CKI FACTS What is Circle K International? CKI is a service, leadership development, and friendship organization, organized and sponsored by a Kiwanis club on a college or university campus. It is a self-governing organization and elects its own officers, conducts its own meetings, determines its own service activities, and establishes its own dues structure. CKI is the largest service organization of its kind. It offers numerous opportunities for service learning and character education programming. TENETS Service. Leadership. Fellowship. Service Service is the heart of CKI. Collectively, CKI members perform more than 1 million hours of service on their campuses and in their communities every year. Without service, CKI would be just another campus activity. Through service, college students are making the world a better place. Leadership The potential of CKI lies in its ability to positively influence members of society who are facing ultimate personal decisions and those who will one day create the vision of humankind for generations to come. Leadership opportunities afford CKI members the resources and tools needed to become active citizens. Members can assume leadership responsibilities at all levels of the organization and through various experiential training conferences. Fellowship CKI members experience fellowship and develop lifelong relationships with fellow collegians, advisors, Kiwanians, and citizens in their communities every single day. Whether a member is mentoring a child, networking with a businessman, or bowling with members, he or she is developing social skills, meeting new people, and strengthening relationships. OBJECTS The objects of this organization shall be: To emphasize the advantages of the democratic way of life; To provide the opportunity for leadership training in service; To serve on the campus and in the community; To cooperate with the administrative officers of the educational institutions of which the clubs are a part; To encourage participation in group activities; To promote good fellowship and high scholarship; To develop aggressive citizenship and the spirit of service for improvement of all human relationships; To afford useful training in the social graces and personality development; and To encourage and promote the following ideals: o To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life; o To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; o To promote the adoption and the application of high social, business and professional standards; o To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship; o To provide through Circle K clubs a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities; and o To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism, which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill. CKI HISTORY 1936 The concept of Circle K was presented at the collegiate level at Washington State University 1947 First Circle K Club chartered at Carthage College, Illinois. 1949 Circle K becomes an international organization with the chartering of a club at the University of Western Ontario 1953 Kenneth B. Creasy of Ohio Wesleyan University is elected as International President of CKI. 1955 CKI Constitution and Bylaws adopted. 1971 Women are welcomes into CKI. 1957 Texas-Oklahoma becomes the first district of CKI. 1975 1984 Susan E. McClernon was the first woman elected as International President. 2005 Gregory Faulkner was the first AfricanAmerican elected as International President. 1999 CKI leadership dedicates 1999 as the Year of Service. th CKI marks it 50 anniversary. KIWANIS FAMILY Think of the Kiwanis Family as a tree. Kiwanis is our parent organization, making up the trunk of the tree and the base of the organization. From the tree trunk there are branches and each branch represents a service leadership program, K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K, and Aktion Club. K-Kids K-Kids is the international student-led organization for elementary school students focused on community service. Builders Club Builders Club is the middle school/junior high branch of Kiwanis with a focus on building leaders while serving their community. Key Club Key Club is the international student-led organization for high school students with core values of leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness. Circle K That s us. Aktion Club Aktion Club is the Kiwanis branch for adults with disabilities that help serve the community. Kiwanis Kiwanis is the umbrella organization for the above branches. Kiwanis main focus is serving the children of the world.

Campus & Community Service As a member of CKI you will share in the tradition of serving your campus and community. CKI members plan and participate in a variety of service projects making long-lasting and far-reaching impacts in their communities. Leadership Development Joining CKI makes you stand out as a leader who plans to make a difference in the world. Through the CKI structure, every member has the opportunity to develop leadership skills by serving as an officer or committee chairperson on the club, District, or International levels. Professional Development Involvement in CKI opens many doors for college students. The skills that are developed and the opportunities experienced through CKI increase a student's marketability for employment after college. CKI's connection to Kiwanis promotes career networking between collegians and professionals as well, which also may lead to internships and other opportunities. Friendship Circle K is on more than 500 college and university campuses around the world. Due to that members of CKI have the unique opportunity to become friends with college students from all walks of life. Attendance at divisional, district, and International conferences and conventions provides members a special chance to learn about diverse perspectives, make new friends, share ideas and concerns, and travel. INTERNATIONAL Circle K is an International Organization and we currently have clubs in 12 nations. Since we are an international organization we have several different tiers. Member Club Division District Subregion International As an International organization Circle K provides many opportunities for members to serve in leadership roles. As it stands, there are three different levels that a member can serve on club, district, and international.
CLUB LEADERSHIP A club board is typically comprised of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Bulletin Editor. However, some clubs offer multiple Vice President position for Vice President of Service, Vice President of Membership, and so on. Some clubs may also combine the Secretary and Treasurer positions. Club President Chief Executive Officer Presides at all club and board meetings Provide direction and support to club and club officers Represents the club at District, Division, and International events Communicate club progress to sponsoring Kiwanis Club Club Vice President Oversee Committees Serve as an ex-officio member on all committees Report on Committee progress In the absence of the President the Vice President will assume all Presidential duties Performs responsibilities as assigned by the President Secretary Manages club records club membership, meeting attendance, meeting minutes, etc. Send out minutes for club and board meetings Complete and submit monthly reports as required by the District and International Club Treasurer Collects and records member dues including District and International dues Prepare a club budget and maintain financial records Deposit and disburse club funds as necessary Club Editor Develop a publication/newsletter for club members with information about service projects, socials, and District or International events and initiatives Manage the clubs social media accounts Club Committees Clubs can have a variety of committees including but not limited to fundraising, social, historian, etc. Clubs should form committees based on the needs and goals of their clubs. ***For more information on leadership positions and responsibilities please see the Club Leadership Guide.
DISTRICT LEADERSHIP A District board is typically comprised of a Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, and Lieutenant Governors. However, some Districts may combine the Secretary and Treasurer positions and use a Council of Presidents in place of Lieutenant Governors. District Governor Chief Executive Officer Perform all duties as outlined in the International and District Bylaws Presides at all board meetings Provide direction and support to clubs and District officers Communicates District progress to Kiwanis and Circle K International Attends Governor and Administrator Training Conference Represents the District at International events District Secretary Takes and distributes board meeting and House of Delegates minutes Completes and submits monthly reports as required In the absence of the Governor the Secretary will assume all Governor duties District Treasurer Prepare a District budget and maintain financial records with Kiwanis approval Sure that clubs pay their dues by sending reminders Educate members about dues District Editor Develop a publication for the District club with information about service initiatives, District events, leadership development, and International events and initiatives Manage the clubs social media accounts District Committees Districts can have a variety of committees including but not limited to convention, laws and regulations, technology, Kiwanis Family, etc. Districts should form committees based on the needs and goals of their District. ***For more information on leadership positions and responsibilities please see the District Leadership Guide.
INTERNATIONAL BOARD The International Board is comprised of the International President, International Vice President, Trustee-at-Large, Trustees A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The Circle K Director, Specialist, and Board Councilor also serve as advisors to the International Board. International President Chief Executive Officer Serves as the official representative of Circle K International Advocates for Circle K International to Kiwanis and other organizations Will offer general supervision over Circle K International Will provide direction and support to Circle K International Provides support to Governors and answers questions as needed Oversees I-Board and offers aid and support to Trustees Chairs the Executive Committee Maintains communications and connections with the branches of the Kiwanis Family International Vice President Serves as an official representative of Circle K International Oversees International Committees Records minutes at all official meetings Distributes the International Board Book and other pertinent information Maintains correspondences Publishes weekly Vice President newsletter Secondary counselor to District Secretaries & Treasurers Performs responsibilities as assigned by the President International Trustee Maintains communication with the Governors in their Subregion Serves as a source of information for their Subregion Maintains correspondence and distributes information Represent their Subregions and Governors interests at Board Meetings Provide resources and materials as necessary Develops an inter-district relationship between the Governors in their Subregion Serves on an International Committee or acts as liaison Perform responsibilities as assigned by the President All International Board Members Visit Districts to perform various functions (speeches, training, workshops, etc.) Works with the CKI Director and Specialist, Kiwanis Counselor, and various Kiwanis Staff Provide support to Districts, clubs, and members as needed or requested
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEES There are different types of committees that you can join at the International level: Standing Committees are regular recurring committees. Standing Committees include the Service Committee, Kiwanis Family Relations Committee, the Membership and Marketing Committee, and Executive Committee. Standing Subcommittees are regular recurring committees that are a part of the standing committees. Standing subcommittees include the Large Scale Service Project Committee & International Expansion Committee. Ad-Hoc Committees are committees created to address a particular task dependent upon the year. Past ad-hoc committees have included the Alumni Relations, Analytics, Chartering & Club Building, and Governing Documents Committees. Task Forces are small committees that have one specific task to complete and are dependent upon the year. Task Forces normally meet their objective before the year is complete. Past Task Forces have included the Awards, Translation, and Technology Task Forces.
SERVICE PARTNERS and PREFERRED CHARITIES Better World Books is an online reseller of used books. Every time you purchase books from their website, they donate a book to someone in need. You can work with Better World Books by hosting a book drive. Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) STUFH is a national non-profit organization with the mission to gather food on college campuses. You can fight hunger by working with your local food bank or at an on campus food bank. You can also have a CANraiser or CANtribute. March of Dimes is an organization that focuses on raising awareness for prematurity and reducing the rates of premature births. Many Circle K s participate in Prematurity Awareness Month in November and the annual March for Babies which happens in late April, but you can fundraise year around. The Kiwanis Family, in partnership with UNICEF, is working to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from the face of the earth. We plan on raising $110 million dollars in order to provide vaccinations to save mothers and their future babies.
CKIx INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CKIx Large Scale Service Project LSSP is a full and fun day of Service in our host city. You will be split into teams with the opportunity of meeting Circle Ker s from all over! With your team you will be participating in a variety of service projects everything from cleanups to playground builds to Food Banks. LSSP is all about forging new friendships and making a difference in the community! International Convention International Convention is a combination of informational workshops, inspirational speakers, and the House of Delegates, which includes the discussion of amendments and the election of our International Board. International Convention is all about learning valuable information you can bring back to your home club and preparing for the next Circle K year. So, why should you attend CKIx? It is the biggest CKI event of the year! Meet Circle Ker s from all over International Exemplify all three tenets of CKI: Service, Leadership, & Fellowship Celebrate all your accomplishments and hard work throughout the year. Listen to the amazing speakers and learn new information through workshops Elect the International Board It will be a fun event where you can make many fun memories & long lasting friendships.
LEADERSHIP ACADEMY What is Leadership Academy? Glossary Leadership Academy is a six-day event that focuses on leadership and being a servant leader. This program takes members of CKI through an adventure starting with the CKI amazing race and ending with a plan in a place to serve. Leadership academy is a unique experience that expands your boundaries, allows you learn more about yourself, and gives you the opportunity make life long friendships. Why should I attend Leadership Academy? You should attend Leadership Academy because it is an amazing opportunity for you to learn more about Circle K and to develop your skills as a leader. There are many things you can take away from attending this six-day event and I highly recommend you all take this opportunity Who can attend? Are you a member of CKI? Then YOU can attend! When, Where, & Cost Leadership Academy takes place in Morgantown, Indiana at the end of July. The Kiwanis Foundation covers the majority of the program. However, there is a registration fee and you will need purchase your flight to Indianapolis. Some districts may offer scholarships to subsidize this cost. Where do I apply?
