Bereavement in the school community Professional development A death, or life-limiting illness - be it of a parent, a pupil or a member of the school staff - can have a significant impact on the whole school community. Current educational guidance recognises that schools have a vital role to play in promoting emotional health and wellbeing, safety, and community cohesion, and we know from the children and young people we have supported at Child Bereavement UK over the last 22 years, that the way the school manages can have a significant impact on their long-term outcomes. With the right help and support, most bereaved pupils will not need professional help; what they do need is the understanding of familiar and trusted adults. Schools are well placed to provide this support and with some training and guidance, your school s ability to do so will be greatly enhanced.
