MorEPA cholesterol Maintain healthy cholesterol levels* * Monacolin K from red yeast rice helps maintain normal cholesterol levels in the blood with a dose of 10 mg per day. 2

This brochure provides tips on how to maintain a healthy cholesterol level naturally. Good and bad cholesterol Cholesterol is a fat, which occurs naturally in the body. In fact there is only one cholesterol, even though we talk about good and bad cholesterol. Because good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) helps remove excess cholesterol from the body it is referred to as good. Bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) transports cholesterol to all the cells in the body. What cells cannot use remains in the circulation and, if present in high amounts, can be deposited. Hence the name bad. Two thirds of all cholesterol is produced by the body, once third is derived from what we eat. As always, good health is your decision, i.e. by choosing a healthy and varied diet. 3

How do nutrients affect your health? 1. Red yeast rice helps maintain a healthy cholesterol level Red Yeast Rice is ordinary rice, which has been fermented. During this process the rice grains turn dark red and monacolin K is produced. Monacolin K helps maintain a healthy cholesterol level with a dose of 10 mg per day. 4

2. Omega-3 helps maintain healthy heart function The Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA help maintain healthy heart function, providing at least 250 mg is consumed daily. EPA and DHA are found in oily fish, seaweed and seafood. A daily food supplement is also a good alternative. 3. Folic acid with vitamins B 6 & B 12 help maintain a healthy homocysteine metabolism The normal metabolism of homocysteine is optimised in the body by 3 vitamins: folic acid, vitamin B 6 and vitamin B 12. Folic acid is found in, amongst others, spinach, sprouts or broccoli. Vitamin B 6 is found in, for example, fish, eggs, whole grains, brown rice or walnuts. Vitamin B 12 is found in fish, meat and dairy produce. 5

6

Five tips to control your cholesterol level 1. Eat less saturated fat 2. Also include oats and barley in your diet 3. Introduce vegetable Omega-3 into your diet 4. Use garlic 5. Exercise Replace red meat, full fat dairy produce and palm oil with poultry, fish, low fat dairy produce (low fat milk and yoghurt) and olive oil. Providing you are not allergic to gluten, you will benefit from the béta-glucans in oats (bran) and barley (bran), 3 g per day is recommended. Consuming 2 grams of vegetable Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) per day from, for example, green leafy vegetables, flax seed, linseed, walnut and rapeseed oil, will help maintain a normal cholesterol level. Replace your Omega-6 rich cooking oils, such as sunflower or corn oil, with Omega-3 rich vegetable based fatty acid sources. Freshly squeezed garlic will greatly enhance the flavour of your meals and help maintain a healthy circulation and cholesterol level. At least 30 minutes of exercise daily is the norm. It will keep your weight under control. You don t have to be a fitness freak; you could regularly do some gardening, walk the dog or walk to the shops. 11
