We celebrate the power of empathy and respect in improving the lives of community members everyday throughout San Mateo County. PCRC believes that empathy is one of the most important life skills an individual can have to succeed in our ever-changing world. Empathy is foundational to the ability to resolve conflict, to collaborate in teams, to align interests, to listen effectively, to make decisions, to solve problems and to drive change. We understand that youth, families and even communities need to be taught these skills and supported in building empathy and respect. PCRC is a nationally recognized leader in mediation, facilitation, training and coaching serving more than 14,000 people on an annual basis. PCRC supports communities throughout San Mateo County through three key initiatives: Engaging Communities Initiative brings together the ideas and voices of all people in our communities and creates opportunities for each of us to have a say in the decisions that affect our lives. Strengthening Families Initiative assists parents in utilizing community services, maintaining family relationships, and building their leadership skills so they can support their children s education. Empowering Youth Initiative - creates opportunities for young people to reshape their communities and manage conflicts, by becoming critical thinkers, youth leaders and active participants in developing solutions. Through these key initiatives, PCRC looks for new opportunities to serve San Mateo County in innovative and collaborative ways. Greater diversity, evolving technology and a booming economy are changing the landscape of the communities we serve. While these changes create new and unique challenges, they also bring about immense opportunities to grow and work together. We invite you to become a part of this worthwhile effort. Words From the Executive Director Dear Potential Sponsor: PCRC s long-standing mission is to assist clients in solving their most complex personal, organizational, and social challenges through training, mediation and facilitation services. We help to empower individuals to advocate for themselves and create positive change in their communities. In the past year, PCRC recognized that social tensions were on the rise. These divisions have played out at our schools with incidents of violence, on social media, and in civic circles where respectful discourse is increasingly rare. We realized that our services in Restorative Practices are needed now more than ever. With the support of key partners, we trained over 4000 individuals, of which 60% were youth. PCRC partnered with close to 35 schools to provide training in Conflict Resolution, Communication, Restorative Practices, among other topics. We conducted dialogues between youth and law enforcement to improve the lines of communication, breakdown stereotypes and rebuild trust where it has been broken. Our generous supporters provide the resources needed to focus on these on the efforts to create sustainable improvements in communication and conflict resolution, and make communities stronger and safer. Last month, PCRC hosted a two-day Action Summit that brought together over 425 adults and youth. The participants were inspired by our speakers and the stories of community members personal experiences. Participants helped identify and design innovative strategies for addressing divisions in our county. Most importantly, they committed to taking action to change the narrative for our community. The action summit was a pivotal moment for San Mateo County, because, it once again highlighted that empathy and respect are foundational skills for people to engage in a meaningful dialogue.
