4 HOW FUNDRAISING FOR ONE LOVE WORKS The community fundraising program at One Love is member-driven which means it is up to you to actively fundraise, plan, promote and host your event. As a One Love fundraiser, you have access to a wealth of tools and resources to make fundraising, planning and hosting as simple and stress-free as possible. Here is a snapshot of some of the things we can offer versus what you are responsible for as a member. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY ATTENDANCE: One Love is not responsible for fulfilling attendance at your event, so it is up to you to conduct media outreach, send out invitations and secure RSVPs. We cannot share our contact lists with anyone or send out invites on your behalf. COSTS (expenses, sponsorships, etc.): While we are not responsible for any expenses you may incur while you plan your event, there are ways you can raise funds to cover costs. This can be done by securing sponsorships and/or in-kind donations from local businesses. You are responsible for securing such sponsorships, but we can provide you with tools to put together a compelling proposal. MULTIPLE BENEFICIARIES: If your event is set up to benefit more than one charity, it is up to you to donate the specific proceeds to each charity. We cannot issue checks to any individual or organization that will also benefit from your event. PORTION OF PROCEEDS: If you want to set up a Portion of Proceeds fundraiser, please contact us for approval before you start to market your product/service as a benefit for One Love. After it has been approved, you may use our logo on your website and marketing materials must specify what percentage of your profits will be donated to One Love. HOW WE CAN HELP EVENT PROMOTION: We can help promote your event through our social media channels by reposting/re-sharing your post regarding the event. STAFF ATTENDANCE: While we wish we could attend every One Love fundraiser, our schedules and budgets do not always gives us that flexibility. It is no guarantee that we can make it to your event, but we will certainly try. Keep us posted on the date/time/location and we will do our best. SPONSORSHIPS: We can provide you with a letter of acknowledgement that serves to legitimize your event as a benefit for One Love. We can provide you with a copy of our IRS Letter of Determination to further legitimize that your event is to benefit One Love. Because any sponsorships you receive are not coming directly to the Foundation, we are unable to issue tax receipts or let you use our 501(c)3 status for any sponsorship donations you receive. MATERIALS: We can send you One Love banners, postcards and brochures to give your event branding and legitimacy. While we are unable to send One Love gear to outfit your volunteers or participants, we offer a bulk rate option on our online store. PORTION OF PROCEEDS: If it has been approved from a One Love staff member, we can re-post and share it with our community on social media. However, we cannot actively promote or endorse your product/service. We also cannot sell your product or service on our online store.

5 ONE LOVE 101 THE ONE LOVE STORY The mission of the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love is to end relationship violence by educating, empowering and activating young people in a movement for change. One Love was founded in 2010 to honor Yeardley Love, a UVA student who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before their graduation. After her death, Yeardley s friends and family were shocked to learn the statistics about relationship violence and to realize that no one knew how at risk Yeardley really was. Today, One Love honors Yeardley by working with young people across the country to raise awareness about the warning signs of abuse and activate communities to work to change the statistics around relationship violence. In the last 14 months, One Love has introduced nearly 35,000 students to its flagship program, Escalation, and has reached 400 colleges and 150 high schools in 43 states. THE ONE LOVE MOVEMENT ESCALATION WORKSHOP: Escalation is a powerful, emotionally-engaging 90-minute film based workshop that educates your community about relationship violence and empowers you to work for change. Research based. Facilitated by students. Philanthropically funded. #THATSNOTLOVE: 57% of college students report it is difficult to identify dating violence. The #ThatsNotLove campaign launched in October 2015, provides short, shareable digital content that could help young people and engage them more deeply in Our work. #ThatsNotLove defines the gray area between love and control, so you know relationship abuse when it happens and before it escalates. Because I Love You and Couplets are two of the five parts have already been released for this campaign. YARDS FOR YEARDLEY: In 2015, the collegiate lacrosse community started the Million Yards for Yeardley campaign to honor Yeardley and to show support for One Love s work to end relationship violence. Over 150 teams have already signed up this year!

Below are three components that should be included in your event: EDUCATE Your team can play a critical role in activating communities to work to change the statistics around relationship violence. As we understand how important is to host tournaments/clinics/games in Yeardley s honor, One Love s goal is to educate young people about relationship violence its risks and the warning signs. Escalation Workshop: We require that all athletic teams (high school age and above) participate in our educational curriculum, the Escalation workshop. Escalation is a powerful, emotionally-engaging 90-minute film based workshop that educations your community about relationship violence and empowers you to work for change. Parent Screening and Discussion: Parents are also strongly encouraged to participate in an Escalation screening and discussion. This can be done together or scheduled at a separate date and time from the student workshop. 10 FUNDRAISING AND EVENT PLANNING 101 BEST PRACTICES AND FAQS: No matter what your fundraising activity, it s important to keep your donors engaged, to spread the word about your efforts, and to give proper recognition to those who show support. Inspire others by educating yourself about The One Love Foundation and its mission to end relationship violence. Showing your commitment to this cause will motivate your donors to take action and contribute to your efforts. You are helping educate more schools and communities across the country about relationship violence and its risks and warning signs. Refer to the One Love 101 document for helpful talking points. Take advantage of your local newspaper or TV station to share your story. The more people who know about your fundraising efforts, the better. Send personal thank you notes to everyone who donates. Take the time to express your gratitude in a meaningful way by making your donors feel a part of your efforts to end relationship violence. Don t forget that a matching gift can double a pledge, so encourage your donors to check into the matching gift programs at their companies. Share updates and keep your donors posted on your fundraising efforts. COVERING YOUR COSTS There are many details to consider when you are planning a One Love fundraiser. One of the most important is your budget specifically, how to keep your costs to a minimum when balancing various expenses. SPONSORSHIPS Securing sponsorships is a great and often ideal way to cover your costs. Sponsorships can come from local or national businesses; it all depends on who you ask and how you structure your proposal. An important factor to consider when putting your proposal together is how your sponsor(s) will benefit from contributing to your efforts. Some incentives include free entry, free raffle tickets, or logo placement and/or URL on all event materials, etc. Your sponsorship proposal should be short and to the point. First, provide background on your event and why you need help. Second, put together sponsorship levels to allow companies to choose how much they would like to donate. As your sponsorship levels/amounts increase, make sure to provide more incentives. To choose a donation amount for each level, it will help to figure out the total amount of your expenses and how many companies you will approach. IN-KIND DONATIONS If you are unable to secure monetary sponsorships to cover your costs, consider reaching out to local businesses for inkind donations. In other words, will a local catering company donate their services to provide food for your guests? Will a local printer issue event flyers and/or programs free of charge? Break down your expenses by category and think about what businesses near you may be able to donate that specific item or service so that the expense is not your responsibility. Similar to a structured sponsorship proposal, your in-kind donation proposal should include incentives. EXPENSE FUNDRAISING If sponsorships and in-kind donations do not work out, you can always have a separate fundraising campaign to cover your expenses. For instance, ask your family members or closest friends to make a donation to your expense fundraising they are the folks who know you most and will trust that their donations will in fact go to cover the

11 expenses of your event. Or, tie expense fundraising into the night of your event, whether it s with donation jars or separate raffle. SAMPLE LETTERS AND THANK YOUS It s very important to get to the heart of what One Love means to you. Tell your story, and make your pitch clear, compelling, and personal. Equally important is saying thank you. Show how appreciative you are of your donor s support and give them an update of your progress. Below find sample letters that you can use and edit to make it your own. SAMPLE FUNDRAISING LETTER OR EMAIL Dear Friends and Family: I have very special news to share with you. Please let me take this opportunity to tell you about the exciting new challenge in my life. I am training for the Baltimore Running Festival on behalf of the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love! I have chosen to make this commitment and then you will understand why I am so excited and determined to finish this (FILL IN EVENT) on [DATE]. The One Love Foundation s ambitious goal is to end relationship violence by engaging young people in a movement for change. It was created in 2010 to honor the memory of Yeardley Love, a UVA senior who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend just weeks short of graduation. After her death, Yeardley s family and friends were surprised to learn the statistics that 1 in 3 women in this country will be in a violent relationship during her lifetime. Today, One Love develops compelling educational content that sparks new and novel discussions among workshop participants, inspiring them to work together to affect change in their communities. I am eager to support One Love because (FILL IN REASON FOR RUNNING). I have joined a team of dedicated runners, all training hard and fundraising to support One Love s work. I have set a personal goal to raise at least (FILL IN FUNDRAISING GOAL) for [EVENT]. I am writing each of you to ask for your support. Your donation is tax-deductible and no donation is too small! I want to thank you in advance for your love and support! This is an exciting time and I hope you will choose to support me in my efforts to make a difference. I will be thinking of each of you as I cross the finish line on [DATE]. LINK TO DONATION PAGE/CROWDRISE PAGE All the best, [YOUR NAME] SAMPLE THANK YOU LETTER OR EMAIL Dear [NAME OF DONOR], Thank you for supporting my One Love efforts to benefit the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love. Fundraising for One Love has been a truly rewarding experience for me, enriched by your support. In total, I raised [TOTAL FUNDRAISIING DOLLARS] for The One Love Foundation but I could never have accomplished this without your help. With gratitude, [YOUR NAME]

12 TAX-EXEMPTION: HOW IT WORKS WITH TEAM ONE LOVE The One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization designated by the Internal Revenue Code. Donations made directly to One Love are tax -deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. GENERAL FUNDRAISING How can I guarantee my donors that their contributions to my One Love fundraising efforts are tax-deductible? Encourage all of your donors to make a donation online via your personal Crowdrise fundraising page or directly on the One Love website. They will be emailed a receipt directly after the donation is made. Or, your donors can send a check directly to One Love; checks should be made payable to The One Love Foundation with Your Name and Your Event in the memo line. That way, will know to properly credit your fundraising page. What if a donor writes a check directly to me? Or, what if they give me cash? Can they still get a write-off? If you receive a check written out to you, either ask your donor to issue a new one written out to the One Love Foundation, or endorse the check over to us. Cash donations are always discouraged, but they can be paired with a Contribution Form that captures donor information, such as name, mailing address, phone and donation amount. Need contribution forms for your event? Just shoot us an email at info@joinonelove.org for a copy. HELPFUL HINT: You can always suggest to have them donate on their phone to your Crowdrise page or One Love website. I M THROWING MY OWN EVENT I m charging a registration fee at my event but am not collecting it via my personal fundraising page. Instead, participants are paying with cash at the door. If I take the total amount and get a certified check issued at my local bank, can each participant still get a write -off? We can only issue a tax receipt to the person whose name is on the check. That said, if you include a list of each donor with their donation amount and address, we can credit them for their contribution. Or, you can have Contribution Forms on hand that they can fill out after giving you cash. If possible, we encourage you to have your donors make a gift to your Crowdrise page, One Love website or via check. I am seeking sponsors for my event to help me cover costs. Can they get receipted for a donation? If the sponsorship donation is made directly to your personal fundraising page or via a check to the Foundation on, the sponsor will get a tax write-off. If the purpose of the sponsorship is to cover your expenses and thus the contribution is made directly to you, we cannot issue a receipt. However, to thank sponsors for their contributions, we can issue a letter to acknowledge that they made a donation to your event. What if a company issues an in-kind donation, such as a raffle item or a catered meal? We can issue an acknowledgment for an in-kind donation, but cannot put a value on any such donation. It is up to the donor to appraise their contribution with their accountants. IN SUMMARY: The One Love Foundation can only issue tax receipts for monetary donations made directly to us, whether that is in the form of a check written out to One Love Foundation, or the donation was made online through a Crowdrise One Love fundraising page or One Love Foundation donation page. In-kind donations and sponsorships can be acknowledged, but One Love is unable to provide values for any such donations made to a One Love fundraiser. It is up to the sponsor/in-kind donor to work with their accountants to get a write-off.
