Adherence And Nutrition Emanueli Msuya Moshi Kilimanjaro Tanzania And Shonte Daniels Azusa California
Topics you will be learning Adherence Meaning Medication Adherence Why is adherence important Poor adherence Factors that make adherence difficult Income generating activities and nutritious food Aging up Dream kite (Follow up from last year)
Adherence The noun adherence is related to the verb adhere, meaning to stick. Adherence means "sticking to" or "being faithful to," such as your adherence to your diet even when chocolate cake is around.
ACTIVITY: SITUATION; I AM INFECTED WITH HIV/AIDS UNHELPFUL HELPFUL Thought Thought
Medication Adherence? Medication adherence means to stick firmly to your medication. So for people with HIV, medication adherence means sticking firmly to an HIV regimen taking HIV medicines every day and exactly as prescribed.
Why is adherence to an HIV regimen Adherence to an HIV regimen gives HIV medicines the chance to do their job: to prevent HIV from multiplying and destroying the immune system. HIV medicines help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. HIV medicines also reduce the risk of HIV transmission. important?
Antiretroviral Therapy
CD4 (Askari) as a marker of adherence
The Askari with Medication (ART) keeps the simba (HIV asleep)
Without medication, Simba (HIV) wakes up and beats up the Askari
Poor adherence Poor adherence to an HIV regimen allows HIV to destroy the immune system. A damaged immune system makes it hard for the body to fight off infections and certain cancers. Poor adherence also increases the risk of drug resistance and HIV treatment failure.
Resistance can be attributed to many reasons and not adhering to medication is one of them. Drug resistance can develop as HIV multiplies in the body. When HIV multiplies, the virus sometimes mutates (changes form) and makes variations of itself.
What happens if one does not adhere to medication? Taking HIV medicines every day prevents HIV from multiplying, which reduces the risk that the HIV will mutate and produce drug-resistant HIV. Skipping HIV medicines allows HIV to multiply, which increases the risk of drug-resistant HIV developing. Research shows that a person s first HIV regimen offers the best chance for long-term treatment success. So adherence is important from the start when a person first begins taking HIV medicines.
What makes adherence so difficult? Adherence to an HIV regimen can be difficult for several reasons. For example: side effects from HIV medicines, such as nausea or diarrhea, can make it hard to follow an HIV regimen. When an HIV regimen includes several HIV medicines, it s easy to forget how many pills to take and when to take them. Poor planning of treatment (plan from the start)
Factors that make adherence difficult. Side effects from interactions between HIV medicines and other medicines a person may take Trouble swallowing pills or other difficulty taking medicines A busy schedule, shift work, or travel away from home that makes it hard to take medicines on time Illness or depression Alcohol or drug use that interferes with the activities of daily life Fear of disclosing one s HIV-positive status to others Ones own lack of understanding of the disease.
5 Key Ways to Improve Medication Adherence Improving medication adherence is a constant struggle within the healthcare world. Did you know that it's estimated that between 20% to 50% of patients are non-adherent? A shocking number that reminds us that the patient isn't the only responsible for medication adherence: the health care providers play a large role too.
1. Trust & Communication Patients may be embarrassed to ask about certain medications or don't understand how their medication works, resulting in non-adherence. Build trust with your patients. (Do not be judgemental) Engage them. Keep the lines of communication open and show your support.
2. Drug Education Patient education is one of the best methods for improving adherence, especially for those simultaneously managing more than six medications. Pharmacists are often in the perfect position to educate and provide medication assistance to patients.
3. Medication Therapy Management Comprehensive medication review, including a personal medication report that lists all the medications the patient is taking Medication action plan Education and counseling or other resources to enhance understanding about using the medication and to improve adherence
4. Technology From mobile apps to pill-monitoring technology, technology is revolutionizing the healthcare industry.
5. Traditional Reminders Not all patients have access to digital drug medication assistance or adherence-based apps, so it's important to think of traditional and alternative ways to improve medication management. Daily Activities
