Central Coast Recovery College The philosophy of the Central Coast Recovery College is working partnerships recognising the expertise of those with a lived experience of mental illness and the skills of mental health professionals, harnessing opportunities to work together to deliver recovery focused education. The Central Coast Recovery College aims to promote wellbeing, education and recovery, by providing learning opportunities for people to manage their own health, self-care and recovery journey. The Central Coast Recovery College provides educational courses and workshops on a range of topics with a focus on mental health and wellbeing. Specific programs have been developed from the ground up based on the current identified needs of consumers and carers on the Central Coast. These programs have been a co-production between consumers, carers and mental health clinicians working together at every stage. The Central Coast Recovery College also improves access to existing programs by working collaboratively with service providers to deliver programs in partnership. 2 3
Programs developed in collaboration with consumers and carers for the Central Coast Navigating Central Coast Mental Health Services This four hour workshop aims to provide people with the knowledge of local mental health services to improve ease of access. The program defines the roles of different mental health teams in CCLHD along with the referral process and program eligibility criteria. We also cover: to call the mental health telephone access line, what they do and what they don t do. Mental health support services and partners in our local community what they do and how to access them. How to get the help or support you need as a carer or consumer. Legal Aspects of Mental Illness and Care This four hour capacity building program empowers individuals to develop an understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities as a consumer or carer. This workshop will explore the Mental Health Act, Community Treatment Orders, The Mental Health Tribunal and where to access legal assistance locally, should you require support. Peer Work Foundations A three hour workshop designed for those interested in peer work within mental health services. Participants will gain an understanding of peer work roles within the health service and broader community, along with what skills and qualifications are required to become peer educators. We will discuss The Mental Health Commission Strategic Plan recommendations and how this will influence peer work within mental health services in a positive way. Understanding Depression, How to Help a Friend This four hour workshop explores the facts and realities of depression, diagnosis, treatment and specifically how to best support a friend or loved one with depression. Furthermore when you may need to seek professional assistance and where best to access these services on the Central Coast. Other programs offered in partnership with mental health services across the Central Coast Active & Healthy Group The Active & Healthy Group is a support; education and activity group for people 65 years and older experiencing low mood, depression and/or anxiety. The group runs for six two hour sessions per week over six weeks. Mental Health First Aid A two day course teaching adults how to provide initial support and assistance to someone developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. Managing Stress & Increasing Resilience Run by Uniting Care Mental Health, this workshop is designed to assist carers to identify and manage their stress and develop effective coping strategies to increase resilience, such as relaxation and problem solving. Parents Supporting Teens Run by Uniting Care Mental Health, this course is designed to help parents understand what normal adolescent behaviour is and what mental illness is. It offers ideas and strategies for parents to support an unwell teen. Life Connections Run in collaboration with the Iris Foundation, these workshops are 3 hours over 6 weeks focused on resilience building, exploring: Being aware of your needs and strengths Setting realistic goals Valuing yourself Having a positive frame of mind Feeling connected with others and to your community. 4 5
Semester 1 August, September, October and November Better Health Self-Management This is a practical skills workshop run by Central Coast Health Self-Management Support Services, for anyone with ongoing health conditions be it physical or psychological. The workshops are 2.5hours a week over six weeks. In a Better Health workshop you will learn: How to best work with your doctor and healthcare team Ways to manage difficult emotions Setting achievable goals Getting the most out of life Managing your symptoms The benefits of healthy eating and physical activity Course dates and locations are listed on the following pages. A preview of Semester 2 The second semester of The Central Coast Recovery College will introduce further new programs such as: The Journey to Recovery A 10 week change enhancement program, based on the Collaborative Recovery Model. This once a week program is for individuals with a lived experience of mental illness designed to empower individuals to recognise their strengths and goals, along with providing the support to build individual capacity and self-management skills. No. You do not need to be referred. How many people are in a class? The sizes will vary depending on the style of the course with the average being around 7-15 students. Who will teach the courses? The courses are taught by various people, some may have a lived experience of mental illness, some are carers and some are health care workers. Most courses have two educators at each session. What do courses cost? All courses are free of charge. Do you supply food and refreshments? No. Please bring along your own lunch and snacks. Can I bring a support person? We are happy for you to bring a support person to the course. Who can attend the Recovery College? Specific eligibility criteria for each workshop are listed with course details. What happens if I can t attend on the day? Contact our team to let them know on 4320 5445. What if I can no longer attend any classes?
