1 Clinica Nueva Esperanza May 2014 Reports Weekly Report May 5-9, 2014 This week we saw a total of 85 patients, 35 of whom were unable to pay because of limited This week I took care of a 6 year old boy with severe diarrhea syndrome. The child had had liquid stools, vomiting and fever for three days. Unfortunately the child was in a very bad state owing to the dehydration caused by the diarrhea. The family had increased the number of evacuations because in many cases when the child has diarrhea they give them a home remedy based on a plant that in Honduras is known as Fistula Cane. This plant has a laxative effect on the body increasing the number of evacuations and worsening the health situation. The family members administer this plant because they believe that when a child has diarrhea it is because they have a dirty stomach and provoking more diarrhea helps to clean its stomach. Because of this we administered liquids and antibiotics intravenously because the evacuations were accompanied by mucus and blood. Fortunately we were able to reestablish the liquids and electrolytes and combat the infection. The child is now out of danger and in good health. This week I organized a clean-up operation and gave a talk on oral hygiene in the community of las Minitas 1 patient with seborrhea dermatitis 5 patients recalled for pap smear results and treatment 1 patient for a catheter change 1 patient with elevated uric acid 1 patient with dysentery 2 patients with gastroenteritis 1 patient with multiple traumas 2 patients with circulatory disorders 2 patients for control of anemia 3 patients for control of irritable colon problems 2 patients with infected wounds 2 Pap smears 10 patients for control of hypertension 9 patients for control of diabetes 1 patient with rheumatoid arthritis 3 patients with problems of high cholesterol and triglycerides 2 patients with post menopause syndrome 2 patients with muscle spasms 1 patient with hives 1 patient with senile cataract

This week I also attended an emergency of a 46 year old man who had a machete wound on the back of the left hand. This wound was on the same man who was cutting a branch from a tree when the machete slipped striking him on the back of the other hand. The wound was about 6 cm. long and produced a cut of various muscles and tendons on the back of the hand and an apparent fracture. The patients came from a community that is an hour from the clinic and had bled a great deal. His condition when he entered the clinic was very poor, he was almost unconscious. In the clinic we stabilized his vital signs. We cleaned and treated the wound and did hemostasia in the veins and arteries that were bleeding and sent him by ambulance to Tegucigalpa where he was admitted to the Hospital and operated on to rejoin his muscles and torn tendons. He now has a weekly appointment for physical therapy.
