Raising diagnostic confidence Breast ultrasound solutions

Focusing on your patients and your clinical workflow Keeping pace with patient requirements, insurance providers, and new technologies are just some of the challenges of the healthcare community today. Everyone wants the best care possible patients and clinicians alike. At Philips Healthcare, that s our goal as well. That s why we offer leadingedge ultrasound solutions for hospitals, breast imaging centers, clinics, and interventional suites. Clinically proven solutions designed around you The Philips iu22, CompactXtreme, ClearVue*, Sparq and HD ultrasound systems employ some of the most advanced technologies available today. Technologies with clinically proven results. Technologies designed to help you manage the intricacies of breast disease and the unique needs of these patients. Technologies that allow you to capture accurate and precise data, and diagnose with confidence. Exceptional tissue differentiation with clinically proven** SonoCT SonoCT compound imaging and spatial compound imaging acquire multiple lines of sight simultaneously without any special transducer maneuvers. In real time, these individual angles are compounded to provide an image with exceptional clarity and accuracy. Images are virtually free of artifact and clutter, including those artifacts associated with structures, such as Cooper s ligaments. Conventional Imaging SonoCT Imaging SonoCT clearly displays the subtle differences in tissue texture throughout the entire breast anatomy. You can confidently differentiate between solid and cystic structures, reducing the need for unnecessary biopsies, and refer patients for treatment earlier. Broadband beamforming processes the entire range of signals The system s broadband digital beamformer uses the full range of ultrasound frequencies to capture, preserve, and process the entire tissue signature. This is especially important in breast imaging where you need to be able to differentiate between the wide variety of subtleties in tissue texture throughout the breast. Broadband beamforming gives you an increased amount of accurate and clear clinical data. Glandular Muscle Fat * 510(k) pending ** SonoCT is the only clinically proven, real-time compound imaging technology. The Scientifica global study on image quality concluded that SonoCT improved tissue differentiation in 96.6% of the study cases, and changed patient management in 17.6% of cases. 2

SonoCT and XRES work in tandem to display exceptionally clear images. Borders are well defined, tissue structure is clearly differentiated, and irregularities seen in solid masses are clearly depicted. The advanced imaging modes on the new ClearVue ultrasound system support breast exams in specialty office, clinic, and imaging lab environments. Advanced XRES takes image clarity to the next level Using expertise gained from MR, Philips Healthcare brought XRES adaptive image processing to ultrasound. XRES imaging algorithms and spatial compounding reduce speckle noise and add a new level of refinement by improving conspicuity of existing tissue patterns and bringing margins and borders into even greater definition. Tissue aberration correction technology For your patients with fatty breast tissue, our innovative tissue aberration correction technology on the iu22 compensates for changes in speed of sound to display clear and detailed 2D and 3D images of breast anatomy. Our linear transducers are now optimized with tissue aberration correction to provide superb imaging performance for all breast patient types. Using panoramic imaging, you can capture the entire landscape in a single view. It s easy to perform, and the extended view allows a global representation of breast architecture, large masses, and multiple cysts. Reduced artifacts with Tissue Harmonic Imaging (THI) Because both fundamental and harmonic frequencies provide important diagnostic information, THI provides clearer images with fewer artifacts, particularly in cystic structures. Image contrast resolution is improved, and acoustic enhancement and shadowing are easily demonstrated. Improved detection of abnormalities with elastography Elastography, available on the iu22 system with L12-5 and L17-5 transducers and Advanced Breast Tissue Specific Imaging (TSI) preset, enables you to differentiate relative stiffness of tissue through sonographic examination. Clinical studies have shown that a combination of ultrasound elastography and sonography could help differentiate lesions and potentially reduce unnecessary biopsies. 1 Elastography, on the L12-5 and now on the L17-5, provides highly sensitive and specific information that allows you to visualize, record, and report on tissue stiffness parameters. The image above shows a 2D image on the left and an elastography image on the right. 3

Extend your boundaries with Volumetric capabilities the next step in breast imaging By integrating volume imaging into exams, you expand your data and enhance clinical diagnosis of your patients. A volume set (3D data set) can be interrogated again and again, and in new ways during exams as well as after your patients have been released. You can display MPRs (multiplanar reconstructions) and 2D images from the volume set. Use islice, a precision tomographic volumetric tool, to display a volume set as 2D images and select the interval spacing and number of images for thorough assessment of the targeted area. islice is especially helpful when assessing the true extent of a mass. islice allows you to select 4, 9, 16 or 25 precision tomographic slices for thorough breast assessment. The MPR view provides the ability to see this mass in three orthogonal planes. The third plane and thick slice view provide additional diagnostic information, and are obtainable only with volumetric imaging. Slice plane, another volumetric tool, displays the multiplane intersections, such as this mass, for improved spatial localization and assessment. 4

leading-edge technologies The iu22 VL13-5 linear array transducer provides high performance 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging for breast studies. The VL13-5 transducer supports fully quantifiable volume acquisition for assessment of lesion dimension. This MPR display of a breast mass includes the volume measurements. Increasing diagnostic confidence with exceptional clarity Our high frequency linear transducers, up to 17 MHz, maximize detail resolution across your entire patient population including the difficult to image providing excellent 2D and volume imaging. The L15-7io, with its small footprint and uniquelyshaped ergonomic handle, is excellent for superficial imaging and incision site access. The VL13-5 transducer on the iu22 system allows clinicians to employ the rapidly developing technology of volume imaging. Its compact, ergonomic shape is designed to help reduce the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The elastography feature on the iu22 L12-5 and L17-5 provides a highly sensitive exam tool to help distinguish between cystic and solid masses in the breast. Elastography on the iu22 allows for the comparison of a traditional 2D image with an elastography image. In this image, patient with a breast lesion shows the area of stiffness to be larger on the elastography image. Our strain-based elastography technology is highly sensitive obtained merely by patient breathing or cardiac motion. 5

Streamline your workflow Achieve efficiency and consistency with SmartExam The increasing case load of ultrasound departments is driving ultrasound clinicians to find ways to increase productivity and improve efficiencies when performing ultrasound exams. The iu22 protocols feature has already been clinically shown to reduce ultrasound exam time by 30 percent to 50 percent. Now, programming a new exam type with Philips exclusive SmartExam feature is as easy as performing the exam itself. SmartExam on the iu22, CompactXtreme, Sparq and ClearVue 550 enhances and streamlines workflow for each sonographer, and across the entire department. It s customizable you design it to be exactly what you need. Create a SmartExam based on your department s standards or society guidelines, and be confident that each breast exam captures all the required views. You can create multiple SmartExams so you take full advantage of time savings and address your variety of exam needs area of interest, left breast, right breast, post-procedure follow-up, screening, and others. By using SmartExam, you can streamline any type of exam that is performed in your lab those that are routine as well as those infrequently performed. You can count on all your exams being faster and more consistent. Systems designed for every user You ll find that Philips systems are designed with you in mind. System ergonomics include unique features that enhance your scanning experience: Monitors mounted on articulating arms allow you to adjust your display for the best viewing angle based on each patient, each exam. It s no longer one size fits all. Virtually flickerless flat-panel displays are easy on your eyes all day long, regardless of environment lighting. icommand wireless voice control of system functions on the iu22 increases position options during exams and reduces reach and repeated moves. You will have more time to focus on your patients and the art of sonography when you can leave keystrokes and spelling to SmartExam. What do you do over and over every day that takes so much time? Annotation. SmartExam to your rescue. Built-in automation annotates every image based on the criteria you defined when you designed the protocol. 6

Using quantification tools to analyze structure and pathology QLAB quantification software, available with an identical user interface on cart and at a PC workstation, enables comprehensive review and manipulation of volume and data. What is the size of the suspicious area in the breast? With the iu22 system s 2D and volume data and advanced quantification tools, you can interrogate that information and increase your diagnostic data and understanding of your patients disease states. In addition to islice, available on the iu22, QLAB has other display and manipulation capabilities developed for volume imaging that are also resident on the system: Thick slice imaging allows you to select a slice of data, control the thickness, and manipulate it the same as any other volume. Thick slice imaging increases contrast resolution and is especially helpful when evaluating lesion borders. Slice plane imaging allows you to easily display multiplane intersections for improved spatial localization and assessment all contained within one image. Automated stacked contours facilitates quick and easy calculations of a volume based on the selected content, such as cystic structures. Color flow quantification enables you to generate information about the flow characteristics of lesions. Flow, vascularity, and vascularization flow indices quantify color flow using ROI and GI 3DQ plug-ins. QLAB plug-ins allow you to configure quantification capabilities to your needs. GI 3DQ open, view, and quantify 3D data sets, and display, review, and select 2D images from the islice volume display. The automated stacked contours feature enables you to quickly and easily calculate a volume based on the selected content. ROI increase the consistency and reliability of acoustic measurements while reducing the effort required to successfully perform motion-compensated Region of Interest analysis. MVI review long loops and map contrast agent progression with the MicroVascular Imaging plug-in.
