Light up a Life Remember someone special this December

Light up a Life Rob s We know that Christmas is a very special time of year when people often remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of loved ones. At Kirkwood Hospice, thousands of people come together every December, as part of Light up a Life, to remember people they love by dedicating a light in their honour on our stunning beech tree in the Hospice gardens. You may want to remember someone who has died and is forever in your thoughts. Or you can remember someone living away from home who you may be missing as the year draws to a close. Light up a Life is for everyone regardless of faith or culture. It is for people who do not have a direct connection to the Hospice as well as for those who do. It provides us with a unique opportunity to come together as a community to remember those we love. By taking part, your support also ensures that essential funds are raised for Kirkwood so we can continue looking after people when they really need our help. This year, we will once again hold two very special ceremonies in our beautiful grounds at Kirkwood Hospice on consecutive days; Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December at 4.30pm. These outdoor ceremonies will be ticketed (free admission), with 400 tickets available for each event. A third event, an indoor service, will take place at the Longcauseway Church, Dewsbury on Saturday10th December at 12 noon. If you would like to remember someone you love this Christmas, please use the form opposite to tell us to whom you would like to dedicate your light, and which event you would like to attend. At all three events, a Tree of Lights will be illuminated each light on the tree representing a loved one being remembered. To find out more about this year s Light up a Life, please call us on: 01484 557911 or visit: www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk/lightupalife

mum, Sue Why I m supporting Light up a Life Rob from Dalton As someone who lives very locally, I have been familiar with the work of Kirkwood Hospice for a long time. I m proud to say that I ve regularly supported the Hospice over the years because I ve always felt that it s an extremely worthwhile cause, helping people in their hour of need. Earlier this year, it was my family who needed the Hospice s help. My mum, Sue, spent the final seven days of her life at Kirkwood following a life-limiting illness. The Hospice staff could not do enough for me and my family. They took away the stress and allowed us to spend precious time with Mum. When you know that you have limited time left with someone you love so dearly, someone who brought you into this world, just being close to them without having to worry about anything else is the most beautiful and reassuring thing. I will always cherish that quality time I had with Mum whilst she was at Kirkwood. It made the world of difference to me. In the moments after Mum died, exactly a week after she was admitted, I was alone with her in the room for a short while - but not for long. A nurse must have seen me alone with Mum so she entered the room, held my hand and just sat with me. This was exactly the kind of thing that my mum would have done to comfort me. That nurse helped me to get through the most difficult few minutes of my life. I will always be indebted to her. I would urge everyone to support Kirkwood by taking part in Light up a Life this year. You never know when you, or someone you love, might need the help of the Hospice. For me, Light up a Life 2016 will be very significant. My sister, Katie, died in 2009 and Mum would take part in Light up a Life every year to remember Katie. This provided her with a lot of comfort. In December, I will dedicate a light to Mum and Katie in honour of their memory and everything they achieved.
