National Bandanna Day Fundraising Guide

THANK YOU! Cancer is different in a young person s world, and in this year alone, 23,000 young people will have their world turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis. We help young people cope with cancer in their family, rebuild their foundations and connect with others in the same boat. That s how CanTeen is the difference. On behalf of the young people you have helped, we would like to thank you for supporting CanTeen by joining thousands of other Australians who are doing their bit to make a difference. By hosting a National Bandanna Day fundraiser, you are helping make sure that no young person faces cancer alone. I couldn t thank someone supporting CanTeen enough their support means more than they could possibly imagine. When you have been affected by cancer you don t take anything for granted and we don t take CanTeen for granted. All the support is received with the utmost thankfulness. Jess 24 years old, CanTeen Patient Member 2

Meet Lou! Lou joined CanTeen at the beginning of 2014 as an offspring member when her mother s cancer spread to her lungs and spine. It was something that changed my life and I became a member not long after finding out mum s news. The support that I received was amazing and as cheesy as it is - CanTeen was the light at the end of my tunnel. CanTeen helps so many people whether they are patients, have a sibling or parent with cancer or have lost a family member to cancer - there would be a large amount of young people who would be left dealing with cancer on their own - and no young person should have to face cancer alone. Lou raised $3,444 during National Bandanna Day 2014 by hosting a Tea-riffic Tea Party and selling merchandise in her home town of Parkes, NSW. The funds she raised will provide resources for 140 young people which will guide them through the challenges of living with cancer. How do the funds you raise help? Every dollar raised will help CanTeen provide both practical and emotional support for young people like Lou through counselling services, individual assistance, online resources and peer support programs. $50 Will help pay for one young person to attend a CanTeen Recreation Day and have a break from the daily pressures of living with cancer. $150 Will enable two young people living with cancer to have an hour long face-to-face counselling session. $350 Will enable one young person who has lost a parent or sibling to attend a weekend program where they learn to understand grief and develop skills to manage it. $500 Will enable two young people to attend a one-night New Member Program to get a taste of what a CanTeen program involves and start connecting with others going through similar experiences. 3

Fundraising ideas for you! We want to make it as easy as possible for you to get started, so here are our top 3 fundraising ideas! Remember, you can be as original and as out there as you want, so don t be afraid to let your creativity run wild! 1. HOST A MORNING/AFTERNOON TEA Make supporting young people your cup of tea. Throw on the apron, pop on the kettle and invite your colleagues, friends and family to join you in the fight against cancer. Charge an entry fee and just like that, you have raised some much needed funds! FUN TIP: Start baking and sell some cakes at your fundraiser. Get your friends involved as well and together you can bake an even bigger difference! 2. HOLD A DRESS UP/ DRESS DOWN DAY Hold a dress up or dress down day at work. Collect a gold coin to participate and fine those who don t join the fun! FUN TIP 1: Incorporate the bandannas into your outfit to showcase the range of bandannas that are available! FUN TIP 2: As part of the day, hold a sweepstakes among colleagues in your workplace. Charge $5 to enter the winner can keep half the takings and the other half can go towards your fundraising target. 3. HOLD A BANDANNA DAY BBQ Start up the BBQ and spark some much needed awareness for CanTeen. Charge $2 (or so) per sausage sandwich and enjoy the chance to ketchup with family and friends. FUN TIP: See if you can get a prize donated from a local business and hold a raffle at your barbeque. While there is no prize quite like supporting young people, we re sure they ll still enjoy it. Go Catherine!! For National Bandanna Day 2014, Catherine got her family and friends together to enjoy some tea and cake, and raised $827 for young people living with cancer. 4 $827 This could pay for two young people to attend a 3-day Good Grief Program. These programs give young people a place to learn about grief and loss associated with the death of a parent or sibling to cancer and ways to deal with their emotions. It s also a safe environment for them to show their grief at a time when they may be staying strong to spare other family members.

Be the host who raises the most! Once you know what sort of fundraiser you want to host, it s time to think about how you can make the most of it. No money in the tin you re not coming in! Sell tickets for your fundraiser make sure you have a donation tin at the entrance to your fundraiser and collect a gold coin donation to make sure everyone is doing their bit! Healthy competition Add a bit of a competitive edge to your fundraiser and hold a competition on the day. Fill a jar with jellybeans or sweets and charge $1 a guess; hold a fashion parade on your casual dress day and vote for who wears their bandanna best; include a cake decorating competition or incorporate a quiz into your fundraiser. Run a raffle Approach local businesses, your family and friends to donate prizes to raffle off at your fundraiser. Draw the winners at the end of your event for a way to finish with a bang! Match my efforts Ask the company you work for to match your fundraising efforts using our template at www.bandannaday.com.au Lou s top tips! Lou raised $3,444 by promoting her tea party in the local media and fundraising online at everydayhero.com.au so that even those friends and family far away could show their support. It is such an easy thing to do and you are helping so many people by simply selling bandannas or hosting a fundraiser. The best advice I could possibly give is make sure you advertise (or remind) people about your up coming event - make sure people know that it is coming up. Don t forget your bandanna If you haven t already, order your merchandise to sell, and wear your bandanna at your fundraiser. Selling just one box will cover the cost of THREE hour long face to face counselling sessions they ll be sure to want them, plus they look great! Order at www.bandannaday.com.au Show your thanks Make sure your guests know how much their attendance and support helps by playing the CanTeen video and thanking all those who participated. Let them know how much you raised to support young people living with cancer.

Step by step guide! 1 Pick your fundraiser: There are literally hundreds of things you can do to support CanTeen but we don t want you to exhaust yourself just pick one! Choose one of the events above and you re already there! 2 Plan your activity: To get the most out of your event there are a couple of practicalities to consider. Pick a place and a time, pick a fundraising target and think about how you can get the most out of your fundraiser. HELPFUL HINT: Why not get a group of colleagues together to be in charge of the event? Everyone can be responsible for a different aspect of the day and it is a great way to get everyone motivated and raring to go! 3 Spread the word: The more people who know about your fundraiser the more money you can raise! Register your fundraiser with www.everydayhero.com.au and share your link on social media. Or, you can download our invites and posters from www.bandannaday.com.au and spread the word across your workplace or local area. 4 Enjoy yourself! You are doing a wonderful thing for CanTeen make sure you have fun while you do it! We want you to have a great time at your fundraiser, and we would love to hear all about it, so don t forget to tag @CanTeenAus and #bandannaday on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! 5 Pay in the funds raised: Once the fundraising is over, it s time to collect donations and send them through. For more information on how to return these funds, see page 7. 6 Reward yourself: You have done an amazing thing! Because of you, more young people living with cancer will receive the support and services they need. Be sure to take a moment, relax, and give yourself the credit you deserve. Lisa leading the way!! Lisa asked guests at her 50 th birthday party to purchase bandannas instead of birthday presents and raised a whopping $741 for National Bandanna Day 2014. These funds have allowed for ten young people dealing with cancer to each have a face-to-face counselling session. 6 $741
