Letter From The President Littleton Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association Newsletter 2nd Quarter, 2012 Issue #43 Dear Members, The biggest LPCAAA news in the past quarter is the recently completed Alumni Refresher Course hosted by the Littleton Police Department. More than 50 graduates of prior Citizen s Academies, representing a span of 14 years, attended the series of four sessions highlighting the latest tools, training and technology in use by the LPD to combat crime in our community. A much anticipated part of the Refresher Course was a visit by Chief Coogan to provide details on a list of new volunteer programs sponsored by the LPD and available to the Alumni. A list of the new programs will be available on the website soon with instructions on signing up. Guest speakers during the past several meetings include Mark Bell and Fred Joseph from the Banking and Securities Commission of Colorado, and Special Agent Derek Booth from the United States Secret Service. Both programs presented captivating information and remarkable insights into their respective department s operations. Mickey Kempf, our Director of Training, has been very successful in scheduling our training segments and we can expect several exciting field trips during the warm weather months. Members are reminded that volunteer hours accumulated during the calendar year are rewarded with service pins at our annual picnic date, time and place to be determined. Hours are earned by assisting at a variety of LPD and community events, and include hours of attendance at monthly member meetings. Service milestones are recognized at 25-hours, 50-hours, 100-hours, 250-hours and beyond. Please visit our website at www.lpcaaa.org to preview the schedule of upcoming activities and events. Hope to see you at our next meeting! Joe Hanson president@lpcaaa.org www.lpcaaa.org

The Chief s Corner By Heather A. Coogan, Chief of Police Dear Alumni, The police department completed a very successful first of its kind refresher course for our Littleton Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association. The training provided offered a real- world and current glimpse into the many uses of police technology and how we use and apply it to make our jobs easier. Over the course of four weeks, we were pleased to welcome over fifty of our Alumni to join us in our new training facility to take part in presentations from personnel from our two divisions, covering a wide range of topics. The participants were able to enjoy presentations on the use of technology in accident reconstruction, criminal investigations, SWAT technology, patrol operations and property and evidence. We also introduced a new endeavor to expand our Volunteers in Policing program by offering a wide range of additional, valuable duties such as handicapped parking violations, open garage doors and puffer patrol, fingerprinting and continuing with pawn entry just to name a few. We are pleased to have volunteers, many with long standing Department ties, willing to help as we look for ways to extend our resources while still maintaining consistent levels of great service to our citizens. We expect to get it rolled out in July. Finally, I want to thank each of you, our Citizen Academy Alumni, for believing in us and sacrificing your time and unlimited energies toward making the relationship between police and citizens a strong one. Your contributions do not go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chief Coogan Chief of Police Heather A. Coogan
