HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION 2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed Non-toxic unless ingested in massive doses. May cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pains. Doses over 5g/kg body weight can cause alkalosis and expansion in extracellular fluid volume with oedema. Eye May cause mild eye irritation. Skin May cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals, particularly if the skin is moist. Inhaled May cause cough and mild respiratory irritation. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic This product is used widely in food and medicine. Under normal circumstances, considered to be practically non-harmful by all exposure routes. No evidence of carcinogenicity. Eyes : prolonged contact with dusts may cause conjunctivitis. Skin : repeated exposure may lead to contact dermatitis. Skin irritation may be aggravated in persons with existing skin lesions. Inhalation : acute or chronic asthma may be aggravated by breathing of dust. 2.3 First Aid Swallowed Thoroughly rinse mouth with water. Give large amounts of water to drink. Seek medical attention. Immediately irrigate eyes, including under the eyelids with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. Skin Immediately wash affected areas with plenty of water. Heavily contaminated clothing should be laundered before reuse. Inhaled Remove promptly from exposure to fresh air. Seek medical attention if any symptoms persist. If breathing difficult, provide oxygen. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE 3.1 Exposure Standards An exposure standard has not been established for this product. However, the following is recommended for nuisance dusts : Dusts not otherwise classified : TWA 10 mg/m3 (as inspirable dust) 3.2 Engineering Controls Use handling techniques and equipment that minimises dust generation. General or local exhaust ventilation may be necessary to achieve low dust levels. 3.3 Personal Protection Wear overalls, safety glasses (preferably wrap-around style) and use leather or impervious (rubber) gloves with solutions. If dust levels are high (>10 mg/m3) and approved respirator meeting AS1716 should be provided. Heavily contaminated clothing should be removed and laundered before re-use. Protective equipment should be washed before storage and reuse. Avoid wearing contact lenses. Always wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet. Avoid combined exposure to lime dust and sodium bicarbonate as caustic soda may be formed on the skin. 3.4 Flammability Not flammable under conditions of use. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION 4.1 Storage / Transport This product is not classified as dangerous goods under the provisions of the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail. Avoid generating airborne dust. Flush small spills away with plenty of water. Sweep up large spills together with dust binding agent or use a vacuum cleaner. Place waste in drums and hold for waste disposal. Disposal Dispose of waste by landfill in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility. 4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion This material is not flammable. Will liberate carbon dioxide and form sodium carbonate, which is a respiratory, skin and eye irritant. Extinguishing Media Fire-fighters should wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with eyes and skin.
