3 FOREWORD FICCI Wellness-2010 Harsh Mariwala, Sr. VicePresident, FICCI Sandeep Sinha Director South Asia and Middle East, HealthcarePractice Frost & Sullivan Dear Readers, Although the term Wellness is of recent origin, leading a disease-free and healthy life is a dream that has been pursued from time immemorial. Traditional medicinal and health practices like Ayurveda and yoga can be traced back to ancient times. Why then is this renewed interest in leading healthy lifestyles and staying away from diseases in modern times? The multi-dimensional definition for Wellness covers seven core segments such as Allopathy, Alternative therapies, Nutrition, Rejuvenation, Fitness/Slimming, Beauty, and Counseling including 26 sub-segments. According to Frost & Sullivan, the overall Indian wellness industry is expected to grow from INR Billion in 2009 to INR Billion in The industry is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 30 percent. FICCI Wellness 2010 will address the wellness-lifestyle correlation and discuss the way forward for the Government, the wellness industry and all the stakeholders including consumers. While recognizing the immense potential of the wellness industry, FICCI has taken a lead to bring the fragmented segments and sub-segments under its umbrella and organized the first Wellness Conference in 2009, which aimed at exploring the untapped potential. The immediate result was the formation of a Committee under the Quality Council of India (QCI) for preparing guidelines for Standards of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers for Wellness Centers such as Gymnasiums, Spas, Skincare Centers, Cosmetic Care Centers, Fitness Centers and Immunization Centers among others. 4 In view of the fact that two out of every three employed people in India are under stress accounting for 50 percent of heart attacks; India ranks first in diabetes with around 30 million diabetics; and 31 percent of the total urban Indian population is either obese or overweight, hence the conference focuses on Transforming Lifestyles. We hope FICCI Wellness 2010 will bring together the various stakeholders to debate the issues and challenges that need to be overcome to make India the Wellness capital of the world.
