Some Facts Of all Black fourth-graders in the nation, 58 percent are functionally illiterate In some cities, 80 percent of African American boys drop out before finishing high school Every day, 1,000 Black children are arrested Nearly 7 percent of Black babies are born to girls under the age of 18 1 in every 8 African-American males age 25-29 is incarcerated The number one cause of death for African-American boys is homicide * Statistics courtesy of Essence Cares (Objectives) 9

The National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) About NCMM: A Nationwide Mentoring Movement Founded by Susan Taylor Participants: Partner organizations: The National Urban League, 100 Black Men of America, the YWCA, The Links, Incorporated A coalition of other organizations: city and state government, churches, community groups, etc. Committed and concerned individuals Vision: A call to action for every able Black adult to mentor a vulnerable young adult in our community 12
