2017 Healthcare Surfaces Summit Functional Design Targets! Hospital Infection Control! Max Munn, CEO and Founder Munnworks, LLC

Problem: Sinks in hospital bathrooms are major source of microbes that cause infec7on. 7 of 8 sinks in the isola7on rooms of the ICU were found to be CPE contaminated. An#microbial Resistance & Infec#on Control, Published: 16 February 2017, hbps://doi.org/ /s Teen Saved by Transplant, Killed by Superbug at NIH Hospital Outbreak responsible for killing mul#ple pa#ents at the facility Study Tracks How Superbugs Splash Out of Hospital Sink Drains NBC News: hbp:// Spread from the Sink to the Pa7ent Using Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) to Model Bacterial Dispersion from Hand-Washing Sink-Trap Reservoirs University of Virginia, Mar 31, 2017, hbps:// Light showing the bacteria in a hospital bathroom sink

Economic Impact Impact of healthcare associated infec7on (HAI) 4 to 5% of the pa#ents who enter a healthcare facility will acquire a HAI Resul#ng in an es#mated 75,000 to 100,000 deaths per year At least 50% or more of these infec7ons are preventable. Cost components Since 2009, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) no longer covers the healthcare costs for HAI Healthcare facili#es are responsible for the HAI medical costs not covered by insurance In 2011, CMS began to also levy a fine for high infec7on rates. HAI s extend the pa#ent #me in the facility, thus loss of that bed due to extended stay Es7mate of HAI costs to hospitals In U.S. hospitals alone, HAIs infect 1 in 20 pa#ents and the result is an es#mated $35.7 billion to $45 billion in excess medical costs (RM Klevens, 2007) The financial benefit of using preven#on prac#ces is es#mated to be $25 billion to $31.5 billion in medical cost savings. (RD ScoB, 2009)

Issues with typical hospital bathroom sinks today Impossible to clean all areas behind faucet especially #le in back of sink and drain Ofen toilet located within close proximity of sink and countertops adding microbial contamina#on Last but not least, our disinfec#ng backlit mirror, with a ligh#ng color at 2700K, enhances one s appearance

Expert collabora7on has resulted in a unique solu7on NBBJ Sea(le Highly regarded as an interna#onal leader in architecture for healthcare Most Admired Firm by Interior Design magazine 3 years in a row 75 awards for healthcare in past 10 years Looking for a backlit mirror for pa#ent rooms that provides ease of maintenance and complies with infec#on control requirements & MunnWorks Designer and manufacturer of fine mirrors () With a focus on design and an understanding of the surface pathogen issue, the development of this backlit disinfec#ng mirror was enabled Objec7ves Reduce unacceptably high level of contamina#on on countertops, sink, drain & backsplash Mirror illumina#on that enhances the appearance of the viewer Design a disinfec#ng mirror to Address the cri#cal issue of infec#on control Create a home or hotel like atmosphere that was more hospitable

Result: The Disinfec7ng Mirror Style Serves as a both a wall mirror and ligh#ng fixture Aesthe#cally pleasing Easy to install Func7on Provides 99.99% destruc#on of pathogens (Suppor#ng data to follow) When used for approximately 2 hours over a 24-hour period. Easily accessible for maintenance & cleaning Mirror and electronic chassis on hinge En#rely safe Variable #ming op#ons available

UV LED LIGHT ON UV LED LIGHT OFF

THE POWER OF UV LED DISINFECTION: Disinfec#on performance is a func#on of the UV dose applied to the micro-organism: dose being the product of UV power mul#plied by #me. Not all micro-organisms respond to UV light in the same way, as shown in the graph to the right. For example, to kill 99.99% (4- log) of E.coli, roughly 5mJ/cm2 is required (or, put another way, 5mW/second/cm2). However, if #me is no constraint, we can kill 99.99% of E.coli with just 0.08mW/cm2 in only one minute! Above graph provided by Sensor Electric Technology, Inc.

Result: The Disinfec7ng Mirror Sink Handles Clostridium difficile (C diff) >99.99% afer 1 hr exposure Methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA) >99.99% afer 30 min Sink Basin C diff >99.99% afer 2 hr MRSA >99.99% afer 1 hr Sink Edge C diff >99% afer 2 hr MRSA >99% afer 1 hr Note: E.Coli data similar to MRSA Resinnova Laboratories MaBhew Hardwick, PHD
