NACC MDS Data Element Dictionary The data element dictionary is formatted the same as last year, due to favorable feedback. Variable names are indicated in Blue. You will find that changes in the Minimum Data Set have been highlighted in Red. Each variable has its own Green box. Each box includes the following information: Variable Number Indicates order of appearance on the MDS form. Variable Name For non-fixed format files, variable name must match exactly. Short Descriptor Used on the web page to indicate variable. MDS Question The question as it appears on the MDS Form. Length of Field For fixed field formats, number of columns for this variable. Column Positions For fixed field formats, column numbers for this variable. SAS Variable Type For non-fixed field formats, variable type as numerical or character. SAS Variable Length For non-fixed field formats, variable length. Allowable Codes and s List of codes with mapping instructions. Skips and Blanks Instructions for skip patterns. s Other instructions as needed. If the last MMSE was derived from another test, please consult NACC before coding. Variable Number 17 Variable Name CLINDEM Short Descriptor Clinical Dementia MDS Question Did the subject meet clinical criteria for dementia (e.g. DSM IV or other) at the most recent evaluation for dementia? Column Positions 88 includes questionable dementia or diagnosis not completed Skips If CLINDEM = 1 then go to #18, AGEDEM. If CLINDEM = 2 then continue. All subjects who do not meet clinical criteria for dementia should be indicated by a 2. Use #17a, NOTDEMCI to further describe these subjects. Column Positions 90 Allowable Codes 1 6 1 = Not demented control subject, no neurological disorder t demented, but has other neurological disorder (such as Parkinson s, MS, etc.) 3 = Questionable dementia (e.g. CDR = 0.5) or cognitive impairment (MCI, AAMI) 4 = Down Syndrome but not demented 5 = Other 6 = No diagnosis made 9 = Missing/Unknown Blanks Blank if #17, CLINDEM = 1 Skips Go to #22a, STROKE. (Contingency check for combination of MMSE <17 and CLINDEM = 2 has been removed.) Variable Number 18 Variable Name AGEDEM Short Descriptor Age Dementia MDS Question At what age did the subject develop dementia symptoms? Length of Field 3 Column Positions 92 94 Allowable Codes 0 130 999 Blanks Blank if #17, CLINDEM = 2 Alerts Unlikely if < 39 or > 102 Refers to age of onset of dementia symptoms, not age at which diagnosis was made. Age at most recent evaluation must be greater than or equal to age subject developed dementia. For assistance mapping categorical data, please contact NACC. This data must be INTEGER only.
