1 Name : Dr. R.S. Paranjape Designation : Director and Scientist G Date of Birth : 20/10/1952 Department : Immunology Address : rparanjape@nariindia.org, director@nariindia.org Educational Qualification : Degree Year Institute / University Ph.D University of Madras M.Sc. (Medical Microbiology) 1975 All India Institute of Medical Sciences B.Sc. (Zoology) 1972 Pune University Areas of Interest: After post graduation from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, research career began at the Tuberculosis Research Center. Primary area of research was in the Immunology of Filariasis. Notable work in the area includes identification and characterization of circulating filarial antigen, development of monoclonal antibodies against the antigen and establishment of the diagnostic test for detection of circulating antigen. Immunology of Tuberculosis was the other area of research. The work included the study of cell-mediated immune response in pulmonary tuberculosis patients and tuberculous meningitis. Joined the National AIDS Research Institute in 1993 and had a major role in establishing the laboratories at the Institute. Immunology of HIV infection is the main area of interest. The initial work established the presence of strong, poly-clonal cross-clade cytotoxic T lymphocyte response in the early seroconverters. Subsequent work has shown that patients infected with HIV-1C show cross-clade as well as cladespecific response. A prospective study on recent seroconverters have shown that there is weak association of clade-specific consistent response with lower plasma virus load. The repertoire of CTL epitopes recognized by HIV infected patients is being delineated. The other studies include the study of neutralizing antibodies in HIV infection, nef gene diversity, screening of herbal and other preparations for anti-hiv activity in vitro. As the Officer-in-Charge, have had greater role of coordinating and directing the research activities of the Institute. The role also involves generation of funds through intra- and extra-mural projects, capacity building through infra-structure development and training and overall leadership for the research.

2 Research Experience: I joined the services of Indian Council of Medical Research in 1976 as an Assistant Research Officer. I am engaged in medical research since then. The field of research was Immunology and the Initial work was in the field of Filariasis Immunology and Tuberculosis Immunology. Considering the importance of research in HIV and AIDS I was transferred to the National AIDS Research Institute and given the responsibility of establishing Serology and Immunology laboratories in the new premises of the Institute. I have also initiated a programme of Immunological studies.
