What is evidence? Numbers and Stories Joanna Goodrich The Point of Care Foundation www.pointofcarefoundation.org.uk January 2015

Barriers or excuses? to collecting data Quantitative evidence Perception that data are flawed It s not relevant It s out of date Qualitative data Misunderstanding the numbers are too small that s just one person s story

Quantitative evidence 1 Allows you to make comparisons 2 Allows you to generalise 3 Allows you to see changes over time 4 Allows you to ask how typical is this? Numbers need to be robustly defined and collected Real time feedback Identify a small number of measures

Qualitative evidence 1 Stories give insight behind the numbers 2 Allows you to unpick what is happening 3 Allows you to understand the relationship between things that are going on 4 Helps you to understand the meaning for patients One story is enough (Robert Francis)

Transforming patient experience: The power of narrative, case history and numbers Conference November 2013 Quantitative and qualitative data both have their place and neither are fact or anecdote Data are shaped by the perspective of the reporter, the audience and the context, and are part of the narrative www.pointofcarefoundation.org.uk

transactional Patients experiences are a mix of the what and the how Transactional and relational dimensions of care High Low relational High Goodrich and Cornwell Seeing the person in the patient (2008)

What matters to patients? ASK patients INVOLVE patients Their experience is evidence Patients are a critical part of the interdisciplinary team Their evidence provides insight that otherwise would be missed FEED BACK to patients what has been done with the data they provided Think about ethics

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES AND BARRIERS? Variability of existing research evidence base Traditional direct interventions versus indirect, education, consultative, preventative, public health roles Uni-professional versus multi-professional and cross-agency contexts Inequity of substantive research funding investment Capacities, competences and confidence of practitioners and services Awareness of the research environment, processes, research quality Access to research evidence Skills in critical engagement and implementation/translation into practice Mentorship for practice-based research Recognition for well designed service evaluation approaches Timescale for research agendas and processes Limited support and recognition for innovation in service delivery

WHERE ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES? Operational-level opportunities, research skills mentorship models CAHPR regional Hub initiatives for peer support communities Collaborative academic-practitioner partnerships Building research capacity in teams and capability in individuals Dedicated support for research leadership & business case models Priority focus on how services are experienced by both users & providers Strategic level co-ordinated approaches Collective representation of the research quality and impact Prioritisation and promotion of the service user voice Exploitation of social media to promote visibility & engagement
