Fishery Improvement Stages and Indicators We are here

PROGRESS THUS FAR Scientific observers on Moroccan RSW trawlers to evaluate discards and interactions with ETP species Conversation started with government about need for a more robust harvest control rule Exponential improvement in communication and trust between industry and government

SUCCESSES Preliminary data on discards and ETP species suggest that the fishery is clean (sampling is ongoing) The need to improve the management plans for each zone is understood; this is complex because it is a mixed fishery The government is much more willing to communicate its activities and problems to the industry (and the outside world new INRH website)

MSC BENCHMARKING TOOL Improvements clearly visible from first pre-assessment (2010) to updated pre-assessment (this project; 2014) to FIP implementation (June 2015) Key outstanding issues: management of mixed small pelagic fishery (particularly sardinella depleted) and harvest control rule more observer data for ETP species impacts of fishery on ecosystem (maintaining all stocks at target levels) transparent decision-making

C C Preassessment May Status Actual Updated aexpected Expected Expected a 2014 l end 2015 end 2016 end 2017 l c c Stock status On Target Reference points On Target Stock rebuilding Harvest Strategy On Target Harvest control rules and tools On Target Information and monitoring On Target Assessment of stock status On Target Outcome <60 <60 < <60 On Target Management 80 <60 < <60 On Target Information < On Target Outcome <60 <60 <60 < Ahead Management <60 <60 < Ahead Information <60 < Ahead Outcome <60 <60 < Ahead Management < On Target Information <60 < Ahead Outcome On Target Management On Target Information < On Target Outcome On Target Management On Target Information On Target Legal and customary framework On Target Consultation, roles and responsibilities On Target Long term objectives On Target Incentives for sustainable fishing On Target Fishery specific objectives On Target Decision making processes On Target Compliance and enforcement < On Target Research plan On Target Management performance evaluation < On Target Principle Component PI Performance Indicator MSC BENCHMARKING TOOL Outcome Management Managed species Unmanaged species ETP species Habitats Ecosystem Governance and Policy Fishery specific management system Total number of PIs less than 60 Total number of PIs Total number of PIs equal to or greater than 80 Overall BMT Index

NEXT STEPS Continue to sample discards and ETP interactions Continue to lobby for improved harvest control rule (for all species) and explain MSC requirements Presentation from French MSC-certified sardine fishery planned for January who dealt with same issue Continue to build connections and facilitate communication Working to bring more vessel owners into the FIP
