With our Fall Ordeal completed we will soon be moving into 2010. We will start off the year with our wonderful Winter Banquet on Sunday, January 10, 2010. We will have great food, fun, awards, and fellowship. Next year will be great with all the exciting new events planned and we look forward to it. We are still looking for an Event Chairman to start planning and promoting our events well in advance. This is great training if you want to run for a Lodge Leadership Office in the future. Our 2010 calendar is very new and different next year. In addition to all our events we have two major council-wide events. In May there will be the Council-Wide Encampment at Bert Adams. There we will join many of our Brothers in the Atlanta Area Council to celebrate the centennial year of the BSA. We will have a ScoutFest in October at the Cobb Galleria Center as another celebration for 100 years. As you can see next year will be exciting and a fun filled year. We have invited our new Supreme Chief of Fire for Atlanta Area Council, Tracy Techau, and we hope to be able to meet him. Also, come to thank our retiring Lodge Adviser, Mr. Randy Yates, for his 5 years of leadership to our lodge. However, you can not forget the great food and good times which always accompany an Egwa Winter Banquet. Quiver Page 2 Patches! Brothers, take a look at the newest patch design for the 2010 World Jamboree seen right. It was pointed out that our original design did not fully match the current Jamboree Scout Patch designs that the Atlanta Area Council is using seen below. All the Jamboree Scout Patches have a small back area with a map of Georgia and a Fleur De Lis showing where Atlanta Area Council is located in Georgia. So, our OA Jamboree patch has changed slightly since our last LEC at the Allatoona Ordeal. It now has the outline of Georgia with the Fleur De Lis in its design so that it matches better with the Atlanta Area Council Jamboree participant patches. AAC 2010 whole sets of National Scout Jamboree patches (seen right) can be ordered by anyone. The order form can be found on our Lodge website. The deadline for ordering is February 1, 2010. In addition, if you have any ideas for designs for the Lodge 2010 patch set, send them to Lans Swofford at vcfinance@aacegwa.org. We need as many ideas and designs as possible so that we can have some more great patches for next year. You are strongly encouraged to send in a design by the January 10th LEC; you never know, your design might be picked. OA High Adventure How far can you go with the OA? What is the cheapest way to celebrate the great North American Wilderness? The answer to these questions is OA High Adventure. If you would like to go to Philmont, Northern Tier, or Sea Base with the OA for a fraction of the cost it would be with your troop, OA High Adventure is perfect for you. The 2010 applications for OA Trail Crew, OA Wilderness Voyage, and OAWV: Canadian Odyssey, have been posted to the Boy Scout High Adventure website, www.adventure.oa-bsa.org. There will be nine sessions of each program, including the new Canadian Odyssey Voyage, running from early June through mid-august. The OA Ocean Adventure program is currently being revised to give Arrowmen the opportunity to leave an even greater impact on the areas Sea Base serves. All of this, at a lower cost to the participants. Each year the OA's High Adventure programs continue to grow in popularity and have been filled to capacity for four straight years. As such, we encourage all Arrowmen to apply as soon as possible.
Quiver Page 3 AAC Campership Fund The Campership fund is a fund offered by Egwa Tawa Dee and Atlanta Area Council which helps Scouts attend summer camp. Most of these Scouts are from low-income single parent families, where they would not be able to attend summer camp without our help! For a donation of $35 or more to this fund you will receive one of our new Atlanta Campership Fund Council Patches seen above. For a Donation of $10 or more you will receive one of our special silver metallic Egwa Tawa Dee Campership Fund Lodge Flaps with "Campership Fund" ghosted into the design. All money raised goes straight to our Camperships Fund to help those scouts to be able to attend summer camp like the rest of us. Lodge Officer Reports Vice-Chief of Administration Brothers, I would like to thank the elangomats who helped at the Allatoona make up Ordeal and everyone else who helped with the event. I believed the Ordeal went extremely well. We always need help with the Ordeals, so if you would like to help at the Woodruff Ordeal as a elangomat, please let me know. Scott Conner Vice-Chief of Indian Affairs First of all, I d like to thank TQB, Achewon, and Cvmpe for performing the Pre-Ordeal and Ordeal ceremonies at the Allatoona Make-up Ordeal. I would also like to thank Cvmpe for performing the Brotherhood, and I congratulate the twelve Brothers who sealed their membership on Saturday night. It was also exciting to have the drum out; I hope we can continue to do that at our events. I hope that the experience I gained at this Ordeal can help me perform better at Woodruff in the spring. I am in the process of updating the Lodge s database of ceremonialists. I would like all Chapter Vice Chiefs of Ceremonies to contact me at vcindianaffairs@aacegwa in order to coordinate that effort. All chapter ceremonies teams planning on performing in the spring should begin practicing now in order to be ready. To accommodate the large amount of candidates, I need eight ceremonies teams performing at the Woodruff Ordeal, which means that if your chapter has been on the fence about performing, it s time to step up! At Allatoona, we had 76 candidates go through Ordeals and I am excited for our new brothers. This weekend, we sold $749.00 in sales of all merchandise and $85.00 towards the AAC campership fund by selling Egwa's Campership Fund donor flap and the Atlanta Area Council strip Campership Fund donor patch. If you have any ideas for our 2010 patch set, please email those ideas to me. Remember the 100th year anniversary of Boy Scouting. Also, design a 100th year flap patch/jacket patch. Also send those by email. I hope to see you all at our next Lodge event, the Winter Banquet at the Volunteer Service Center in January of 2010. Your Fellow Brother, Lans Swofford Changes in Next Year s Calendar Due to the addition of many Centennial Events hosted by Atlanta Area Council in the upcoming year, there have been a few changes in our OA calendar. There will be a SummerFest on July 17th at Allatoona. Last year this was a highly successful event which helped persuade many new Arrowmen to stay involved in the OA. It is a fun day for all Arrowmen. The Bert Adams Scout Reservation Ordeal was moved from May to November 5-7 (due to the Centennial Atlanta Area Council Camproee being in May). The Make-Up Allatoona Ordeal was deleted from November due to re-scheduling of the Bert Adams Ordeal to November due to the Council wide encampment in May 2010. Nevertheless, since we are the Brotherhood of cheerful service, we will be providing service to Allatoona at an Allatoona Work Day on August 14th. In addition, the National Park Service Project has been confirmed for March 6, 2010. o Added SummerFest on July 17 at Allatoona o Added Allatoona Service Day on August 14 o Moved BASR Ordeal to November 5-7 o Deleted Allatoona Ordeal from the 2010 calendar Allatoona Ordeal Re-Cap The Allatoona Ordeal went very smoothly thanks to the efforts of everyone involved. We now have 76 new brothers and most everyone who was asked said the weekend was meaningful and memorable to them. The food was excellent and a big thanks goes to the cook team. We led the new brothers into the pavilion and the Vigil Honor members served them as is a long standing tradition. The ranger says that all of the projects were done and he was very pleased. We look forward to seeing everyone at the banquet and at the Woodruff Ordeal. Again, thanks to everyone involved. Did You Know? The name Broad-Winged Hawk was suggested by George Dorsey, who was the Nature Director at Camp Bert Adams from 1929 to 1941. He observed that the broad-winged species of hawk was abundant on and around the camp property. When the Lodge was named he had also researched the Cherokee language, translating broad-winged hawk to equa tawadi, whose literal translation is big hawk, and for ease of pronunciation spelled out as Egwa Tawa Dee. This translation was probably used by Lodge members until the early 1950 s, when the name on the Charter was changed to reflect this translation.
Quiver Page 5 Achewon Woapalanne Chapter Reports Achewon Woapalanne has been having a busy month. We recently decided to hold a second meeting each month that will concentrate on our ceremonies, drum, and dance teams. These meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month, at the usual place and time. Our first meeting was last night - it was a great success. We look forward to what will come in 2010. At the Ordeal this past weekend, we had 11 new brothers inducted into our chapter, and another brother sealed his membership at the brotherhood ceremony. Achewon is also looking forward to participating in the local Cherokee Thanksgiving project, which will distribute meals and other support to local families who are in need. Achewon Woapalanne holds meetings the first (and now third) Thursdays of each month. These meetings are at 7:30 and last until about 9:00, and are held at Canton UMC. All interested in Drum and Dance are welcome to attend. Echota This year, we added 28 new brothers to our chapter, Echota. We had chapter officer elections in October and our chapter adviser attended the National Lodge Adviser Training Seminar in November. Our chapter has also discussed reforming our ceremony team, not only for Cub Scout crossovers, but also for future Ordeals. Our discussions included creating our OA Troop Representative Program in order to strengthen and rebuild our chapter. We are ready to help with the strengthening of the Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge. Etowah Chapter Reports Announcement Attention Chapters: This is the easiest way for your Chapter to communicate to other Chapters and to the Lodge about what your Chapter has done or is planning to do in the near future. We strongly encourage every Chapter Chief or Secretary to submit a Chapter report to vccommunications@aacegwa.org by the stated deadlines. Cvmpe Vekiwv The Allatoona Campout this weekend provided us with two new Brothers and six Arrowmen. Our Chapter provided Pre-Ordeal, Ordeal, and Brotherhood Ceremonies this weekend and all that attended had a great time. So far this year we have a 79% candidate to Arrowman ratio. Congratulations are in effect for Wayne Hicks and Drew McLendon for their election to Vigil. Also, some new additions to the Lodge are Scott Conner (VC Administration), Lans Swofford (VC Finance), Ethan Gordon (BH Committee Chairman), and Drew McClendon (Vigil Chief). We know these fine Arrowmen will lead our Chapter and Lodge to a higher plane of achievement. At Fall Camporee, our Arrowmen helped plant trees for the Douglas County Parks Services. This week we are putting up Christmas Decorations for the Alpha Fowler Community. Our newly elected officers are working on the upcoming events in 2010, and waiting for the upcoming Officer Training Class. We are all looking forward to the Winter Banquet. Remember, Arrowmen, Pre-ordeal, Ordeal, and Brotherhood practice continues every Tuesday night at the Alpha Fowler Community. Also, in January, practice for Arrow of Light Ceremony will start the third Thursday at the LDS Church in Dallas. Etowah chapter is working on Ordeal teams, Crossover teams, and Election teams, as well as working on our yearly Camporee at Bert Adams. This year our Camporee will be a one day event. All Etowah chapter meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month and our ceremony teams practice is on the third Wednesday of every month.
Quiver Page 6 Lockchau Talofau Nagatamen Chapter Reports, Cont. The year is coming to an end and Lockchau Talofau has made great progress! With the past three years we have become stronger and stronger each year. Next year we are planning on having a Pre-O and Ordeal ceremonies teams. Congratulations to 2 more brothers, Dr. Walter Todd and Brian Fujii attended Altoona ordeal and made a commitment to the Order by completing the Brotherhood Trail. This also brings our brotherhood conversion to over 70 percent!! Great job to all who answered the challenge. Our chapter is also performing a clean up at the Ag Center November 21st. With the completion of these hours we will top 400 service hours for the year. With plans in progress for more hours, helping the United States Marines with Toys for Tots over the Holidays, we hope to Reach 500 Hours by the End of this year. We hope everyone has a safe holiday! WWW Lockchau Talofau Lowanne Nimat Lowanne Nimat held Chapter Elections during our October 9th meeting and the new leadership did a great job leading the recent November 12th meeting. Our December 10th meeting will be a holiday party with games (Wii), pizza and, it goes without saying, fun and fellowship. Attendees are asked to bring money for pizza. Lowanne Nimat would like to congratulate its new Ordeal members who went through their Ordeal at Allatoona and we encourage them to attend meetings and get involved. Everything went well with 15 Nagatamen brothers staffing. We are in the process of visiting each troop in our district. We will be holding a Christmas party in December. Soquili Gvnagei We just completed another class of our MOALS (Milton Order of the Arrow Leadership Seminar) in October. MOALS teaches leadership through a series of classes and teambuilding challenges. It is designed for scouts First Class and above who are learning leadership and want to improve their skills. Our entirely OA crew taught all of the classes and led the activities. We had a new venue this time; we held the course in Hembree Park in Roswell. Our tribe hosts this seminar twice a year. We also finished helping with a service project of Holiday Stockings for Soldiers. We collected over $600 and sent 30 stockings to our troops serving in Afghanistan. Our normal OA Tribal Fire will be held on Thursday, November 19th, in conjunction with roundtable at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. All scout and adult OA members are invited. You can join us and become active within the OA. We still have open leadership positions for anyone looking for a new challenge. Tella Qualla Boundary TQB's Allatoona Ordeal went fairly smooth. We now have several new brothers. We have begun planning for our Spring Barbeque. TQB's has also continued its work for our new regalia. Our Drum team is also working very well and we are proud of them. The dance team has been recently created and we have been polishing our drum team's skill. Our planning for our Spring Camporee has also begun. Lodge Adviser s Corner Brothers, I have been a member of EGWA TAWA DEE for more than forty years and have served in many leadership positions over the years. Now, I am looking forward to serving you as your Lodge Adviser. I will need the help of each of you to make this a better Lodge. I guess what I am trying to say is, one person can not make a Lodge. EGWA is a super Lodge now and it will become an even better Lodge if each of you will support me and your elected officers. Budget Changes for 2010 Next year, the budget will be changed a little to better accommodate for all Arrowmen. The event fees for regular Lodge events will be decreased from 18 to 16 dollars per event. To pay for this reduction of prices, the OA dues will be increased from $8 to 9$. In addition, anyone who staffed at our 2009 Adventure Camp will receive a $5 discount for every Lodge event. However, this does not include Conclave since it is on the Section level.
