Executive summary Background Health Nutrition and Food Security for Marginalized Children and their Families (HN&FS) has started its journey in the year 2010 with the objective of enabling the marginalized school children and their families to have knowledge and practice related to health, nutrition and hygiene. The project vision is to develop a sustainable model to improve health, hygiene and nutrition behavior of marginalized students and their mothers keeping School Management Committee (SMC) in central role where they can ensure safe and clean environment as well as obtain health, nutrition and hygiene services through building capacity of the SMC and linkage with different available government and NGO services. There were some groups of mothers for each school and these groups attend one community session each month which is conducted by project hired paid volunteers, called Instructor. Now project has decided to phase out its activities periodically. But to make these activities sustainable the project has decided to identify and capacity building of some female volunteers who will conduct those mothers sessions. These volunteers are selected from the existing community mother groups and trained by the project and SMC. They agreed to perform their tasks voluntarily and eager to serve their local community without getting any financial benefits. So, the project initiated to conduct mother group meetings by community volunteers at those places where the project already phased out. The community volunteers are motivated to conduct these sessions willingly to improve knowledge of mothers of the students. A qualitative analysis was executed to find out the motivational factors that will help us to scale up this community volunteer model in future. Objective and methodology The main objectives of this study is to find out the motivational factors that influence the volunteers to conduct the sessions about health, hygiene and nutrition without getting any financial benefit. We have conducted total 14 in-depth interviews using semi-structured guideline during October- November, 2014. These interviews were performed in 5 sub-districts (Sariakandi, Sherpur, Shibganj, Sonatola and Gabtoli) of Bogra district. These collected data were then coded in a separate spreadsheet for analysis. Results More than 70% of volunteers mentioned that they took sessions at least once during July-October, 2014. More than 90% of volunteers are interested to continue the session in future. The volunteers mentioned that conducting sessions help them to increase their own skill, knowledge and experience and earn respect from the community people. They mentioned that these sessions play important role to build awareness about health, nutrition and hygiene among community people and it empowered them in the community. Recommendations Sessions need to conduct at regular basis. By conducting more and more sessions the volunteers can be more skilled and confident. The volunteers need more training to conduct the sessions properly or teacher/smc members can provide on the job training. Conclusion Volunteers are now earning respect and getting importance in their community. They are now building awareness of community people and taking active participation in decision making process. Thus voluntary activities can play important role to empower the local marginalized women. 4

Introduction Poor nutritional status is a key health problem in Bangladesh. Young children and women of reproductive age are especially vulnerable to nutritional deficits and micronutrient deficiencies. Inadequate or inappropriate feeding patterns lead to malnutrition. Numerous socioeconomic and cultural factors influence the nutritional status. 1 In this situation, Danone Japan and CARE Bangladesh jointly took decision to implement health, hygiene and nutritional activities at 5 sub-districts (Sherpur, Sariakandi, Shibganj, Gabtoli, Sonatola) of Bogra district of Bangladesh. Then a project named Health Nutrition and Food Security for Marginalized Children and their Families (HN&FS) started its journey in the year 2010. The objective of this project is to enable the marginalized school children and their families to have knowledge and practice related to health, nutrition and hygiene. The project vision is to develop a sustainable model to improve health, hygiene and nutrition behavior of marginalized students and their mothers keeping School Management Committee (SMC) in central role where they can ensure safe and clean environment as well as obtain health, nutrition and hygiene services through building capacity of the SMC and linkage with different available government and NGO services. For this purpose the project has trained 14 volunteers to conduct the sessions about health hygiene and nutrition in between January to March, 2014. The project had 40 instructors at 40 primary schools. These instructors took monthly two sessions for each class (Class III, IV and V). On the other hand, these instructors also conduct similar sessions with the mothers of the students. There were 4-5 groups of mothers for each school and these groups attend one community meeting each month. Now project has decided to phase out its activities periodically. But to make these activities sustainable the project has decided to build capacity of at least three female volunteers per school who will continue to conduct the sessions about health, hygiene, nutrition and food security. These volunteers are selected and trained by the project and SMC jointly and they agreed to perform their tasks voluntarily and eager to serve their local community. Till September, 2014 the project has transited its activities from 14 schools to female volunteers from Instructors. Here, in this report we have tried to find out the motivational factors that influence the volunteers to perform their voluntary activities without getting any financial benefits. 1 Bangladesh Demographic & Health Survey (BDHS), 2011 5

Formation, orientation and training of female volunteers HN&FS project would like to make the best use of the opportunities to engage the proactive mothers and train them so that they can conduct the mother group meetings on their own community. The proactive and suitable volunteers are selected from each mother groups and the criteria for selecting the mothers are: Self motivated and willingness to work without financial expectations At least class VIII pass for better understanding of the subject matters Less than 40 years of age for better mobility UP member/female SMC member of the school preferred. At first the instructors made a list of 15-20 women followed by the approval of school management for the formation of mother peer group. Then a daylong orientation was arranged to inform them about their roles and responsibilities. Orientation was held usually in a class room of a school. In this orientation the volunteers could know about the objectives and justification of their work. They could be aware about the potential achievement by performing voluntary services and the optimal uses of local resources. Representative from local government, head teacher and SMC president/member were present in this program. In that orientation 3 volunteers are selected by the school management committee who are more proactive and suitable for performing voluntary services. Structured guideline was used for training. Project officers demonstrate all sessions of mother group meetings to the selected female volunteers. Volunteers practiced the session in front of Project Officer. Other participants provided complement each other and the Project Officers helped them to conduct a good session by practicing repeatedly. They conducted mock sessions and project staffs guide them to improve their quality of lecture. It takes 5 days to complete mother volunteers training. The trainer also observed the real session conducting by the volunteers and provided necessary feedbacks. Objectives The main objectives of this qualitative analysis are: To find out the motivational factors those influence the volunteers to conduct the mothers sessions about health, hygiene and nutrition at community level. To identify the obstacles/challenges for which the volunteers could not conduct sessions. 6

Methodology We have conducted total 14 in-depth interviews from 14 volunteers on October- November, 2014 in the project 5 sub-districts (Sariakandi, Sherpur, Shibganj, Sonatola and Gabtoli) of Bogra district using a semi-structured guideline. The project officers conducted these indepth interviews. These collected data were then coded in a separate spreadsheet for analysis. This qualitative analysis report was prepared on the basis of these interviews, field notes and personal interactions with the volunteers. Findings The volunteers mentioned that conducting sessions help them to increase their own skill, knowledge and experience and earn respect from the community people. They mentioned that these sessions play important role to build awareness about health, nutrition and hygiene among community people and it empowered them in the community. Voluntary services increase the social acceptability among their local community. Most of the volunteers mentioned that they are very happy to perform the sessions and they have intention to continue these sessions in future. The major factors are illustrated below: 7

Obtaining respect from community people Volunteers mentioned that by conducting sessions in the community they are becoming popular in the community. Now people respect them and value their opinions. People are interested to follow their messages. People show honor to their words and volunteers can participate in decision making process both at household and community level. Thus they are empowered socially and it motivates them to perform the voluntary services. Now people respect me more than earlier and value my opinions Comment from a volunteer of Sherpur upazila, Bogra Building awareness among community people The volunteers think that by conducting session increased awareness of community people about health, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and homestead gardening. The volunteers are playing active role to increase the awareness among the people that gives them mental satisfaction. They think that they increased knowledge among their community and it motivate them to perform voluntary works. I wanted to conduct the session to inform the people about health, hygiene and nutrition and make them conscious about causes of different diseases Comment from a volunteer of Gabtoli upazila, Bogra Self development Through taking these sessions the volunteers are improving their knowledge level about health, hygiene and nutrition. They can develop their skill about homestead gardening and balanced diet with low cost. They also think that conducting sessions increased their personal experience which will help them in future career development as well as improved current practice. This also motivates them to perform the voluntary service. By conducting these sessions I can develop my knowledge and skill level and gather more experience Comment from a volunteer Gabtoli upazila, Bogra Reasons for not conducting sessions Less than 30% of planned sessions at community level were not conducted in time. Most of the volunteers mentioned that they had intention to take session but due to the following reasons they couldn t able to take those sessions: 8

Due to busy at personal tasks is a reason for which volunteers couldn t conduct sessions. As women have to be busy with many personal and household activities so they couldn t arrange mother group on time. Sometimes it s difficult to gather mothers at the same place at one scheduled time. The main factors that influence the volunteers to take the sessions in future without getting any financial benefits are: Skill and knowledge development The volunteers think that they will gain more knowledge and improve their skill through conducting these sessions in future. So they want to continue to conduct the sessions in future. 9

I want to increase my knowledge, skill and experience. Problem in distributing session tools: The volunteers have to collect session tools from school and sometimes the school authority doesn t supply the tools on time and volunteers can t collect those tools on time which creates problem conducting session properly. As school authority didn t supply the session tools so I conducted the session without those tools Comment from a volunteer Gabtoli upazila, Bogra Problem in using session tools: Sometimes it is difficult for the volunteers to identify the session tools during conducting sessions. As these tools are new to them so sometime it becomes difficult to select correct tool for the specific session. As there is no written identification sign in the back of the tools so sometime it is difficult to identify the tools during session Comment from a volunteer Gabtoli upazila, Bogra Recommendations Voluntary acts of volunteers can be more effective by following the below mentioned points: Need to conduct session regularly: By conducting sessions more and more the volunteers will be more skilled for conducting these sessions. Then they will be more used to for using the different session tools and it will be easier for the volunteers to continue the sessions in future. Besides those teachers and SMC members can attend the session to provide on job training to the volunteers. Concluding remarks Thus voluntary activities have remarkable impact to empower the rural women. These acts can be helpful for the volunteers to earn social respect and it also can play important role to build awareness about health, hygiene and nutrition among the local community especially the marginalized women. 11
