A PEPFAR Perspective on HCD & Measurement Emily Harris USAID s Office of HIV and AIDS 5/8/2018 FOOTER GOES HERE 1
Why are funders so interested in experimenting with human-centered design? HCD presents a promising tool to solve tough last mile challenges such as those that must be overcome to achieve the HIV and AIDS communities global goal of reaching epidemic control HCD can facilitate public-private partnerships key to infusing new expertise, innovation and resources 5/8/2018 FOOTER GOES HERE 2
Girls and young women account 74% for of new HIV infections among adolescents in sub-saharan Africa. 5/8/2018 3
DIG, Project Imbali New, women-controlled methods for HIV prevention exist, but they are not living up to their promise. 5/8/2018 4
DIG, Project Imbali And, the complex issues driving young women s increased risk requires a systemic as well as a product-specific approach. 5/8/2018 5
Engage HCD & Project Imbali Increase and Sustain Use of DPV/MPT rings by Engaging Young Sub-Saharan African Women and their Influencers 6
DREAMS and the Private Sector PEPFAR works with stellar private sector partners to innovate and find the most effective ways to change girls lives. Their voices and support are critical. Girl Effect is launching a culture brand in Malawi to reach the most vulnerable girls (and boys) with DREAMS messaging Johnson & Johnson listens to and brings girls voices to life to tell success stories; inform programming; and amplify messaging. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds implementation research and an impact evaluation Gilead provides resources to purchase pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) ViiV provides capacity-building to community-based organizations

DREAMS Results World AIDS Day, 2017 For the first time, the latest PEPFAR data show significant declines in new HIV diagnoses among adolescent girls and young women. In the 10 African countries (63 districts) implementing DREAMS, the majority (65%) of the highest-hivburden communities or districts achieved a percent or greater decline in new HIV diagnoses among young women. Importantly, new diagnoses declined in nearly all DREAMS intervention districts.

Design Public Goods Recognizing both the opportunity and challenges for HCD in global health, USAID led by its Center for Accelerating Impact and Innovation (CII) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is seeking to cultivate a community of HCD practitioners (CoP) committed to demonstrating HCD s value to the wider global health community.
