Major Health Hazards: causes burns, may cause serious damage to eyes, respiratory tract irritant. POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS Health Effects: Acute Swallowed: Eye: Skin: Inhaled: Chronic Health effects are likely to occur from overexposure. Harmful. Burns mouth throat and irritates gastro-intestinal system. Nausea, stomach pain and vomiting may result. Harmful, irritant and may be corrosive if not washed out immediately. If heated or in contact with acids, the product may emit chlorine gas which is a severe eye irritant. Likely to cause irritation. Repeated contact may cause de-fatting of skin leading to dermatitis. A dust inhalation hazard. Inspirable dust may cause severe respiratory irritation. Severe exposure may cause shortness of breath and pulmonary oedema. If the product is heated above 40 C or comes into contact with acids, chlorine gas may be emitted. Chlorine causes severe irritation to nose and throat and possible lung damage. No data indicating any chronic effects of ingredients other than chlorinated trisodium phosphate, were found. The latter substance in the NTP carcinogenicity study, produced a result of No evidence; mouse and "Inadequate evidence; rat. Treat as exposure to strong alkaline salts and consider exposure to chlorine gas may have occurred, otherwise treat symptomatically. 5: FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES Fire/explosion Hazard: Oxides of carbon nitrogen produced in a fire. May produce toxic chlorinated compounds in a fire. Fire fighters to wear full respiratory protection and protective clothing for chemical fires. Extinguishing Media: Water jets or fog, foam or dry powder. Emergency workers: Should wear full protective equipment and supplied breathing apparatus. Toxic or irritating particulates, vapours or gases may be produced. Spray water on containers to cool to prevent over-pressure. Evacuate area to upwind of fire. Summon Fire Service immediately. 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Spills and Disposal: Step 1. Cover with dry absorbent, remove used absorbent and pack in properly labelled container for disposal. Step 2. Wash contaminated area and repeat step 1. Dispose of waste by negotiation with waste authority. Disposal of used absorbent to ordinary landfill expected to be approved. 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE Hazards are greatly reduced when using this chemical in a responsible manner. Read product label and follow directions thereon. The product is usually scooped out of the container with a measuring cup or similar scoop device. Ensure risk of raising dust is minimised. Ensure the dust minimisation occurs throughout the whole procedure while in transit from the container to the dishwashing machine or other surfaces. Any non-intended or non-authorised use of this product may result in severe personal injuries including severe burning to throat, gastro-intestinal system and eyes. Can cause severe irritation to skin. Always wear appropriate gloves, protection for eyes and face mask to protect nose and mouth. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling product and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities. Always store product in original container and keep lid tightly sealed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated area and away from incompatible materials such as foodstuffs.
