% of whom were lung cancer patients) where PET/CT had revealed distant metastatic disease in patients which had not previously been noted. The study found that over 40% of the new metastatic disease found on PET/CT was visible on the staging scan and that this was frequently bony metastases. He said that he had plans to collaborate with Glasgow to conduct a larger-scale study with the aim of providing information which would help Radiologists in reporting on staging scans. Page 2 of 5

SCAN Website Sandra Bagnall said that, in discussion with the SCAN Group Chairs, each tumour group had been allocated a review month, in order to make the process of reviewing content on the SCAN website as easy as possible. She advised that the Lung Group s allocated month was February and that, in moving to the new system, she would like to make sure that the content on the site was up-to-date and that reviewers and review dates were agreed for all documents. Colin Selby observed that new national guidance on nebulisers was expected in the near future which would have an impact on information for both clinicians and patients. Diana Borthwick suggested that information about oxygen would be helpful. Gillian Whitson offered to assist with information about nebulisers, oxygen and surgery. Lynda Taylor said that she would also be happy to assist with information on oxygen. Sandra said that she would monitor the information available on TIPS to avoid duplication. Sandra reported that she had had a meeting with Diana Borthwick, Janet Ironside and Jane Stewart (who manages OOQS - the Oncology Online Quality System) and had agreed a process to ensure that patient information leaflets on OOQS, as well as on the SCAN website, are reviewed and updated as required. It was agreed that Diana Borthwick should assist Sandra Bagnall in filling gaps in the list of reviewers and all Group members were encouraged to review the content in the lung cancer sections of the website and advise at the next meeting about any gaps needing to be filled. Actions: Diana Borthwick to assist Sandra Bagnall in filling gaps in the list of reviewers. Group members to review the content in the lung cancer sections of the website and advise at the November meeting about any gaps needing to be filled. Diana Borthwick Sandra Bagnall ALL Information for patients: www.scan.scot.nhs.uk/cancerinformation/lung/pages/default.aspx Information for health professionals: www.scan.scot.nhs.uk/healthprofessionals/tumourtype/lung/pages /default.aspx Detect Cancer Early Colin Selby reported that the lung cancer media campaign, provisionally scheduled for November 2013, would feature a high-profile individual and that primary care awareness events were being held around the country. Kris Skwarski noted that the campaigns were likely to generate extra work for both primary and secondary care and said there were signs that the Scottish Government was listening to clinicians concerns about the timing of the media campaign and might defer this until 2014. It was agreed that Detect Cancer Early should be kept on the Lung Group agenda. Page 3 of 5

Audit NLCA 2012 data has been submitted to NLCA. Comparative report for 2012 Work has started on the comparative analysis for the 2012 cohort and a clinical sign-off meeting will be arranged. Kris Skwarski offered to review the Lothian data. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy data Following the discussions at the previous meeting, a contact for radiotherapy data queries had been circulated to audit staff, as an interim measure. The Group discussed the difficulties experienced by audit staff, for all tumour groups, in obtaining start and end dates for radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments. It was noted that, in time, ChemoCare reports should assist in obtaining information about chemotherapy and Diana Borthwick advised the Group that a proposal to develop end of treatment summaries had been submitted for Transforming Care After Treatment (TCAT) funding. It was agreed that Felicity Little and Diana Borthwick should ask colleagues, at the next Oncology team meeting, to make sure start/end dates for treatments are included in discharge letters, which would then be stored on Lothian s TRAK system and should also be copied to referring clinicians. Kate Macdonald said that a request had been sent to ehealth colleagues to ask if SCAN Audit staff can have access to TRAK via the Lothian Secure Desktop. TRAK MDM module It was noted that a TRAK MDM module is being developed for lung cancer which will capture QPI data. It was agreed that it would be helpful to have a demonstration of this at the next meeting. Action: Kate Macdonald to arrange a demonstration of the TRAK MDM module for the November meeting. Kate Macdonald Workforce It was noted that: interviews for a second CNS for the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) are due to be held in October 2013 single-handed working is an issue in Dumfries & Galloway, but difficult to resolve due to small patient numbers an e-tool has been developed in England to calculate optimal CNS numbers a second Lung Cancer Physician will take up post at the RIE in November 2013 4 For Information Review of QPI datasets and data definitions ISD are looking for volunteers to review the datasets and data definitions for lung cancer. This will involve review documentation and attending a one-off meeting in the central belt. Group members were reminded to let Sheena Mackenzie know if they would be willing to assist. Action: Group members to let Sheena Mackenzie know ASAP if ALL Page 4 of 5

they would be willing to assist with the review of QPI datasets and data definitions. 5 Any Other Business Meeting venue - It was agreed that Sheena Mackenzie should explore the possibility of booking the Western General Hospital Telepresence Suite for future meetings. Action: Sheena Mackenzie to explore the possibility of booking the Western General Hospital Telepresence Suite for future meetings.
