WHAT IS NATIONAL WEEK OF DEAF PEOPLE The Natinal Week f Deaf Peple (NWDP) is a week-lng natinal celebratin f Deaf individuals and the Deaf Australian cmmunity. It is an pprtunity fr Deaf peple t: Celebrate their cmmunity, language, culture and histry Make the public aware f their lcal, state and natinal Deaf cmmunities Recgnise their achievements It is als an pprtunity fr rganisatins invlved with, r wishing t be invlved with the Deaf Cmmunity t: Shwcase their services and/r prducts Build/maintain relatinships with Deaf Peple Be recgnised fr giving Deaf peple a fair g TYPE OF EVENTS USUALLY ORGANISED DURING THE NWDP The types f events that Deaf Australia encurages includes but are nt restricted t: Deaf Festival Day/Exp Infrmatin disseminatin (pamphlets, psters, bklets etc) Wrkshps/Frums Deaf Cmedy/Quiz/Theatre/Debate Nights Film nights Open days And s n NWDP THEME FOR 2013 Deaf Australia has chsen the same theme as the Wrld Federatin f the Deaf Internatinal Week f Deaf Peple fr 2013: Equality fr Deaf Peple We encurage yu t use the NWDP theme when cnsidering yur event fr NWDP. Hwever, it is nt strictly enfrced and we wuld like t see as many events as pssible partaking in the NWDP and persnal achievements recgnised this year. BRIEF HISTORY OF NATIONAL WEEK OF DEAF PEOPLE The Internatinal Week f Deaf Peple (IWDP) an Internatinal Day f Deaf Peple (IDDP) are an initiative f the Wrld Federatin f the Deaf (WFD). These tw events are traditinally held during September and are based n the funding dates f the WFD. The WFD has advised that member cuntries are nt bund t fllw the dates set fr IWDP and IDDP, but are instead free t set their wn dates fr natinal prgrams. Deaf Australia is the Australian rdinary member f the WFD. Unfrtunately, due t ther significant natinal events already scheduled, we are unable t hld the Natinal Week f Deaf Peple (NWDP) and the Natinal Day f Deaf Peple (NDDP) in September t cincide with ther internatinal celebratins. Deaf Australia therefre hlds NWDP each year beginning n the third Saturday f Octber and ending the fllwing Friday. NDDP is traditinally held each year n the third Sunday f Octber, This year the relevant dates will be frm the 19 th t 25 th Octber 2013 fr the NWDP celebratin and the 20 th Octber fr the NDDP. TO REGISTER YOUR EVENT DURING NWDP WITH DEAF AUSTRALIA Why register my event? All state based r lcal events held during with NWDP are rganised in cllabratin with the Deaf Australia state branches. All events need t be registered with Deaf Australia t be part f the fficial NWDP prgram. This gives yur event fficial recgnitin and helps Deaf Australia t prmte the prgram in mre detail. As all events need t meet certain criteria in rder t be part f the NWDP, it is essential that events are registered. What yu need t d t register We request that all participating rganisatins: 1. Read the terms f reference 2. Cmplete the event registratin frms and attach flyers if yu have made flyers 3. Send yur event registratin frms and flyers t the Deaf Australia State member rganisatin in yur state (see Appendix B). All cmpleted frms must be received by yur state branch by Friday, 13 th September, 2013 in rder fr them t arrive at Deaf Australia by the cutff date i.e., clse f business Friday, 27 th September 2013. 4. Yur state member rganisatin will send the frms t Gaye Lyns at Deaf Australia. 5. NT, ACT & Tasmanian rganisatins can send their frms directly t Deaf Australia, t gaye.lyns@deafau.rg.au 6. All cmpleted frms must be received by Deaf Australia by clse f business n Friday, 27 th September 2013. N entries will be accepted after that time. Prmtin f events during NWDP All registered events that are happening as part f NWDP must have the Deaf Australia NWDP lg n ALL printed and visual material. This includes pamphlets, flyers, pster, DVDs, etc. Verbal prmtins (fr example, fr radi r televisin) must include a statement that makes it clear NWDP is Deaf Australia s natinal week, fr example: As part f the Deaf Australia s Natinal Week f Deaf peple 2013, we have great pleasure in A written transcript f what is planned t be said is required t be submitted with the registratin frm. Event page n DEAF AUSTRALIA Website All events will be listed n ur website as sn as registratin frms are received and apprved by Deaf Australia frm the state branches. It is yur respnsibility t prvide us with accurate infrmatin. All participating rganisatins are respnsible fr making sure that they cmplete their Event Registratin Frm and have it sent directly t yur state branch by 13 th September 2013. Alng with a cmpleted Event Registratin Frm, we further require either a Wrd/PDF cpy f the flyer created fr the event (if a flyer has been created). APPENDIX A Terms f Reference please read befre entering yur event 1. Natinal Week f Deaf Peple (NWDP) is held each year beginning n the third Saturday f Octber and ending the fllwing Friday (in 2013 it is 19 th Octber t 25 th Octber) 2. Natinal Day f Deaf Peple (NDDP) is held n the third Sunday f Octber. (In 2013 it is 20 th Octber) 3. NWDP and NDDP are based n the Internatinal Week f Deaf Peple (IWDP) and Internatinal Day f Deaf Peple (IDDP), which are held in September at a time that des nt suit the Australian calendar. 4. The IWDP and IDDP are the initiative f the Wrld Federatin f the Deaf (WFD). The WFD has advised that member cuntries are nt bund t fllw the dates set fr IWDP and IDDP; instead they are free t set their wn dates fr natinal prgrams. 5. The Australian member f WFD is Deaf Australia and as such, in Australia NWDP and NDDP is Deaf Australia initiatives. 6. In each Australian state, NWDP and NDDP are c-rdinated by the state branches f Deaf Australia, in accrdance with these Terms f Reference. 7. Other rganisatins invlved with the Deaf Cmmunity are welcme t take part in NWDP and NDDP activities by wrking with their state branch f Deaf Australia and registering their event n the Deaf Australia Official NWDP prgram. 8. The purpse f NWDP and NDDP is t celebrate Deaf peple s language, culture and cmmunity and t prmte their interests. 9. Activities which are regarded as apprpriate fr the week include thse that: Highlight the skills, abilities and achievements f Deaf peple in a psitive way. Enable Deaf peple t be active in vicing their rights and cncerns as citizens. Prmte cmmunity awareness f barriers cnfrnting Deaf Peple in their everyday life, and encurage and acknwledge psitive slutins t thse barriers. Encurage Deaf children and their families, Deaf adults, teachers, peple wh wrk with Deaf peple and ther interested peple t participate in and supprt the celebratin f Deaf cmmunity spirit and c-peratin. Prmte a better understanding in the wider cmmunity f the idea and uniqueness f the Deaf cmmunity, Australian Sign Language and Deaf culture. 10. NWDP and NDDP activities shuld be prmted as a whle, under the banner f Deaf Australia and the State branch f Deaf Australia. 11. NWDP and NDDP activities f ther (nn-deaf Australia) participating rganisatins shuld acknwledge the rle f Deaf Australia in NWDP and NDDP. Activities shuld nt be prmted separately r in a way that implies the week is the initiative f any rganisatin ther than Deaf Australia and its state branches. 12. The NWDP lg must be included n all printed and visual material. Printed/visual materials may include pamphlets, flyer, pster, DVDs, etc. Verbal prmtins must include a statement identifying the week as a Deaf Australia initiative. Radi and/r televisin prmtins must have a written transcript f what is planned t be said submitted with the registratin frms. transcripts fr verbal prmtins and evidence that the NWDP lg will be used n visual material are nt included with the registratin frm, the event will nt be accepted fr registratin and infrmatin abut it will nt be psted n the website. 13. A gd quality lg f the business registering fr an event fr NWDP must be attached t the registratin frm as either a clur.jpg file OR as an riginal letterhead which has a clur lg n it. Other frmats (e.g..gif r.tiff r.bmp) f the lg will nt be accepted. 14. Registratin received by Deaf Australia after clse f business n Friday 27 th September 2013 will NOT be accepted and will nt be psted n the website.
