BMP SYMPOSIUM 2010 INVITATION Dear Colleagues: It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the BMP Symposium 2010 on Extended Clinical Applications of Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (rhbmp-2) in San Diego. After numerous animal and human research studies that first began in 1965, the US Food and Drug Administration cleared rhbmp-2 in combination with an acellular collagen sponge (rhbmp-2/acs) for two dental and oral and maxillofacial surgery indications (socket grafting and sinus augmentation) in March of 2007. In just 2 short years, it has met and even exceeded its clinical promise of bone regeneration without using the patient s own bone. Extended applications in horizontal and vertical ridge augmentations, ridge splitting, implant and inadequate graft salvage, alveolar clefts, orthognathic surgery, and continuity defects have shown that rhbmp-2/acs can replace autogenous grafting in many other applications, thereby providing reduced complication potential and morbidity for patients. The symposium is designed to present the specific indications, techniques, doses, comaterials, costs, and outcomes for these extended applications by the researchers and clinicians with the most thorough scientific and clinical experience using rhbmp-2/acs. This course should provide the necessary information and examples so that attendees can assess each of their own patients as to the potential advantages and limitations of using rhbmp-2/acs. I hope you will find the meeting an extraordinary learning opportunity and look forward to welcoming you in San Diego. Robert E. Marx, DDS PROGRAM CHAIRMAN COURSE GOALS >> Participants will be able to understand the expanding utility of rhbmp in jaw reconstructions. >> Participants will learn specific procedures for the regeneration of bone in defects of the jaws. >> Participants will be able to decide whether rhbmp is indicated in their individual patients. OBJECTIVES >> Participants will learn the appropriate dose of rhbmp for each indication. >> Participants will understand the role of scaffolds and tenting devices to achieve the best outcome when using rhbmp. >> Participants will learn the correct application of rhbmp through hands-on practice, lectures, and seminars.
