Campos 1 Karla Campos Camille Pack English 2010 Word Count 1344 March 23, 2015 Review on What Drugs do in your body The documentary What drugs, do in your body is really good it explain the different effects that are caused by the use of drugs. In the documentary are four different drug users are put into action on different tasks to see how they perform before and after using drugs. These tasks are things that could be done any day in real life. On the video it tells that 26 millions Americans are consuming illegal drugs, that is 100,000 lb. of cocaine, 4,000lb. of meth and 700tons of marijuana. Figure1
Campos 2 The first task that they need to do is to test their coordination. First is a marijuana user, when he uses marijuana the smokes feels his lungs and it only takes 60 seconds to get to his brain and within 5 minutes he feels the drug effects. On these tasks they are driving a course and doing a parallel parking. He gets to do the driving course without drugs and he was able to do it just fine, after he uses marijuana and gets to do the exact same course. When he starts, he had already forgotten hoe the course begins. While he was doing the course, there were a couple of things that you could notice, first he does not exceed 7 mph but he was able to complete the course. On the parallel parking before smoking it takes him just over a minute to complete, after smoking it took him over three minutes. The use of marijuana slows James down on his tasks. The next person is a meth user, meth accelerates many of the body systems. He was able to do good before using meth, after the use of meth his top speed was 25% faster than his speed before drugs and nearly 4 times as fast as the marijuana user. On his parallel parking he hit a cone, but he was able to do it. Meth stimulates the center nervous system and keeps the meth user focus but almost excessive focus. Next up was a heroin user, heroin gets to the brain and its converted to morphine. Heroin user was able to complete the course fine without drugs, but after she used the drugs she was driving steady until the end where she almost hit the stop sign, on parallel parking it took her twice as long than when she was sober.
Campos 3 The next one was a cocaine user, like meth, cocaine is a strong stimulant that make your heart beat harder and your movements faster and it also increased the desire to move fast. For the cocaine user his top speed is 29 mph, he is faster than the other 3 drug users. He was able to complete the course but was not able to stop at the end and he hit the stop sign. The use of cocaines makes all his systems go fast, but it also makes it difficult to stop. On parallel parking he goes 30% faster than without drugs. Marijuana and heroin slow down reactions and cause confusion and inattention, cocaine and meth over excite both brain and body causing them to drive fast and carelessly. Little errors that can create big problems on the streets and highways. Imagine all the drug users out there in real life and the things that they do and how it could affect other people around them. By putting this drug user behind the wheel they were able to get a good measure of how drug affects their coordination. The next tasks they ask drug users to perform was to build a bookcase, they had 20 minutes to do it. This time around they only did it after using drugs. The marijuana user has a lot of trouble focusing because the TCH on his brain did not recall the instructions and did not let him concentrate, he was unmotivated to do it so he was not able to complete the task. The meth user, like many other meth users rushes to activity and after 10 minutes his body is overheating, with meth you could burn calories by just sitting still, you could lose as much as a 15 min workout. After the time was up, he said that every second was an agony and if he was not on meth he would not have done it, meth power him to finish the task but also cook him from the inside. The cocaine user finishes before time is up, but he looks frustrated and the book case it is not set up correctly. He avoids every single detail of it, cocaine make him feel above such tasks,
Campos 3 he feels c grandiose. The Heroin User finishes the book case on time and perfect, she uses heroin 3 to 4 times a day. She could not have done it without it, she cannot function without them. Heroin its in control of her entire life. Figure 3 Your body on meth has a higher heart rate and has no strength increase, methamphetamine has a number of other short-term effects and even a single high dose of the drug has been shown to damage nerve terminals in the dopamine-containing regions of the brain. Meth also effectively shuts down your brain's sleep, hunger, and thirst centers. (Sanello: 31) Dehydration, in addition to increased respiration and elevated body temperatures (sometimes to lethal levels) may also result. Other side effects can include irritability, confusion, nervousness, nonstop talking, tremors, convulsions, anxiety, paranoia, and aggressiveness. (Sanello: 38). Cocaine causes a short-lived, intense high that is immediately followed by the opposite intense depression, edginess and a craving for more of the drug. People who use it often don t eat or sleep properly. They can experience greatly increased heart rate, muscle spasms and convulsions.
Campos 5 The drug can make people feel paranoid,1 angry, hostile and anxious even when they aren t high. Cocaine can give you strength, but also a heart attack due to the high heart rate increase. With heroin, the rush is usually accompanied by a warm flushing of the skin, dry mouth, and a heavy feeling in the extremities, which may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and severe itching. The effects of marijuana include disrupted learning and memory, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, distorted perception (sights, sounds, time, touch), loss of motor coordination, increased heart rate, and anxiety. Here are some things that you can do to not use drugs. Compare the results, long term and short term, of your new lifestyle. If you were taking drugs, the results would never be as good. Realize that enjoying life and pursuing new interests is more satisfying and EASIER (long term anyway) than abusing drugs. Remember that the future is full of promise and abusing drugs might rob you of those beautiful things in life. Look at the list of people who have been destroyed, even killed, by drugs. Just because many Rock Stars, actors or friends use them doesn't make them cool; you must make your own decisions. For every star who looks cool taking drugs, there is one who is in rehab, or has died.
Campos 6 Now that you that you know some of the short term effects on some of the common drugs and some great tips no to use them, you can now choose not to use drugs because they can change your life forever. Think about what other things in life you can achieve such as activities that are more fulfilling than drugs. Don't let that happen to you, if you are offered drugs make sure that you alert the appropriate person about the encounter.
