The Science of Nutrient and Root Relationships NutriVision capsules contain mesh-encased resin pellets. These resin pellets are capable of exchanging cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions) with the soil, capturing soil nutrients in much the same way a plant root does. Ion-exchanging resins have been used and studied for more than a century. In the 1940s, agricultural scientists began working with resins when they noticed that soil sampling alone wasn t providing a complete picture of the true dynamic nature of nutrient and root relationships within the soil system. 3
Nutrient and Root Interaction NutriVision capsules adsorb potassium by exchanging positively charged ions with potassium in soil solutions made available through mass flow and diffusion. + only 2% of nutrients are taken up by direct contact. + 20% of potassium uptake occurs by mass flow when nutrients not tightly bound in soil are supplied to the root in water flow. + 78% of potassium is acquired by roots through diffusion movement of nutrients from areas of higher to lower concentration. 4

As corn yields reach 300 bushels per acre, nutrient needs intensify, making potassium supplies even more critical. Yet thousands of NutriSolutions Tool tissue samples collected from multiple geographies over the past five years have revealed significant potassium deficiencies in many crops a disturbing finding for farmers on a yield quest. Potassium availability fluctuates from tightly bound to readily available in the soil. map the field Gather tools If using the R7 Tool Pro, identify sampling zones using the yield potential map. If using the R7 Tool, use SAMZ or the bare soil image to create zones. Select the correct image for sampling zones. This requires guidance from someone with direct knowledge of the field, such as the farmer. Images in the carousel may be ideal. These can be obtained in PDF form from the Info tab in the R7 Tool. If an acceptable image cannot be found in the carousel, more are likely available in R7 Tool Pro. Collect soil samples Sample soil at two depths in each location, getting as close to active root zones as possible. Keep the probe vertical and avoid going beyond the deepest measurement. In no-till fields, collect samples at depths of 0 to 3 inches and 3 to 6 inches. In conventional or strip tillage, collect samples at depths of 0 to 6 inches and 6 to 12 inches. While the soil is still in the probe, use a knife to separate the core into the appropriate length (3 or 6 inches, depending on field tillage). Place shallow and deep samples in separate, clearly labeled buckets. A total of 25 cores samples should be collected from each zone to create an accurate composite picture. When all samples have been collected, thoroughly mix the soil in each bucket. Collect TISSUE samples Collect one leaf from each soil sample location. Select the top, most recently mature leaves for the tissue sample. If plants are young or small, take two leaves per soil sample location. Place leaf samples in coded NutriSolutions bags. If using a mobile device to capture sample information, record data before leaving the sampling location. Prepare nutrivision capsule paste After thoroughly mixing the soil in each bucket, make note of the labeled soil depths and set out the corresponding labeled NutriVision capsule cups. Remove the caps from the NutriVision capsule cups and use a plastic measuring spoon to add 3 tablespoons (50 g) of corresponding soil to the deionized water provided in each resin capsule sample cup. Mix well. Consider capping and shaking the cups between adding soil for optimum mixing. The paste should have the consistency of oatmeal, grits or thick pudding. Do not remove NutriVision capsules from cups. Do not add to or replace deionized water with any other type of water. Enter all required information on the NutriVision capsule submission form. bag soil and send samples for analysis If a traditional soil sample has not been collected from the field in the past six months, send the remaining soil in each bucket for analysis. Label and fill the sample bags, one for each sample depth. Repeat this process for each of the sampling zones, rinsing buckets between zones. Send soil, tissue and NutriVision capsule samples the same day or the following morning. If storing overnight, place in a cool, dry location.
