MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING Introduction to Motivational Interviewing (offered in English and Spanish) 2-day Course (12-14 credit hours) This course is designed to introduce clinicians and staff members from diverse professional backgrounds to the foundational concepts and skills of motivational interviewing (MI), including the underlying Spirit of MI, Four Processes, and Core Skills. Participants will have a number of opportunities for skill development through the use of role plays, individual practice, and interactive group exercises. Videos and live demonstrations will enhance the learning process. Advanced Motivational Interviewing 1 or 2-day Course (6-14 credit hours) Participants will focus on deepening the central skills of using MI to support behavior change, with an emphasis on practicing strategies to evoke and reinforce Change Talk. Video, live demonstration, and interactive group exercises provide ample opportunity for continued skill development. This course is intended for professionals who have completed an introductory level of MI training. Enhancing Motivation in Group Counseling 2-day Course (14 credit hours) This course assumes a basic understanding of group counseling processes and is designed to facilitate improvement in client readiness to change. It is practice-oriented and focused on interventions that address change and improve group process. Participants have opportunity to identify difficult situations for practice during the course. Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) Coding 2 or 3-day Course (14-21 credit hours) The 2-day workshop introduces participants to the newly revised MITI coding method, based on the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) 4.2.1 Manual. Participants will learn about modifications made to both the global ratings and behavior counts from the previous version. Ample opportunities to practice coding are offered in addition to discussions about treatment fidelity issues, maintenance of inter-rater reliability, and supervising coding labs. The third day of the workshop focuses on providing coaching and feedback to MI learners and trainees using the MITI 4.2.1 methods. Page 1 of 9
Motivational Interviewing: Customized Courses 1 day Course (1-6 credit hours) The NWATTC can create customized training experiences based on an organization s needs. Workshops lasting 3 or more hours may be eligible for credit hours. Previous special topics have focused on using MI (a) with Native American populations, (b) in Supervision, (c) with young people, and (d) in treatment planning. Other sessions have featured in-depth discussions and skillbuilding activities to develop participants abilities to (a) understand and deepen reflections, (b) evoke Change Talk, and (c) learn and practice strategies to recognize and decrease Discord. TREATMENT PLANNING & ASSESSMENT Developing Effective Treatment Plans ( Treatment Planning MATRS ) Designed to help counselors develop treatment plans that are individualized, strength-based, and oriented toward specific client needs. Course is focused on using assessment information effectively in treatment planning and ongoing case management. Participants will be provided a scenario from which they will work to create individualized treatment plans based on the principles of MATRS (Measurable, Attainable, Time-limited, Realistic and Specific). The importance of language and understanding the change process will be emphasized and information about documentation provided. American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria 1-day course (6 credit hours) This training will explore revisions and updates to ASAM Criteria as it relates to assessment, service planning, treatment, discharge planning, as well as referral for continued services. The training will provide updates on new information regarding terminology, guiding principles, care descriptions and continued services once a patient is transferred or discharged. This training will also discuss the role adversity plays in patients continued substance -related behaviors as a way of coping with interpersonal distress. Participants will have an opportunity to practice ASAM Criteria through clinical application. Page 2 of 9
CLINICAL SUPERVISION Clinical Supervision I: Developing Counselors Skills 2-day Course (15 credit hours) Drawing from SAMHSA s TIP 52, this course is designed to increase understanding and skill in assessing counselors in substance use treatment settings and building learning plans to guide their continued professional growth and development. It emphasizes the importance of structure and the collaborative teaching and mentoring aspects of clinical supervision. The basis for evaluation are SAMHSA s TAP 21 Addiction Counseling Competencies and Performance Assessment Rubrics for the Addiction Counseling Competencies. The content is generalizable to mental health and other settings. Experiential activities will enhance understanding of (a) culture in supervision, (b) methods of observation, (c) performance evaluation, (d) negotiation of learning plans, and (e) structuring of supervisory interviews. Clinical Supervision II: Managing Supervisory Dilemmas 2-day Course (15 credit hours) Clinical Supervision I is a prerequisite. This course builds upon the foundation of structure and methods utilized in the model described in SAMHSA s TIP 52. Complex topics addressed include (a) conducting a corrective interview; (b) practicing a model of ethical decision-making with real life scenarios; (c) facilitating a Motivational Interviewing model of Case Consultation; and (d) gaining a deeper understanding of cultural influences on the supervisory relationship using Hays ADDRESSING Framework. Other content sources include SAMHSA s TAP 21A: Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment Clinical Supervisors and The Change Book: A Blueprint for Technology Transfer published by the ATTC. Behavioral health professionals will find this training applicable in many clinical settings. Technology-Based Supervision: Extending the Reach of Clinical Supervisors 1-Day Course (6 credit hours) Although clinical supervision has been shown to decrease staff turnover, improve morale, and lead to better client outcomes, scheduling sessions can be challenging, especially in frontier/rural areas. To address some of the barriers to conducting supervision, this training examines how technology can be used to review and provide feedback on counselors skills, thereby enhancing the clinical skills of the behavioral health workforce. Designed for individuals with experience working as Clinical Supervisors in the substance use disorders treatment field, the goal of this training is to Page 3 of 9
familiarize participants with technology-based clinical supervision research, demonstrate its utility in frontier/rural clinical settings, and provide opportunities to observe and practice delivery of clinical supervision services using different types of technology. PRIMARY CARE APPROACHES Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) 1-day course (4-6 credit hours) The SBIRT Basic Workshop introduces participants to the key components of SBIRT, the rationale for and background of SBIRT, and supporting research. Standardized screening instruments and the methodology for incorporating them into a clinical practice will also be introduced. The four key steps of providing the Brief Negotiated Interview will be reviewed and participants will have an opportunity to role-play and practice delivering a brief intervention. Introduction to Care Coordination 1-day course (6 credit hours) The Care Coordination (CC) training introduces participants to research, concepts, and models of practice. It also teaches how Care Coordinators partner with youth, families, and community providers to strengthen linkages that lead to improved health outcomes. The training covers key features of CC, which are: Motivational Interviewing, client-driven service plans, care conferences, and Recovery Oriented Systems of Care. The training exposes participants to a framework for High Performing Care Coordinators; CC Competencies; the task of Care Coordinators; and examines an active CC program. Brief Treatment in Primary Care 1-day course (6 credit hours) The Brief Treatment Workshop provides primary care behavioral health clinicians a refresher on key treatment strategies for addressing substance use in a primary care setting, over the course of 4-8 treatment sessions. Topics include Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Care. Page 4 of 9
SPECIAL TOPICS Clinical Skills in the Era of Legal Cannabis 1-Day Course (6 credit hours) The trend toward legalization of medical and retail cannabis presents behavioral health clinicians with unique challenges. This course summarizes current research literature related to the effects of cannabis on the mental and physical health of adolescents and adults. Evidence-based strategies and specific handouts to engage clients in productive discussions about their cannabis use will be practiced and shared in addition to multimedia resources for further study. Treatment of Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders 1-day Course (7 credit hours) Participants will be introduced to terminology, assessment and treatment strategies and models related to co-occurring treatment. The training will provide foundational knowledge on evidencebased practices in the field of behavioral health including differential diagnosis of individuals that have a substance use and mental health co-morbidity. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Behavioral Health Providers This course describes the foundation of CBT as related to the treatment of substance use and cooccurring disorders. Strategies to teach individuals about the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors will be presented. Participants will learn the process for effective facilitation of a functional analysis of substance-using behavior along with other skillbuilding modules. Excerpts from SAMHSA materials that may be used directly with clients are distributed. Cultural Elements in Treating Hispanic and Latino Populations 2-day Course (12 credit hours) This training is designed for addiction providers and other professionals who want to increase their awareness of culturally sensitive skills for working with Latino clients. The goal of this 2-day, 12- hour course is to increase service providers cultural understanding and develop personal and professional clinical skills in working effectively with Latino clients on issues relating to the treatment of substance use disorders. Introduction to Group Counseling and Facilitation Skills 2-day course (12 credit hours) This workshop is designed to introduce participants to knowledge and skills essential to the effective facilitation of counseling and education groups in behavioral health, corrections and primary care settings. Participants will learn a framework for facilitating groups, practice key skills, and have opportunities to work on difficult group leadership situations. By the end of the workshop, participants will have: An improved understanding of the group facilitator s role, Gained new leadership insights and facilitation skills, and Clear ideas for how to improve their group work. Recovery Support Technologies This curriculum will focus on how the reach of recovery support services can be extended through the use of technologies (e.g., the web, smart phone, and cell phone) which is especially important for those individuals that reside in rural or remote areas as they may have to wait to enter treatment services thus exacerbating their behavioral health conditions. This training will provide an introduction to research-based recovery support technologies and showcase several technologyassisted interventions that can be used to help deliver recovery support services and to complement behavioral health treatment services as disease management programs. The Encompass Model of Integrated Treatment: Individual Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Young People with Co-Occurring Disorders 2-day Course (12 credit hours) Designed for behavioral health providers, this course describes the Encompass model of integrated treatment, which features individual Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Contingency Management (CM). The research base supporting Encompass, and the menu of available implementation options, are reviewed. The Encompass model is applicable to outpatient and school-based settings, and it can be used to treat substance disorders alone, or in combination with, co-occurring mental health disorders. Participants will learn and practice facilitating engagement and skillbuilding modules using the Encompass Participant Workbook through live demonstration, video, and small group activities. Tools used to monitor fidelity and measure outcomes are presented. Page 6 of 9
MEDICATION-ASSISTED TREATMENT Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction 1-6 hour Course (1-6 credit hours) In this workshop, participants will get an overview of the recent epidemiology of opioid (pharmaceutical and heroin) abuse and addiction as well as a quick review of the signs and symptoms of the acute and chronic use of opioids and withdrawal symptomatology. The bulk of the presentation will focus on the details of use of and patient response to the various FDA approved medications for the treatment of opioid addiction buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Buprenorphine Treatment: Education for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals 4-6 hour Course (4-6 credit hours) This course aims to increase understanding of the role of Buprenorphine in medication-assisted treatment of opioid dependence. Content is focused on treatment strategies and philosophy, the role of Buprenorphine in recovery, and the value of coordinated client care. The course may also be tailored with a focus on Buprenorphine Treatment for Young Adults. Medication Assisted Treatment of Addiction 3-6 hour Course (3-6 credit hours) In this workshop participants will receive detailed information about the use of FDA approved medications for the treatment of alcohol, opioid and nicotine addiction. Participants will also learn about the varieties of patient responses to these medications and the barriers to their use in the treatment of addiction. ETHICS Ethical Considerations for the Behavioral Health Professional This course addresses the needs of the behavioral health provider. Using presentation, small group work, role play, and a decision-making matrix, many areas will be addressed: Defining the role and functions of the behavioral health provider; standards; issues of vulnerability; ethical decisionmaking; performance enhancement; and legal issues. New Ethical Dilemmas Facing Counselors and Clinical Supervisors This training will review the current literature regarding new ethical dilemmas related to technology and the Internet, and provide guidance and recommendations for both counselors and clinical supervisors. Case scenarios will be used to highlight these dilemmas and encourage discussions among training participants related to: 1) the use of social networking websites by clinical supervisors, counselors, and clients; 2) emailing clients; 3) conducting internet searches on clients and/or supervisees; and 4) conducting client consultations online. TELEHEALTH Telehealth for Treatment Providers ½ Day Course (3-4 credit hours) This introductory training will provide counselors with foundational knowledge on telehealth technologies. Specifically, participants will learn about telehealth trends, treatment outcome rates, reimbursement, privacy/security issues, ethics, building therapeutic alliances, and license portability. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to practice resolving ethical dilemmas that are typical to using telehealth technologies and view and/or participate in a mock videocounseling session Telehealth for Administrators: A Capacity Assessment Tool ½ Day Course (3-4 credit hours) The most significant issue facing individuals with substance use disorders in frontier/rural areas is access to treatment and recovery services; the use of telehealth technology is a critical strategy for overcoming this access barrier. This training will introduce administrators to telehealth including: trends, outcomes, reimbursement, costs, technologies, and an agency focused Telehealth Capacity Assessment Tool (TCAT).
