NIDAC18 - THE 5TH NATIONAL INDIGENOUS DRUG & ALCOHOL CONFERENCE - Overview OVERVIEW ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The 5th National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conference (NIDAC18) will be held from 6 9 November 2018 in Adelaide, South Australia. This Conference will consist of a three-day event to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 7 9 November as well as a pre-conference workshop at the Stamford Plaza Adelaide on 6 November. The theme of this Conference, Responding to Complexity, acknowledges the range of issues including chronic health problems; injuries from assaults; homelessness; criminal offences and incarceration; and social disruptions including family and cultural breakdown that accompany harmful alcohol and other drug use. Mental health issues are a common comorbidity and, along with the continually challenging nature of alcohol and drugs and their use, means that people presenting to alcohol and drug services typically have complex, multiple needs. Accordingly, for services to effectively respond to this complexity and restore the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a variety of interventions and supports are required. The Conference event seeks to explore the complexity and the interventions and supports required to address harmful alcohol and drug use. ABOUT THE ABORIGINAL DRUG & ALCOHOL COUNCIL SA, HOSTS FOR THE 5 TH NATIONAL INDIGENOUS DRUG & ALCOHOL CONFERENCE The Aboriginal Drug & Alcohol Council (SA) Aboriginal Corporation (ADAC) is proud to host the 5th National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conference. ADAC was initially incorporated in 1993 as the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council (SA) (ADAC) following the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC). In South Australia the Aboriginal community from across the state met a number of times to discuss the Findings of the Royal Commission. It was agreed that as the majority of deaths had a drug and or alcohol related component and considering that over 80 of the Recommendations were substance misuse related, that a community controlled response was needed. After considerable discussion it was decided that one way to address the issues was to create a state wide peak substance misuse organisation. ADAC has since incorporated under ORIC and is now named the Aboriginal Drug & Alcohol Council (SA) Aboriginal Corporation (ADAC). ADAC now provides a range of drug and alcohol services, include treatment related services.
