2 Background Ben Atkinson-Willes was a design student at Kingston University, when his grandfather developed Alzheimer s disease. In caring for him he found there was almost no suitable activities available for people living with dementia. This forced Ben s family to use children s toys to keep his 86 year old grandfather entertained. It seemed completely unacceptable that a care system looking after over 850,000 people with dementia was using children s toys to keep them occupied. 01

33 Learnings I thought one of our residents would have really not liked this - but then she loved it and spent ages engaging with it. We were really shocked. It just shows, that you can never tell what someone will like or not until you actually try it out. Activity Co-ordinator 032

34 Learnings Products themselves are not enough, we must also train and educate the people working closest with people with dementia to create the best experience, and this is what we need. Activity Co-ordinator 033
