1 A BRIEF HISTORY OF MAGNETIC THERAPY It took going to the heavens to discover one of the greatest secrets on earth: a magnetic field is essential for the human body to survive. With this fact in mind, as well as his own results, Craig Trinder created BioMagnetic. Based on the natural laws of magnetic therapy and non-invasive, it does not involve needles, drugs or surgery. History has it that physicians dating back as far as 800BC used a form of magnetic therapy, for both pain relief and to promote good health. So did the Aztec Indians of South America and their counterparts in Ancient Greece, Egypt, India and China. They didn t know why it worked, it just did. To them it was a gift of nature... of the gods... powerful magic. Today, bio magnetic therapy is no longer ancient history or a mysterious force. Science has established that a magnetic field affects all living things, right down to the atom. It surrounds the Earth and protect all living things from harmful radiation. We are an electromagnetic machine. Our cells are alive, constantly forming and renewing themselves at a rate of more than 1 million per second. All these cells, organs and tissues send information through our nervous system as fast as 300km per hour. Like animals, plants and every living system on the planet, we are affected by the daily cycle of the Earth s magnetic field. But we are also constantly being bombarded with an excess of man-made electromagnetic radiation - interference from television, radio, radar, household appliances, power lines, mobile phones and much more. This bombardment may be incompatible with our body s own bio rhythms. According to some research, magnetism causes the heating up of electrons, which expand the blood vessels, so eliminating cellular clumping (think of a bag of jelly beans left in the sun). When red cells become imbalanced and tired, they stick together and can t absorb as much oxygen, or release as much carbon dioxide. This same research suggests that the use of magnets may help with temporary pain relief.

2 RESEARCH CONDUCTED AT ISUZU HOSPITAL IN TOKYO DURING 1976 Tokyo s lsuzu Hospital tested magnet therapy on more than 11,000 people, in the classic study, 'Magnetic Deficiency Syndrome'. The participants in the study suffered muscle spasm in the shoulder and neck region, with pain extending to the upper neck and head and down the back. With magnet therapy, 90% of the patients achieved significant relief from pain. In the search for a universal cure-all, none, at this point in time, could possibly fit the description as well as magnetic energy therapy. The application of magnets has given proven pain relief in seven out of ten users. As good as, or better than orthodox medicine. said Chief of Staff. 11,648 people were tested for the following pain conditions. General magnetic therapy was used. Women made up 57% of the total and men 43%. The most represented age group was years. The comments made by the 92% can be summarised into three categories: Very effective Effective Fairly effective Less than 8% regarded the product as ineffective or not very effective. Usually, the effects became apparent on the second or third day of use. More than 90% of the results classified as efficacious appeared before the end of the forth day. (Note: No negative effects, such as aggravation of the symptoms, were reported.) CASE STUDY - REFERENCE NUMBER VOLUME 78, NOVEMBER 1997 A double-blind study was conducted at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research in Houston, Texas. Results were released in November Summary results of testing of using magnetic therapy for arthritic pain, joint pain & significant muscular pain were that 76% of the patients who received magnetic therapy reported a significant and quick decrease of arthritis pain and discomfort in joints and muscles. In March 1980, French researchers analysed four Japanese studies, all undertaken in One was conducted at the Facility of Medicine of the University of Tokyo. The second was by the University Juntendo, Tokyo. The third was bat the Kohnodai National Hospital. The last was at the Isuzu Hospital in Tokyo.

3 Some tests were double-blind with a placebo, where certain subjects received no magnetised product. Neither the doctors nor subjects knew which products were magnetised until after results had been collected. The main symptoms which the study concentrated on were pain in the neck, back, shoulders, arms, hands and legs. 400 subjects took part in the first three studies. Over 11,600 took part in the last (Nakagawa). After careful study, two important points stood out: 1. The effectiveness on the given symptoms of the magnetic field supplied by the product is quite evident. It falls into the range of 60% to 80%. 2. The time frame for the action is within 7 and 14 days. The first congress of Magnetotherapy, organised by Coghill Research Laboratories, was held in the Royal Society of Medicine in London, England, May The proceedings introduced over 50 studies and research reports on magnetic therapies, the majority of which were very positive. For example three outstanding reports were published in Croatia outlining the treatment of 1,261 people in a rehabilitation hospital using PMF therapy. Eastern Bloc countries have traditionally researched magnetic therapy much more vigorously that the West. Many of the studies presented at the First Congress in Magnetotherapy originated in countries where magnetic therapy was seen as an economical option to drug therapy.

"Studies have shown that magnetic field therapy facilitates healing of broken bones by stimulating circulation and bone growth," says Hans-Ulrich Jabs, an internist in the German town of Nottuln and head of the medicine and wellness section of the Duesseldorf- based German Wellness Association. The physics of the therapy is as follows: When electricity flows through a conductor, a magnetic field, with concentric lines of force, forms around it. Such a magnetic field - produced by a solenoid, magnetic-field device, or other magnetic object - is used to rectify, as it were, the reduced and impaired electrical tension in the cells of an unwell body. Depending on their strength, magnetic fields can penetrate bodily structures and stimulate cells, according to Jabs. The procedure is said to boost cellular metabolism, accelerate healing, and strengthen the entire body's natural defences. The Munich-based German Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (DGPMR) is sceptical of such claims, however, saying there is still no sufficient proof of the efficacy of magnetic field therapy. "Aside from isolated experiments, magnetic field therapy has been unable to take hold at university hospitals and in medical textbooks during the past 30 years," said Professor Peter Kroeling, the DGPMR's second vice-president. "Therefore we continue to consider it an outsider method." But some physicians and wellness experts are convinced of its usefulness as a supplementary therapy. When employed correctly, it is particularly helpful in orthopaedics - in treating arthrosis, for example, said Jabs. "Pulsating magnetic fields with alternating frequencies have been shown to facilitate the growth of damaged cartilage and alleviate pain," he said. Magnetic fields are also used in psychiatry. "Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or RTMS for short, influences the activity of nerve cells," Thomas Wobrock, head physician at Goettingen University's psychiatry and psychotherapy clinic, explained. He pointed out that there were clear indications of restricted activity in the frontal cortex of a depressed person. But Wobrock warned against exaggerated hopes. The therapy, he said, was not superior

5 to treatment with drugs, although it could be considered a useful supplement. Similar reservations apply in the wellness field. "It's dangerous when the procedure is used without adequate knowledge of a person's medical history," Jabs said. Therefore, patients must be thoroughly questioned beforehand. "People with a heart pacemaker or other metal implant mustn't be treated," he added. Jabs said that difficulties also arose when the magnetic devices were too weak or the treating personnel were inadequately trained. "But the big problem in the wellness field is the frequent claim that magnetic-field therapy enhances a person's well-being," Jabs said. "To put it bluntly, that's not wellness. That's a rip-off." He said the therapy was passive and did not promote a lifestyle with balanced nutrition and sufficient exercise.
