MIASMS and BOWEL NOSODES Two possible keys to chronic disease
HAHNEMANN GOT IT WRONG ABOUT MIASMS! Hahnemann to Drs Gross and Stapf (1827): It will take them (his other followers) 6 months to get over the shock (of miasmatic theory), and another 6 months to be able to understand it And 185 years later??
MIASMS DON T T EXIST! In modern terminology they represent a functional model of chronic disease The model defines three alterations of the basic patterns of biological behaviour on which the body depends in order to function It is these abnormal functional patterns that produce the functional upsets and pathology that are recognised as disease
THE THEORY OF MIASMS (the Psoric Theory) Hahnemann developed the theory a) To explain not the failure, but the lack of permanent success in cases b) To offer a practical way of overcoming that lack of permanent success
MIASMS ARE NOT A TALE OF FAILURE AND DESPAIR. THEY ARE A PRACTICAL WAY THROUGH MANY OF THE DIFFICULTIES THAT ARE ENCOUNTERED WHEN TREATING CHRONIC DISEASE
Many of Hahnemann s early followers thought that the only reason there were problems with chronic disease was because they didn t have enough remedies that they knew sufficient about Hahnemann never believed it was that simple
but this excuse, or so called consolation, never satisfied the founder of homeopathy- particularly because even the new additions of proven valuable remedies, increasing from year to year, have not advanced the healing of chronic diseases by one step Chronic Diseases
Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homeopathic Cure Peculiar defined as Characteristic Special Any thing exempt from ordinary jurisdiction This was emphasising the contrast between acute and chronic disease
Hahnemann s s Concept 1. Chronic disease is more than just of long standing. It is a deep-seated upset to the whole body, which shows itself in different ways at different times 2. There is an interference with the normal healing processes of the body, by influences that block the normal body responses
3. These influences can only be removed by prolonged homeopathic treatment To express those influences clinically he used the general term miasm, and the terms psora, sycosis and syphilis to describe the individual influences
Hahnemann a) uses the term miasm in different ways at different times b) expressed his concept in relation to the clinical experiences of his day. This led to the impression in some quarters that the miasms are infectious agents which produced the three diseases of Scabies, Gonorrhoea and Syphilis This idea was reinforced by Kent and others, who were influenced by the religious views of Swedenborg
Psora equates to original sin of the Judeo- Christian traditions Sycosis and Syphilis were God s judgement for promiscuity. Contracting gonorrhoea and/or syphilis were the wages of sin Black with syphilis - Kent
What Hahnemann really said As a result of the incorrect treatment (which opposes nature) of these diseases the body becomes polluted with negative influences In modern parlance:- SUPPRESSIVE TREATMENT LEADS TO THE ESTABISHMENT OF A CHRONIC DISEASE STATE
SUPPRESSION AND THE ORIGINS OF THE BASIC MIASMS Miasms can be thought of as dynamic (pathological) entities arising out of the suppression of the three normal types of physiological function that occur in the body They are perversions of those functions
Normal types of physiological function working in balance 1. Creation of new cells/tissues/ secretions for normal function, replacement, reproduction and growth = production 2. Destruction and removal of dead/damaged tissues and foreign invaders = removal 3. Control of 1 and 2, and preserving homeostasis = control
Without interference the balance of these functions in the body will fluctuate continuously around a perfectly balanced state = EASE = health Interference results in the balance not being able to return to perfection, and hence a state of imbalance becomes the new norm = DIS-EASE = illness
Sources of Interference 1 Continuous exposure to the same challenge can condition the body s reaction 2 Suppression of the body s normal response by inappropriate treatment Dis-ease implies an abnormal predominance of one basic activity (function) over the others
Early Expansions/ Confusions Count Edourard von Grauvogl ( ) From Hahnemann s ideas identified 3 dynamic body states based on biochemical state (1866) 1.Carbonitrogenoid ---- psora 2.Hydrogenoid sycosis 3. Oxygenoid syphilis Early ideas about constitutional prescribing
Nebel ( ) identified his own 3 types 1.Carbonic 2.Fluoric 3. Phosphoric These moved away from purely functional considerations- included morphology First to talk about a Tubercular miasm
FIVE OLD FRIENDS PSORA Characterised as the itch disease affecting the skin In reality much more The term Psora is derived from Greek (and Hebrew) The Latin equivalent is scabies (Scabere-to scratch)
Hahnemann claimed that psora a) is the most fundamental miasm of all, and must be present for either or both of the others to appear b) is the miasm that gives the maximum of functional upset with the minimum of pathology
The maintenance of homeostasis in the body requires a constant control of all functions The consequences of a loss of such control fulfil Hahnemann s claims for psora
THE ESSENCE OF PSORA MAY BE REGARDED AS A DEFFICIECY OF FUNCTION IN SOME WAY, OR A FAILURE OF THE OVERALL CONTROL OF FUNCTION Major outlet is via the skin Suppression drives it into the nervous and endocrine systems
Sycosis Considered by Hahnemann to be the least important of the miasms (Napoleonic wars)- probably not true today Much wider implications than just fig warts ITS ESSENCE IS AN EXCESS OF REACTION BOTH MENTAL AND PHYSICAL Outlets via UG system, membranes and skin Suppression drives it into the uro-genital system
Syphilis SYPHILIS Greek siphilos to cripple or maim The body turns inwards on itself, resulting in destruction of tissues, deformities, degeneration and depression SYPHILIS IS NATURE S SELF DESTRUCT BUTTON Outlet via ulceration Suppression drives it into the immune system
Tubercular and Cancer These two are established, consistent, clinically recognisable entities based on the actions of the three basic miasms working together in a fixed manner The fixed balance of the basic miasms is different in each case
THE NEW MIASMS The three basic miasms are defined in terms of fundamental physiological functions The new miasms are defined in relation to named disease syndromes and have the symptom picture of those diseases
These syndromes are essentially acute diseases have been produced as a result of the action of the three basic influences Sankaran s new miasms are aimed at understanding the progress and form of an illness rather than its intrinsic nature
Physiology verses Pathology Miasms as they manifest clinically produce pathological entities It is possible for all three miasmatic influences to be seen operating in every disease situation All three influences can also be seen in both the remedies and the challenges that produce disease
What are called miasmatic tendencies in remedies are physiological for the source material When a material is used as a homeopathic medicine, these tendencies act antimiasmatically
Diseases should be thought of as: Predominantly psoric, sycotic or syphilitic Remedies should be thought of as: Predominantly anti- psoric, sycotic or syphilitic
The miasmatic balance of the challenge causing a disease will influence the symptom picture in that disease In any disease situation, the anti-miasmatic balance of the curative remedy will mirror the miasmatic balance of the disease
MIASMSTIC PROGRESSION AND HERING S S LAW In chronic disease miasms have their own hierarchy and progression As a disease situation worsens the miasmatic balance will change Psora>>>> Sycosis >>>> Syphilis
As cure proceeds the miasmatic progression will reverse Syphilis>>>> Sycosis>>>> Psora This process will operate alongside Hering s law Sycotic and/or syphilitic symptoms will appear in the skin during a process of cure
As cure progresses further, psoric symptoms will appear as well Final cure is in sight when a)there are symptoms only in the skin b) Those symptoms are psoric only
WHY BOTHER WITH MISMS Hering s initial view: AT ALL? What influence can it have, whether a physician adopt or reject the psoric theory, so long as he always selects the most similar medicine possible?
BUT:- Hahnemann states:- In cases of chronic disease the successful application of the law of similars requires not only the selection of a remedy matching the acute (visible) phase but also.all the ailments and symptoms inherent in the unknown primitive malady
J H Allen:- Such knowledge (of miasms) is the difference between intelligent warfare and fighting in the dark, as what we see and hear from our patients is only about some small fragment of a deep-seated disease
Clinical uses for the miasms 1. As an aid to remedy selection for both the presenting and the underlying pictures 2. A perspective on the origins of the presenting picture and obstacles to cure 3. An understanding of the progress of a case and its management
MIASMATIC CONSIDERATIONS AND APPLICATIONS IN SOME COMMON CONDITIONS
CANCER Much pathology implies the presence of the sycotic and syphilitic miasms The less cell differentiation there is the greater the syphilitic involvement The cancer miasm will feature strongly (but not exclusively) in many approaches to the condition

2 year history of increasing oral hyperplasia Lollipop very neglected over that time due to family illness and death Wanting to eat but physically unable except for semi liquid Euthanasia time??
The miasm must be Sycosis So do we give Medorrhinum? In fact Thuja given as a left laterality in the picture Thuja in rubrics for Ailments from neglect and being rejected
And 2 years later
The only other thing that has happened is some temporary sores on the back which healed without treatment Slight pigmentation where sores were
Chronic Degenerative Myelopathy 14 year old crossbred neutered male Increasing hind quarter weakness (bilateral) and urinary incontinence over the previous 2 years
Remedies usually considered in the condition:- Conium Lathyrus Sulphonal Plumbum All these will generally help to an extent but not give a consistent result
Miasmatically:- The predominant functionally symptom is weakness = psoric The major pathology in the condition is degeneration of the nerve sheath = the syphilitic influence
Conium- psora ++ sycosis ++ syphilis + Lathyrus- psora ++ sycosis ++ syphilis +
Sulphonal- psora +++ sycosis +++ syphilis + Plumbum- psora ++ sycosis ++ syphilis ++ A psoric/syphilitic remedy is needed
So consider Syphilinum psora +++ sycosis ++ syphilis +++ Sulphuric Acid- psora ++ sycosis ++ syphilis +++
Also with the right sort of miasmatic balance: Fluoric Acid and Muric Acid Phosphorus Phytolacca Sulphur etc *Failure to address the syphilitic aspect is an obstacle to cure (vet induced)*
Tabes Dorsalis A disease of the spine characterised by degeneration of the spinal cord and sensory nerve roots causing loss of positional sense and sensation. Caused by tertiary syphilis
THE BOWEL NOSODES Neither nosodes nor for treating the bowels!
A group of 11 remedies which have as their similar source materials various groups of Non Lactose Fermenting Bacilli (NLFB). 2 mixtures in addition These bacteria are found in the lower bowels in specific circumstances
Lactose is the only sugar of animal origin Their common link their inability to ferment lactose; further differentiation of the groups is made by their various reactions to 3 other sugars:- Glucose, Saccharose and Dulcitol
The Bowel Nosodes developed out of conventional work on autogenous vaccines in the early years of the 20 th century The conventional work was based on the idea of enterotoxaemia as the underlying cause of chronic disease
Bowel flora, health and probiotics That there is a close link between health and the state of the bowel flora is beyond doubt Eubiosis The state of balance that exists in health between the body and the composition of the bowel flora
Dysbiosis An upset to the balance of the bowel flora and the state of balance between the body and the bowel flora The important consideration is the flora in the posterior bowel
The flora in the posterior bowel of all species changes to a common pattern of gram-ve anaerobic bacteria irrespective of the individual digestive physiology This convergence is a major factor in making the bowel nosodes relevant to all species
The conventional view:- A healthy bowel leads to a healthy body (Recent work at Shanghai University has implicated Enterobacter cloacae as a cause of obesity-j Int Soc for Microbial Ecology) Therefore the way to influence/improve health is to support the immune system via diet and/or pre- and pro-biotics
Probiotic: A microbial feed supplement that benefits the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance Prebiotics: Complex hydrocarbons designed to ensure ideal nutrition for probiotic bacteria
Prebiotics can be used on their own to encourage existing desirable bacteria Different clinical conditions have a different dysbiosis and hence need different probiotics for maximum effect (Faecal transplants from relatives work better than from strangers)
The homeopathic view:- A healthy bowel is the result of a healthy body The alimentary system is an integral part of the total immune function Therefore the results of immune function will be mirrored in the bowel flora
Any mucus surface in contact with the exterior will have an immune function Local illness will produce a local dysbiosis Dysbiosis in the bowels is linked to a more systemic upset
Yale 1921 This conventional work in humans involved the addition of B Acidophilus and Lactose to the diet. It showed:- 1. B Acidophilus supplants other bacteria 2. Lactose causes B Acidophilus to appear 3. A synergistic effect between the two
And The simple character of the new flora persists so long as one or other diet or preparation is continued, but reverts gradually to the normal or usual mixed type within five or six days after a return to the basal diet
This has been confirmed by later work Paterson 1936 Showed that homeopathic remedies produced changes to the bowel flora similar to those induced by diet/supplements Changes take longer to appear (10-14 days) but persist once remedy stops
IN CHRONIC DISEASE:- Probiotics provide temporary relief or control of disease by external means Bowel nosodes provide permanent cure of disease by internal means
THE CONVENTIONAL WORK (Dr Edward Bach) Achieved a fair degree of success As well as monitoring the clinical state of patients, the work required the culture and analysis of faecal samples pre, post and during courses of autogenous vaccine
The crucial observation:- Faecal counts from clinical cases often showed only low or non-existent levels of NLFB. During the course of the illness there are positive and negative phases of the production of the bacilli, and these phases are related to the state of health of the patient. Successful treatment results in a marked increase in the numbers of NLFB, which then reduce again and finally disappear
The bacterial changes appeared within days of autogenous vaccine s administration The improvement in the health of the patient was maintained in spite of the NLFB levels falling to zero
The big question Dr. Edward Bach (1928) Whether these organisms (NLFB) are the cause of, the result of, or an attempt by the body to cure, the disease?
ENTER THE HOMEOPATHS (Dr John Paterson) Was only using homeopathic remedies as treatment The observation from the conventional work was just as true when remedies were used provided the patient improved clinically
1933 The non-lactose fermenting organisms found in the bowels are the result of a vital reaction on the part of the body tissues For Paterson; Vital = dynamic It was homeopathic chronic disease
Also shown that Provided the remedies acted curatively: a)different remedies produced different groups of NLFB b) The group of NLFB produced by a remedy was consistent on every occasion
The important relationship Symptom picture /\ / \ / \ NFLB-----Correct remedy (Bowel Nosode)
Things that are equal to the same thing must be equal to each other This equal relationship between the three elements in the triangle is the reason the bowel nosodes are truly homeopathic The consistency of this relationship is also the basis for the concept of associated remedies
The Associated Remedies Lists of remedies that are known to cause the appearance of particular groups of NLFB Not the same relationship as with complementary remedies, acute and chronic remedies etc There is more of a synergistic interaction than in the standard relationships
Within the lists, the remedies can be classified in the same way as in the repertories Bold type--- leading remedy Italics strong but not absolute Plain--- weaker connection Remedies can appear in more than one list, usually at a different grading
The lists are not complete and never will be They have been built up from a) the original work with faecal swabs b) subsequent clinical experience New remedies are being added as prescribing patterns and diseases change
Within each group connections can be seen between the remedies listed i) chemical ii) miasmatic iii) functional themes Each bowel nosode has a common theme which is reflected in its associated remedies
THE BOWEL NOSODES Nosode Theme Morgan Pure ) ) Congestion Morgan Gaertner)
Proteus Suddenness Nervous involvement Gaertner Bach Malnutrition emaciation Dysentery Co Anticipatory anxiety
Faecalis Sepia (Duality-JS) Bacillus No 7 Mental & physical fatigue Mutabile Changeability
Sycotic Co Irritability Bacillus No 10 Calc Fluor ( Lack or restraint Pushing boundaries -JS) Coccal Co Septic states
There are two mixtures in clinical use: Morgan Bach- Morgan Pure + Morgan Gaertner Polybowel- all except Sycotic Co
MIASMATIC CONNECTIONS OF THE BOWEL NOSODES In the treatment of chronic disease which one meets with in practice, it is well nigh impossible to get successful results without a full knowledge of the Hahnemannian doctrine of the miasms, so that one may indeed choose the most similar remedy possible Dr John Paterson (1953)
PSORA Bacillus No 7; Dysentery Co; Gaertner Bach; Morgan Gaertner; Morgan Pure; Mutabile; Proteus SYPHILIS Bacillus No 7; Bacillus No 10; Dysentery Co; Coccal Co; Gaertner Bach; Proteus
SYCOSIS Bacillus No 7; Bacillus No 10; Coccal Co; Dysentery Co; Faecalis; Morgan Gaertner; Morgan Pure; Mutabile; Proteus; Sycotic Co
TUBERCULAR Bacillus No 7; Gaertner Bach; Morgan Pure; Mutabile; Sycotic Co CANCER Bacillus No 10; Dysentery Co; Faecalis; Gaertner Bach
USING THE BOWEL NOSODES 1. As remedies in their own right All the bowel nosodes have their own remedy pictures which can be prescribed on as with any other remedy. The theme is part of the picture Eg. Morgan Bach in Kennel cough Proteus in epilepsy
2. To clarify a disease picture A bowel nosode is given if there is no clear remedy choice in a case. The symptom picture can change to indicate a clear choice If the symptom picture is completely unclear, Polybowel can be used to clear it
3. When a correct remedy has limited or no action The block to action may be removed by the use of the appropriate bowel nosode Use the nosode associated with the chosen remedy
4. The removal of persistent symptoms or a general failure to thrive after illness Use the bowel nosode associated with the remedy used successfully in the acute stage 5.A severe reaction/sensitivity to a correct remedy
SKINS Primary/ idiopathic skin problems will involve mainly the psoric and tubercular miasms The most frequently indicated BN is Morgan Pure Most cases of Atopic Dermatitis will be helped by Tuberculinum at some stage Psora +++ Sycosis +++ Syphilis ++
It has been suggested that Tuberculinum Aviare (Avis) has a more gentle action in skin cases than other forms of the nosode Sudden acute flaring of symptoms is often seen, but not always These may be either local or generalised
VACCINOSIS Vaccinosis v Vaccine reaction Vaccinosis is a true homeopathicchronic disease Symptoms will vary in individual cases Vaccine reaction is an acute response which can be turned into vaccinosis
Vaccination introduces a sycotic influence into the body How that manifests will depend on the existing miasmatic balance in that body But: Successful treatment will always have to take account of a strong sycotic influence
DOG PRESENTED WITH GENEALISED PRURITIS Dog presented with generalised pruritis at aged 2 years 3 months Primary vaccine given at 9 and 11 weeks of age 10 days after second dose she developed a sterile mucoid vaginal discharge- no treatment, cleared in 1 week
Otitis externa at same time: left ear spreading to right Drops with AB and steroid given- cleared in 3 weeks Left front leg lameness 4 weeks later NSAID given- lameness disappeared
Abdominal scratching started 4 months later Treatment with steroids, antihistamine, Abs, desensitising vaccine and baths over next 18 months Partial control at best
Only 2 seasons First at 6 months, second at 18 months Vulva and teats increased in size after first False pregnancy+++ after second Skin cleared whilst in season
Thuja 30c b d 3 days given as initial prescription 50% improvement over next 5 weeks then complete regression Thuja 200c b d 3 days given 50% improvement over 1 week then 25% regression
Sycotic Co 30c given-sdd Then repeat Thuja 200c b d 2 days Redness in skin disappeared but pruritis still present although less Vulva reduced to normal size
Change prescription to Morgan Bach 30c b d 3 days Smell ++++ developed Marked dislike of heat appeared Sulphur 30c b d 3 days completed cure
IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY IN A DOG
7 year old neutered female Labrador No significant previous medical history Vaccinated and boosted up to the age of 4 Family of 2 parents + 2 young adult children away at college
Normal Labrador:- Greedy, friendly, calm but could be playful, home-loving Particularly attached to wife Fear of fireworks if close No fear of thunder
Fire in house from upstairs TV whilst owners out and Tess was in alone Fire spotted by neighbours and fire service called Tess rescued, not hurt but nervous+ Seemed fine when owners returned
Owners moved into temporary accommodation (flat) whilst house repaired- 7 months Wife very upset by whole affair Tess had first fit after 9 weeks- treated conventionally with only partial success Frequency of fits reduced but still severe
Fits continued after moved back home Tess seemed unsettled in new home Fits occurring every 3-4 weeks Sudden onset- no time pattern Collapse and thrashing Salivation++ No incontinence Lasted 2-3 (?) minutes
JS (me) becomes involved when moved back home Prescription of Proteus 30c SDD No fit for 7 weeks then another one Repeat SDD of Proteus but at 200c
No more fits but Tess remained unsettled and appeared more nervous Very attached to and needy of wife Prescription of Baryta Mur 200c SDD Returned completely to normal over next 2 months
