FUNDRAISING TIPS 2016

Thank you so much for signing up to SlideRider 2016 and choosing to brave the slide and fundraise for Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens. More children are surviving cancer than ever before. In fact, for children under 15, survival has doubled since the 1970s. But we can t stop there cancer is still the leading cause of death for young people under the age of 25. So here s where you come in, we are asking you to raise a minimum sponsorship of 35 which will make a huge different to help find cures and kinder treatments for young people facing cancer. Whether you are a big kid or little kid, you can whizz down the slide with family or friends, while raising all-important cash to help beat children s cancers sooner. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT We have some great tips that can help you reach that fundraising target and maybe even smash it! Are you ready to make a splash to raise some cash?

HOW YOUR FUNDRAISING MONEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE 35 50 Buys special chemical scissors that chop up reams of DNA in a cancer cell, helping our scientists to decode their hidden genetic secrets. Chemical scissors like these helped our researchers to find the genes involved in Fanconi anaemia an inherited syndrome that can increase a child s risk of developing leukaemia. Buys over 600 special plastic dishes that let our childhood cancer scientists follow a cancer cells every move. This means they can find out how cancer cells make a break for it when they start to spread around the body, so that they can discover new ways to stop them in their tracks. 100 200 Buys a special chemical measuring tool that lets scientists find out the size of DNA molecules. These tools are being used by Professor Steven Clifford and his team in Newcastle, as they analyse the genetic signatures of children s brain tumours and use them to predict the best treatments. Buys a pipette, an essential item to make our paediatric scientists experiments accurate, giving the precise results needed to accelerate breakthroughs in the lab, and save the lives of more children. 85 Pays for the time of an expert statistician for a day. With over 6 in 10 children on clinical trials, it s essential we have these amazing minds to crunch through the numbers to uncover the best and kindest treatments.

LET S BEAT CHILDREN S CANCER SOONER MORE CHILDREN ARE SURVIVING CANCER THAN EVER BEFORE In fact, at least 15,000 more children have survived their cancer than would have done if survival had remained as it was in the 1970s. BUT CANCER IS STILL THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE UNDER 25 It takes the lives of around 550 children, teenagers and young adults each year in the UK. For young people that survive, treatments can be harsh and side-effects can have a devastating effect, some of which can last for the rest of their lives. WE MUST DO MORE Our ambition is to double the amount we spend on childhood cancer research over the next 5 to 10 years, to accelerate progress and find new cures and kinder treatments.

HOW YOUR MONEY WILL HELP CHILDREN ACROSS THE COUNTRY Alex s story Alex really enjoyed taking part in SlideRider and would recommend it to others to fundraise for other children who are diagnosed with cancer. She was diagnosed with leukaemia in Feb 2003 and underwent years of chemotherapy. She lost her hair several times during treatment and had to learn to walk again. After her experience, she is now keen to encourage others to support SlideRider. SlideRider was so much fun, I couldn t wait to go again, she said. It was great to take part and I think it s great the money raised will help fund research into cures and kinder treatment for children and young people with cancer.
