ABOUT SIX TIMES OPEN The SIX TIMES OPEN campaign launched in November 2016 by fraternal twins Jonathan and David Stretton-Downes. SIX TIMES OPEN is based around Jonathan s upcoming 6th heart surgery which will take place in 2017, through which through which they aim to raise brand awareness and 100K for the work of the British Heart Foundation. This campaign contextualizes the amazing research that the British Heart Foundation carry out on a daily basis and show that these experiences will change us but they will not reduce us! The goal of the campaign is to challenge and inspire through adversity and to show that events such as 6X open heart surgery don t have to define you or dictate your life! CAMPAIGN MESSAGES Change public perception of stereotype of people with heart conditions. Show that long term health conditions don t have to dictate your life. The BHF are a donation-dependent charity and are the biggest independent funder of cardiovascular research in the UK, spending around 100 million every year on life saving research to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease and related conditions are the UK s single biggest killer, killing one in four people and before the BHF was established in 1961, 8 out of 10 babies born in the UK with a heart defect did not survive to their first birthday. Today, around 8 out of 10 survive to adulthood. I was born with Aortic Stenosis and at only 6 weeks old, underwent an operation to correct this where our parents were given only a 50/50 chance that I would survive. This was my 1st operation. I am both lucky and humbled to be part of the 1st generation of survivors and 28 years on, hundreds of hours of surgery, and 5 operations later, now need my 6th open heart operation.

HOW IS THE MONEY SPENT? 100 pays for one of our early career researchers to carry out a day s worth of research. We currently fund around 500 post-doctoral scientists who work in research teams right across the UK on projects to better understand how to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure heart disease 1,000 will buy a brand new piece of equipment that allows biologists to separate tiny proteins from the complex mixtures found in blood and saliva this can help them identify which proteins are important risk factors in coronary heart disease. 5,000 pays for a month s research to grow new blood vessels a vital part of any future therapy to repair damaged hearts. 10,000 will pay for one month of a project to build new healthy pieces of heart. New heart tissue could be used in the future to treat heart failure. 25,000 could pay for everything a BHF Professor needs to run their lab for a month. Our BHF Professors are in charge of busy laboratories, supervising multiple research projects. 100,000 pays for a PhD student s grant and their research for three years: we support over 300 scientists and clinicians starting their cardiovascular research careers across the UK.
