WELCOME LETTER Dear Team Captain, Thank you for becoming part of an elite group of athletes who are Serving Hope by raising awareness and support of the American Cancer Society s mission. By competing in this fundraiser in the month of September, you are making an impact on a cause that touches us all. The American Cancer Society and United States Tennis Association-Missouri Valley are partnering to raise awareness and funds to help fight cancer as part of the Tennis on Campus Fall Invite. We are excited to support your efforts as a Serving Hope competitor. To get you started, we ve put together some fundraising best practices to ensure your Serving Hope campaign reaches its potential. These tips will help you promote your campaign, turn casual fans into excited supporters, and ultimately change and save lives. Thank you again for showing your commitment to this cause. Your efforts will help ensure that no one facing cancer walks alone. Sincerely, Ashley Berndt American Cancer Society Senior Manager, Community Development 816.218.7265 Ashley.berndt@cancer.org Scott Howes United States Tennis Association-Missouri Valley Tennis on Campus Program Manager 913-322-4821 howes@movalley.usta.com

WHAT S THE BEST WAY TO KICK OFF YOUR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN? 1. Make sure every member of your Tennis on Campus team knows they can participate in Serving Hope, even if they won t be Kansas City for the Fall Invite. 2. Make the first pledge yourself and with your team! 3. Recruit your next level of close contacts to pledge before you publicly announce your campaign. (No one likes to see a zero on the scoreboard). TALKING POINTS As you spread the word about your involvement as a Serving Hope competitor, here are some talking points to assist you with questions you may receive about your efforts. What does the American Cancer Society do to support the fight against cancer? Every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer through early detection and prevention, innovative cancer research, and patient support. They are currently funding more than $405 million in cancer research grants nationwide. They provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by cancer when and where they need it. Also, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their cancer risk or find it early when it s most treatable. What can I do to support your Serving Hope campaign? You can support my Serving Hope efforts by visiting [INSERT PERSONAL/TEAM PLEDGEIT LINK] to make a donation or by sharing one of my social media posts as I work to raise awareness and funds. Thanks in advance for your support. HOW SHOULD WE PROMOTE OUR CAMPAIGN? FORMER PLAYERS/ALUMNI: These can be your most loyal and competitive supporters as they are always seeking ways to re-engage with their program. Their desire to beat their rival schools will be your best asset in creating excitement! FAMILY: Don t forget about mom and dad, your siblings, your aunts and uncles, cousins, heck even long-lost relatives! EMAIL YOUR NETWORK: Email is a great way to reach a large audience of potential supporters. Be sure to include: o The link to your team s PLEDGE IT campaign page. o Direct ask for support you won t receive, if you don t ask! Support can be given by pledging or helping to share your message. o Personal message describing your campaign and why it s important to your team. SOCIAL MEDIA: Spread the word through social media with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn - it s the fastest way to reach a large audience!

FACULTY MEMBERS: Find these groups through your school s online directory. They are very proud of their school and do not like to lose. LOCAL BUSINESSES: Donations can come from local businesses in the community (or those from your home town). PERSONAL PLEDGE: Consider making a pledge of your own to support the ACS cause and increase your team s overall pledge amount. HOW CAN WE LEVERAGE THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE CHALLENGE? The competitive, head-to-head aspect of the Serving Hope challenge creates an opportunity for all involved. Engage rival teams via social media. Challenge rival schools by tagging them in your social media posts to enhance the competitive challenge. Fans will be inspired to beat your rivals on and off the court! Use your team s PLEDGE IT campaign page. Every team participating in the Serving Hope challenge will be featured on the PLEDGE IT campaign page. Link out to this URL whenever possible to update your followers on where your team stands compared to your competition: https://pledgeit.org/for/serving-hope SAMPLE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS FACEBOOK AND TWITTER: During the next 4 weeks, I m supporting the @AmericanCancerSociety and the @USTAMOValley Serving Hope campaign to help save lives from cancer! Social Media Best Practices: Keep followers and fans informed. Post messages about how much more is needed to reach your goals. Share stories and photos, and thank your donors. The more you can create buzz around the campaign the greater its impact. Instagram users include tags to @AmericanCancerSociety and your school (ex #University of Iowa) in Instagram posts. Instagram users include a direct link (or bitly link) to your PLEDGE IT campaign page in your Instagram bio. This is the only place to hyperlink a website on Instagram. Twitter users: Update your profile to include a direct link (or bitly link) to your PLEDGE IT campaign page. Thank your donors by posting a message on their wall so that their friends can see it. Hashtags: #ServingHope #TennisOnCampus #USTAMOValley #PlayMoValley #AmericanCancerSociety #Cancer

FUNDRAISING IDEAS Every dollar you raise helps the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer. Personal o Craft your personal story, stating why you are involved in this campaign and how their support would mean a lot to you. Friends, Family, Peers, and Professional Contacts o Send out emails or letters to friends and family, asking them to support your campaign with a donation. Social Media o As you share your pictures and information about the Serving Hope campaign, ask followers to make a donation to help you become the top fundraising candidate and support your mission to help save lives from cancer. o Be sure to provide updates on your fundraising progress through your social media networks, and always provide a link to your personal fundraising website. Sample Fundraising Letter Dear [INSERT NAME], No one should have to face a cancer diagnosis alone. This is why I have joined the USTA and the American Cancer Society in support of their lifesaving work by participating in the Serving Hope campaign during our Tennis On Campus Fall Invite, September 29. As an athlete, I am committed to raising awareness and funds to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer. This cause is one I personally believe in. [SHARE PERSONAL CONNECTION TO CANCER.] The more people who support this effort, the bigger our impact will be in helping to save lives from cancer. This is why I m asking those close to me to consider making a donation by September 30 to support my efforts through the fundraising website: [INSERT LINK]. Because of my efforts and those of others who support this important cause, the American Cancer Society is able to conduct innovative research, educate people on how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early, and simply provide a hand to hold. Your donation could help someone who is currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis, those who may face a future diagnosis, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education and prevention. Thank you in advance for your support. Every serve counts. Every life counts. - [INSERT YOUR NAME]

WHAT SHOULD WE DO AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE CAMPAIGN? The single most important thing you can do is to thank your supporters. Send a personal email or handwritten note to your supporters thanking them for their contribution. Someone who pledges to your campaign believes in what your team is doing. Spend an extra minute to write a personal message about how their donation has made a difference. TENNIS ON CAMPUS PLEDGE IT Campaign Page **Coming Soon!** Each team will have a PLEDGE IT campaign page set up for them that is used to get pledges for Serving Hope. You just send your link to your PLEDGE IT campaign page to whomever you re seeking a donation from and let the funds roll in! Your team s PLEDGE IT campaign page will be provided in early September. If you have questions, please email Ashley.Berndt@cancer.org or howes@movalley.usta.com.
