3 Objectives Understand the role of nurses in the provision of HIV and AIDS related care within a multidisciplinary team Explain the specific competencies related to the interdisciplinary approach core competency for HIV and AIDS

4 Background Comprehensive health care delivery depends on different health care providers Application is relevant in the fight against HIV and AIDS HIV and AIDS are part of the main health priorities in South Africa (SA) The 2015 UNAIDS estimates: about 7 million people living with HIV in SA

5 Background The HIV epidemic affects all aspects of life: o Physiological o Economic at different levels o Social Nurses role in the fight against HIV is undisputable majority of health care professionals

6 Introduction Nurses training should be relevant and aligned to the workplace needs and functioning This involves functioning within a interdisciplinary team Hence the need to develop competencies to facilitate working with other health care providers in the fight against HIV and AIDS

7 Purpose Development of interdisciplinary approach competency related to HIV and AIDS for integration into the preservice training of nurses in one university in South Africa.

8 Methods Paradigm: Constructivism Intervention research: Design and development through three distinct phases Developing the HIV and AIDS related competencies Curriculum development workshops outcomes and integration plan Validation workshop and expert feedback

9 Content analysis Data collection and analysis 17 Individual interviews 9 Nominal group technique discussions 6 Workshops 3 expert feedback validation reports

10 Participants 112 participants in all three phases (64/30/18) 12.8% of participated in more than 1 phase Nurse educators from 7 of the 9 provinces in the country Nurses in practice Recent nurse graduates Members of the governing body (South African Nursing Council) People living with HIV

11 Interdisciplinary approach competency for HIV and AIDS Correct and appropriate participation in the interdisciplinary team Interdisciplinary provision of care for holistic care and enhanced quality HIV nursing care Continuous collaboration with other healthcare providers in different settings Participation and engagement in community programmes

13 Specific competency areas Community engagement Participation and collaboration in community activities Referral systems Following proper referral pathway and be timeous Support systems Linking patients to support services

14 Specific competency areas Community engagement And the campaigns, the important thing is that our students need to be involved in campaigns of awareness. Referral systems Identify the need for referral system. Support systems Knowing what are the resources available to the community.

15 Discussion These competencies are needed for practice after graduation Opportunity for uninterrupted HIV and AIDS care Competencies to be developed in the preservice training of nurses

16 Conclusion Integration of these competencies provides opportunity to enhance nursing training for HIV and AIDS care Developed exit level and year level outcomes for each competency to facilitate integration in the pre-service nursing curriculum in South Africa
