Rockn Roll Mother Goose A clownish, rockin version of the iconic matron, Mother Goose! Leading audiences on a storytelling adventure, she conjures up a tale that springs out of her magical imagination storybook. Each story is derived from an actual children s book, and the show is filled with audience participation, original music, and fantastic yet simple stagecraft. Rock n' Roll Mother Goose! tells stories of characters that think creatively- strong, boisterous, intelligent role models to which kids can relate- characters who aren t afraid to speak for themselves, take risks, think outside the box and rock their own worlds!
Judi Lewis Ockler, Creator Judi s careers as stunt performer, actor, fight director, clown, special event producer, mother and teacher all culminate with this project. Over the last twenty years, she has explored what matters most to her in her work as an artist. She loves being a fighter. She loves being a clown and a theater artist. There's something about the uniqueness of live theater that intrigues her- the special magic around a moment in time created between an audience and performer that never happens the same way again. History of the Show Years ago, Judi was given a children's book, "The Ballad of the Pirate Queens" by Jane Yolen, for research on a show she was creating. It's about the lives of two real life pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Reade, gorgeously illustrated by David Shannon. She wanted to bring these adventurous ladies to the stage and design it in a way that kids could identify with. This would eventually become the first story Rock n' Roll Mother Goose would ever tell. My desire is to inspire in children and families a desire to read literature, and to marvel in the wonder that only a live theater experience can give. And to have a rockin' awesome children's theater experience! - Judi Lewis Ockler In 2010, Judi started looking to create a character she could hang all her clown/stunt/theater work on. She was performing at an educational theater showcase and met an amazing singer/ songwriter named Brady Rymer. Brady gave her a couple of his albums, which quickly became a household favorite. As soon as I heard his song, Rock n' Roll Mother Goose", says Judi, "I said that's it! That's HER. She's everything Judi wanted her clown to be-- a magnetic crone who loves bringing kids stories-- but who's also super cool, spunky, magical and unpredictable. His music has truly inspired this show. In 2012, Judi was chatting with her good friends and producers Michael and Tina Bongar, who asked her a simple question: "So, when are you going to do that show you keep talking about?" To that end, Rock n Roll Mother Goose! was finally fully realized. After five years of workshops and showcases, she premiered the show at the Midtown International Theater Festival in NYC in 2015.
