DIABETES UPDATE and ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM March 17-19 2005 Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco, California The Diabetes Update section focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Diabetes 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Discussion will also include aspects of prevention of the disorders. Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism on Friday and Saturday, will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Clinical cases will focus on common endocrine problems encountered in clinical practice. This course is intended for general internists, family physicians, general practitioners, surgeons, nurses and other allied health professionals. The course is presented by the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine and is sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the completion of the Diabetes Update sessions, course participants should should be able to discuss: l The potentials for stem cell therapy; l Approaches to the prevention of type 1 and type 2 diabetes; l Incretins what are they and how can incretins be used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes; l An update on continuous blood glucose monitoring technology; l The clinical impact of the metabolic syndrome; l An update on treatments for obesity; l How to combine oral agents and insulins in the treatments of patients with type 2 diabetes; l PPAR agonists an update on their use in patients with type 2 diabetes. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the completion of the Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism sessions, course participants should be able to discuss: l Clinical studies on osteoporosis in men; l Evaluating and treating patients with osteoporosis; l Evaluating patients with calcium sensor mutations and how to use the currently available calcimimetic drug; l Growth hormone therapy in adults; l Use of ultrasound in the management of thyroid disorders; l MEN syndromes; l Management of commonly seen pituitary and adrenal disorders; l Evaluating and treating low HDL cholesterol syndromes; l Combination therapies for dyslipidemia; l Sex determination and differentiation. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physicians: UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.25 hours in category 1 credit toward the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity. AAFP: Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Determination of credit is pending. Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA category 1 credit issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. education requirements for license renewal.
