Instructor: Chuck Aldridge, OD Category: Treatment/Management Anterior Segment COPE ID: 46845-AS Description: The amniotic membrane is the innermost of the three layers that form the fetal membrane. It is a biologic tissue with anti-angiogenic, anti-scarring, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that promotes healing of the ocular surface. When applied to the cornea, it helps facilitate epithelial healing and encourages re-epithelialization. This symposium will review the newer sutureless amniotic membranes that are available for optometric use and discuss their current indications including dry eye, recurrent corneal erosions and neurotrophic keratitis. TAOP 116 th Annual Congress Physicians Program Page 5 About Our Presenters: Dr. Paul Ajamian is a graduate of the University of Vermont and the New England College of Optometry. He completed a two-year Fellowship at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He was instrumental in starting the nation s first true comanagement practice in 1982, then called the VEF Educational and Diagnostic Center. Since 1984 he has served as Center Director of Omni Eye Services of Atlanta, and has mentored many doctors that have started centers modeled after Omni. He is a founding member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, the national organization dedicated to disseminating the latest research and clinical knowledge on glaucoma. He is author of two textbooks, and is editor of Review of Optometry s popular monthly column Clinical Quandries. He is an internationally known lecturer, and serves as an adjunct faculty member for 14 schools and colleges of optometry. In 2000, he served as President of the Georgia Optometric Association after having served as Legislative Chairman and PAC Chairman for many years. He currently serves as General Chairman of the Education Committee for SECO International, sponsor of the largest educational meeting in the country. He also serves the profession as a Founding Board Member of the American Board of Optometry (ABO), the organization charged with creating a Board Certification process that will allow Doctors of Optometry to demonstrate lifelong learning. Dr. Ajamian himself is Board Certified by the American Board of Optometry. He completed his term as Chairman of the ABO in November of 2013.In 1995, Dr. Ajamian was chosen as the Optometrist of the South by his peers, and in 2000 was voted one of the ten Optometrists of the Decade by Optometric Management magazine and its readers. In 2014, Dr. Ajamian received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor for lifetime achievement bestowed by the American Optometric Association. In June of 2015, Dr. Paul Ajamian was inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame. Dr. Richard Kattouf is a nationally recognized lecturer and consultant on a broad range of subject matter relative to the practice of Optometry. He has lectured at nearly every significant state and national meeting during his career. Kattouf Consulting Services is based in Mooresville, North Carolina. Dr. Kattouf has provided consulting services for more than 3,500 clients including both Optometrists and Ophthalmologists relating to practice management and other business matters. He received his Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor of Visual Science from Illinois College of Optometry. He received his Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Physics from The Ohio State University. Dr. Chuck Aldridge graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1980 and has a MBA from Western Carolina University. During his 37 years of experience he has specialized in treating dry eye syndrome and contact lenses. He is a member of American Optometric Association, North Carolina Optometric Association, Optometric Glaucoma Society and American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Chuck Aldridge is the prestigious recipient of the Fellow of American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Chuck Aldridge s practice and hometown is Burnsville, North Carolina. He selected Optometry as he always wanted to work in the healthcare fields. He preferred working and serving Optometry patients in rural areas. He is married and has 5 adult children. He enjoys traveling and scuba diving. Matthew Lowrance, DO, Knoxville TN, graduated from the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Michigan State University and his Retinal Fellowship at the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Lowrance is affiliated with Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Parkwest Medical Center, Roane Medical Center, Starr Regional Medical Center Etowah and Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens. Anthony DeWilde, OD, FAAO, St. Louis, Missouri, is a graduate of the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry. He completed the KCVAMC Optometry residency in 2008. Dr. DeWilde is an Adjunct Instructor for the Universityof Missouri College of Optometry. In addition to seeing patients in the general clinic, he also works with TeleRetinal Imaging Program for diabetic patients and provides patient care for the low vision rehabilitation clinic. Dr. DeWilde is passionate about education and has taught in a variety of settings including educating residents at the VA, students at University of Missouri St. Louis, College of Optometry, and optometrists at both state and national meetings.

TAOP 116 th Annual Congress Physicians Program Page 6 James Deom graduated from Wilkes University with a Bachelors in Biology and went on to The Pennsylvania College of Optometry where he was the first student to graduate with an OD degree and an MPH. His MPH coursework was focused on Brain Injury and Vision rehabilitation. Upon graduation Dr. Deom founded the Scleral Lens Institute which focuses on providing scleral lens treatment to individuals. Dr. Deom is active in the Pennsylvania Optometric Society and is proud to have been a past AOSA national president. Dr. Deom consults for several Dry eye and Contact lens companies and enjoys bringing specialty lens education to students and practicing doctors. Dr Deom lectures both nationally and internationally on Dry Eye, scleral lenses, practice management, and brain injury. Dr. Deom also enjoys taking care of individuals who have had brain injury and children with learning disabilities. Currently Dr. Deom and his wife are working on interdisciplinary care with their local health network and private practice. Dr. Deom is an avid runner and triathlete. He has competed in dozens of running races including 10 marathons and 2 full distance Ironmans.
