OVERVIEW PURPOSE SETTING Obesity is associated with many comorbid conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and osteoarthritis. The toll of obesity has mental, physical, social, and emotional impacts on individuals and families. It is a disease that many people struggle to overcome. Despite the growing number of individuals with obesity there continues to be a lack of support. Many turn to surgery as a last resort. Bariatric surgery is one tool used to treat morbid obesity, however, it is not a cure. Achieving and maintaining weight loss takes time and effort. Many individuals are ready to commit to this effort but find the absence of resources discouraging. As such we are running a pilot project in conjunction with the Richmond Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program. The project has partnered with local physician Dr. Keri Ruthe and personal trainer and clinical counsellor Jennifer Waller to create The Me Project. This is a medically supervised weight loss and lifestyle promotion program. The focus is on improved management and prevention of comorbid conditions associated with obesity. Through healthy eating habits, regular activity, stress management and behavioural changes you can overcome obesity. The Me Project recognizes that many people struggle with their weight and behind each person is a story. We have all faced barriers, obstacles and life events that have left us feeling stuck, frustrated, alone and often hopeless. We jump on fad diets and the promise that this time will be different; trying everything under the sun only to find once again it was unsuccessful or unsustainable, putting us back into the viscous cycle of failure, self doubt and feeling like it's pointless. This program was carefully created aiming to provide improved self integrity, personal growth, and a commitment to change in a fun, safe, open and friendly environment. Our goal is to safely facilitate changes in your lifestyle to move towards optimal health. By the end of the 12 weeks you should see improved self confidence, self belief and the ability to commit to a lifestyle change that is both achievable and maintainable. The Me Project will run over 12 weeks in a group environment, that will include; An initial 30 minute one-on-one assessment. Weekly goal setting and check ins. Bi weekly body composition testing and progress tracking. Evolving educational themes and physical movement components. 1.5 hours per week Small group setting & limited enrolment. Ongoing, online support through a private Facebook page. Classes held in a private studio, closed to the public. Participants must be committed to full 12 weeks. We look forward to working with you through your journey.
