Entry Criteria The minimum requirements for appointment and other qualities considered desirable are detailed in the attached person specification. Training Programme The Programme Director is Dr Sarah Merrett Consultant Orthodontist, at the University Dental Hospital Cardiff. The Programme is monitored through the Deanery Orthodontic Specialist Training Committee, chaired by Ms Angharad Brown, the Specialty Adviser to the Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Each hospital participating in the training programme has a nominated clinical training supervisor. The post includes a 3:2 split. Two days in the Royal Gwent Hospital Newport and three days at the Dental Hospital, Cardiff. The quality management of the training opportunities, including this split of clinical sessions across the two units, will be reviewed six months following commencement of training, in the first instance. Successful completion of the training programme will include satisfactory completion of the ISFE examination in Orthodontics. The Principal Trainer will be Mr Peter Durning, the other trainer, based in the Royal Gwent Hospital, will be Ms Angharad Brown, Consultant Orthodontist. PARTICIPATING HOSPITALS University Dental Hospital, Cardiff The University Dental Hospital is situated in Cardiff just off the A48 on the site of the main Cardiff University School of Medicine campus. The Department has a 12-chair polyclinic. Full digital imaging for both Clinical Photography and Radiography (including CBCT scanning) is available. There are a range of Multidisciplinary clinics with Clinics involving Orthognathic and Minor Oral Surgery, Restorative and Implant provision, Paedodontic and other disciplines. Regular Cleft Clinics are held in the unit. Regular Audit meetings are held and Senior Specialist Registrar / Post CCST Trainees are expected to play an active role in preparation and presentation of projects. A specially prepared database is available for the Senior Specialist Registrar / Post CCST Trainee to record his/her treatment portfolio and prepare logbooks etc. The Post CCST trainees will also be expected to participate in the Departmental Journal Club to help in the preparation for the critical appraisal section of ISFE, and didactic teaching sessions. The new Maxillo-facial Department was commissioned in 1995 and offers a fully refurbished integrated department offering a comprehensive clinical service in Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery (three full time Consultants and one part-time), Orthodontics (two Consultants) and Restorative Dentistry. There is a full range of facilities including dedicated clinical, laboratory and nursing services to support the department. Full computerised digitising and orthognathic planning facilities are available. The unit traditionally supplies the DGH training programme for the Post CCST trainee in Orthodontics. Research The Trainee will be expected to continue with active involvement in research consistent with the needs of their training. Study Leave Trainees will be expected to attend national and international meetings as appropriate to their stage of training, subject to the appropriate discretion of employing Consultants in Trusts. Attendance at postgraduate courses is strongly encouraged and trainees are expected to present papers at Unit, National and International Meetings. The Postgraduate Dean has developed a programme of modular workshops, to address generic educational needs to all trainees in all disciplines. This will cover management issues, clinical effectiveness, medical education, medical law and medical ethics. All Post CCST trainees will be expected to attend these courses. Conditions of Service a) The posts are covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Whitley Council Terms and Conditions of Service as amended in negotiation with the Trust Medical and Dental Staff Negotiating Committee. Details of these may be obtained from the Dental Personnel Department. b) The posts are nominally full time but requests for less than full time training (LTFT) would be considered. Trainees will be advised of the working pattern for these posts prior to taking up your appointment. c) Applications for annual leave must be submitted in writing to the Personnel Department at least six weeks before leave is taken. It must also be requested having first taken into account your colleagues leave so as to enable adequate clinical cover to be maintained. Conditions of Appointment a) You must provide us with evidence which is acceptable to the Occupational Health Department, that you are not a carrier of Hepatitis B. This would normally be a pathology report from a laboratory in the UK or alternatively a report from another NHS Occupational Health Department within the UK. It will not be possible to confirm this appointment unless this condition is met. Before starting work you may therefore need to attend the Occupational Health Department for assessment. If this is not possible, then you must attend on the day you start work. Please note that the Health Board also implements the recommendations of Welsh Health Circular WHC (2006) 86 for all new appointments which refers to checks for TB and blood borne viruses. b) The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will require the successful candidate to have, and maintain, full registration with the General Dental Council throughout the duration of the contract. c) As you will only be indemnified for duties undertaken on behalf of the Cardiff and Vale ULHB and Aneurin Bevan Health Board, you are strongly advised to ensure that you have appropriate Professional Defence Organisation Cover for duties outside the scope of the UHB, and for private activity within the ULHB. d) The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 impose a legal responsibility on ULHBs for all staff that refers patients for medical radiation exposure such as diagnostic x-rays to supply sufficient data to enable those considering the request to decide whether the procedure is justified. Job Limitation At no time should you work at a level exceeding your competence. All dental staff therefore have a responsibility to inform those supervising their duties if they have any concerns regarding this or if they feel that they are not competent to perform a particular duty.
