CONFERENCE GUIDE
DR. CLAUDIA WELCH # 1 (00;13) Learning about hormones can seem complex and daunting for some of us. Could you explain what hormones are and how they affect women on a daily basis? # 2 (17;46;07) How do we know when our hormones are out of balance?
DR. CLAUDIA WELCH # 3 (28;22;12) Could you talk to us about how choosing to live an authentic life meaning choosing to live with integrity helps support hormonal balance, particularly the balance of stress hormones? # 4 (48;03;12) I find that a lot of women, myself included, can have a hard time saying no to things we donʼt want to do, and yes to things that we do want to do probably because weʼve been culturally conditioned to be people pleasers. How can we start prioritizing ourselves and overcome the guilt and fear that comes with saying no?
DR. CLAUDIA WELCH # 5 (54;00;02) How are a personʼs hormones affected by trauma? # 6 (01;04;16;05) If someone has been in stress response mode for a long time and they feel as though this has become their new normal, how can they start to move out of that state and back toward balance?
DR. ROSY MANN # 1 (00:24:09) What factors need to be in place when preparing for a healthy conception? # 2 (03:13:06) According to ayurveda, conception takes place when the sperm, ovum, and uterus are all healthy. For both men and women, this reproductive health depends on the health of the reproductive tissue, shukra dhatu. Can you explain what this tissue is and how our overall health plays a part in our ability to conceive a healthy child?
DR. ROSY MANN # 3 (05:40:23) Maintaining healthy reproductive tissue, as we just discussed, is a crucial part of conception. Are there specific foods that support healthy tissue, and are there foods that should be avoided when trying to conceive? # 4 (08:54:05) What improvements or changes would you recommend that a woman make to her daily ayurvedic routine to help reduce stress and promote healthy shukra tissue? For those who donʼt currently have a specific daily routine or a dinacharya practice, how would you suggest that they begin?
DR. ROSY MANN # 5 (13:09:01) For women who may not be ready to conceive now but want to prepare their bodies for conception later in life, how can we take extra care of ourselves during menstruation in particular to both increase overall health now and also increase our fertility later? # 6 (17:29:05) What dietary changes should be made during and after pregnancy for health and balance within both mom and baby?
DR. ROSY MANN # 7 (25:41:25) For women who choose an unmedicated approach to labor, are there any ayurvedic alternatives to epidurals or other pain relievers during delivery that you would recommend? # 8 (29:34:29) Many women have to return to work just four to six weeks after giving birth. What advice do you have for them as they continue to heal and revitalize their own bodies, care for a newborn, and return to a fast-paced working environment all at the same time?
DR. ROSY MANN # 9 (35:51:24) Finally, I wanted to take the conversation back to where we started, back to conception. And Iʼm curious if you could tell me what your top two or three tips would be for women who are hoping to conceive right now? # 1 0 (38:34:11) What ayurvedic practice or technique would you say has had the most impact on your health and well-being so far? # 1 1 (42:35:07) And what is your top ayurvedic tip for women, no matter what stage of life theyʼre in?
KATHRYN TEMPLETON # 1 (00;53) How does ayurveda understand menopause? # 2 (02;58) How do individuals with different constitutions experience menopause, as well as moving into the vata stage in life in general?
KATHRYN TEMPLETON # 3 (13;48;04) How does ayurveda propose that we treat these varying symptoms? # 4 (26;41;23) Can developing a dinacharya practice help promote positive psychological habits during menopause? # 5 (28;06;19) And what might an example of such a routine look like?
KATHRYN TEMPLETON # 6 (32;15;08) In your opinion, how does menopause tend to affect the important relationships in our lives? Iʼm thinking specifically about a womanʼs relationship with her body, her partner, and her relationship to things like money and career. # 7 (32;29;06) How do these relationships change, or even, do they typically change during perimenopause and menopause? # 8 (41;02;02) What would you say are the top three things we should keep in mind for approaching menopause?
KATHRYN TEMPLETON # 9 (44;50;05) So what have you found, whether in the context of menopause or just in general, has been one of the most useful ayurvedic practices or techniques for your own health and well-being? # 1 0 (46;11;15) And finally, what is your top ayurvedic recommendation for women?
DR. ROBERT SVOBODA # 1 (00;12;21) According to ayurveda, what does it mean to be healthy? # 2 (04;32;13) In your book Ayurveda for Women, you stress the importance of flow. Could you explain this concept and how it relates to womenʼs health?
DR. ROBERT SVOBODA # 3 (13;59;15) What commonly blocks flow? # 4 (19;28;21) Could you explain how womenʼs intrinsic creativity manifests, and what it is that commonly prevents this creativity from being expressed? # 5 (29;33;11) The road to health can be daunting with so much information available on the internet, much of it being contradictory. In your opinion, where should we begin on the path of seeking good health?
DR. ROBERT SVOBODA # 6 (38;56;09) What is the relationship between health and consciousness? # 7 (49;02;01) Speaking of dharma, we hear a lot in the yoga community about people following their dharma. And when people meet resistance on this path they might say Okay, thatʼs not my dharma and switch to something else. How do you know when itʼs just resistance you need to overcome or if something is clearly a sign that youʼre not in the flow intended for you?
DR. ROBERT SVOBODA # 8 (58;48;12) What is the purpose of taking a vow, and how can we begin to create meaningful vows? # 9 (01;05;47;29) How can ordinary aspects of our everyday lives like food, noises, and music be transformed into a part of a spiritual practice? # 1 0 (01;15;43;12) Can you tell us something about Vedic astrology?
DR. JAY APTE # 1 (00;50;29) Women can have challenging relationships with our bodies. How does ayurveda promote a healthy relationship with food and encourage us to embrace eating healthy, nutrient-dense meals? # 2 (11;10;02) What is ayurvedaʼs take on some of the current trend diets, such as paleo and gluten-free?
DR. JAY APTE # 3 (16;57;07) In the yoga and ayurveda world, eating meat is a controversial topic. What is your take on eating or not eating meat, and are the reasons given against eating meat typically spiritual or nutrition-based in nature? # 4 (22;47;24) Many people are so focused on what we eat that we overlook when and how weʼre eating as significant factors in our health and happiness. Could you explain how these other actions play a role in our optimal health?
DR. JAY APTE # 5 (31;19;12) As an ayurvedic practitioner, what are the most common reasons female patients seek out your services and treatments? # 6 (36;37;24) We hear a lot these days about turmeric and ginger. Whatʼs the deal? Are they appropriate for everyone? How much and how often? # 7 (41;18;29) Are there any other herbs or spices that women could benefit from including regularly in our diets?
DR. JAY APTE # 8 (43;50;18) Are there natural ways to relieve the symptoms of allergies? # 9 (51;46;08) Is there an ayurvedic practice or technique that you found to be especially potent or revolutionary in your own life? # 1 0 (58;40;11) And what is the number one ayurvedic tip or suggestion that you want to leave women with today?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 1 (00;21;08) According to ayurveda, what does it mean to be healthy? # 2 (02;15;29) With all the different styles of exercise available today yoga, crossfit, HIIT, SoulCycle, running, barre, all of these how can women in particular find a workout thatʼs best suited for their bodies?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 3 (13;28;13) And is there any correlation between different forms of exercise or sports and our body types or ayurvedic constitutions? # 4 (21;35;03) Does yoga have any cardiovascular benefits? If so, how does it compare to those of other sports, like running? # 5 (26;16;20) On your website, lifespa.com, you talk a lot about how readers can find an appropriate cleanse for their individual bodies. What advice would you give to women interested in cleansing or detoxing about how we can determine which method is best for us as individuals?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 6 (38;53;22) Many yoga practitioners are using fruit and vegetable juice as meal replacements (i.e., the juice cleanse ) as a way to cleanse and lose weight. Is this a good idea? # 7 (47;45;09) Speaking of calorie restriction, I wanted to ask you what you think about fasting? Is there room for it on a womanʼs road to better health, or are there negative side effects that outweigh any positives? Are there different fasting techniques that are better suited for, say, a vata body type, or a pitta or kapha?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 8 (53;08;24) Are there certain body types that thrive on a vegan diet? And alternatively, are there body types which would benefit from including dairy or animal protein in their diets? # 9 (01;01;24;13) Youʼve been mentioning a lot about sugar, so Iʼm excited to ask you this next question. We know that eating sugar in excess can be detrimental to our overall health, but knowing this can make us apprehensive to eat sugar in any form, including where it naturally occurs, such as in fruits. What tools can we use to help us gauge our sugar intake: knowing what kind, how much, and when to eat it?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 1 0 (01;10;39;02) In an effort to try to eat healthier and avoid excess sugar, a lot of us look for foods in the grocery store that appear to be healthy choices. And often we see the buzzwords skinny, thin, smart, etc. that would suggest they are healthy and guilt-free. Of course, this is marketing, but how can we tell the good from the bad? Are there specific ingredients we should stay away from or amounts of ingredients we should watch out for? # 1 1 (01;13;21;21) Because you mentioned Stevia, I wanted to ask: Are there any sugar alternatives that you would recommend, and in what amount?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 1 2 (01;15;28;18) And what about caffeine? Caffeine as an intake is a controversial topic as there is research supporting both the inclusion and exclusion of caffeine from our diets. What should we believe? # 1 3 (01;18;53;15) What effect do birth control pills oral contraceptives have on womenʼs digestive tracts and overall health?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 1 4 (01;22;32;13) From an ayurvedic perspective, are there any drawbacks to using methods of birth control that prevent menstruati on or, like in the case with some oral contraceptives, limit it to something like three times per year? Basically aside from the other risks that you mentioned, is there any other reason why we might not want to suppress the menstrual cycle? # 1 5 (01;24;20;01) In an article on your website you link problems during the menstrual cycle and menopause with dysregulated lymphatic flow and function. Could you explain this connection and some simple ways that women can improve lymphatic flow and reduce painful menstrual symptoms?
DR. JOHN DOUILLARD # 1 6 (01;28;38;07)) I personally noticed many of these symptoms went away when I started running regularly. Could that have something to do with moving the lymphatic fluid? # 1 7 (01;31;34;22) Do you have any final tips or a nugget of wisdom youʼd like to share with our viewers today?
