3 3 Background information Hepatitis B and D Hepatitis D is caused by infection with the hepatitis D virus (HDV) and is considered to be the most severe form of viral hepatitis in humans. Hepatitis D infections always occur in the presence of a co-existing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and are spread in the same way as HBV, mainly through parenteral exposure. The virus shows high prevalence in the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East, South and Central Asia, West Africa, the Amazon Basin of South America and certain South Pacific Islands. Every individual who is HBV-positive should be tested for HDV at least once (Wedemeyer and Manns, 2010). The method of choice for confirmation of HBV and HDV infection, as well as assessing the effectiveness of antiviral treatment should be quantitative Real-Time PCR, which can detect 5 to 25 IU/ml in serum of infected patients. Linear regression of quantitative results from both tests (n=10 3 ) showed a very high degree of correlation. Data were compared with results obtained at a accredited laboratory applying a certified in-house assay. Application example Linearity of > 8 logs of the RoboGene HDV RNA Quantification Kit 2.0 was determined by analyzing a dilution series of synthetic HDV quantitation standard ranging from 5 to copies per run.
