4 Growing Evidence for Acupuncture In a paper published online May 30 in Nature Neuroscience, a team at the University of Rochester Medical Center identifies the molecule adenosine as a central player in parlaying some of the effects of acupuncture in the body The new findings add to the scientific heft underlying acupuncture, said neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., who led the research. University of Rochester Medical Center News Release, May 30, 2010 Functional MRI studies in humans have shown immediate effects of prolonged acupuncture stimulation in limbic and basal forebrain areas related to somatosensory and affective functions that are known to be involved in pain processing Acupuncture also has effects on local tissues, including mechanical stimulation of connective tissue, release of adenosine at the site of needle stimulation, and increases in local blood flow. National Institutes of Health Currently, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for lower back pain There is reasonably good evidence that acupuncture is an effective treatment for: chronic back pain dental pain pain and discomfort during gastrointestinal endoscopy headache nausea and vomiting after an operation pain and discomfort during oocyte retrieval (a procedure used during IVF) osteoarthritis of the knee. U.K. National Health Service Because of the side effects of long term drug therapy for pain and the risks of dependence, acupuncture analgesia can be regarded as the method of choice for treating many chronically painful conditions.
